FYI, food for thought:

Some other tests with aggro:

Shienaran sergeants will assist on initial combat 100% of the time (as long as they are not in Fal Dara) -- this should make the mobs around dusty more appealing to try and make a stand out without having them "spam".
was more annoyed at how long it took. that's about 4 rounds there, and yet commie is usually one of the fast assist/hit smobs. Perhaps I am too used to seeing an r8 mob that insta-assists (and then drags all the other mobs to assist much faster than usual).
Feneon wrote:

This will only occur if the mob sees you start the engagement and there is a sergeant in the commy room. Since Angainor got off the engage, you would not be assisted until a round of combat went off,
his bash going through means a full round and a half went by without that happening. With the number of bashes that he landed in a row earlier (all of them...), I was hoping that he was due for a miss. otherwise, auto-flee interupting the bash lag once I got lower.
It was calculated, but the odds were not in my favor.

Not intending to backseat, but in a scenario like that you might just want to flee. The advantage you get is that you force them to build up their fleelag and in theory yours should dissipate quicker. When you do a combat round on engaging on entrance, the sergeant should aggro and then you could flee again to make them reorganize around the mobs.

The reason I post this is because I haven't seen a lot of examples posted of this being used, but I think it should make situations like yours feel better.
There is no real point in fleeing before the mobs assist. Ang's connection is much, much better than mine, and he will walk over and smack me again before I am able to figure out which direction flee I got to make it back to Commy, putting me at a further flee-lag disadvantage. I also had some back up sitting 15 rooms away that I was expecting to join me at Commy to fight them when they hit, though that also didn't happen.

With that bleeding message shown, that put me about 2-6 hp above my auto-flee threshold (though in this case, a brave flee with my luck would likely have failed the flee and lead to the same result) -- the timing on literally everything went wrong for me there which is why I posted it.

Interesting to know about the engage mechanics though, is it correct to assume that if I just melee'd instead of rolling the counter-bash, the attack round would have gotten the mobs to assist?

Did be my last response. Not that I should justify it. But this is why our playerbase is hovering around 5-10 and maybe a bit more around winter. He blinded me gap, told em was going to head in and afk. Got about 3 fireballs off before I realized wow the guy will kill me afk. So decided to bash a few 🤷‍♂️ Is what it is, just nothing surprises me with dis playerbase. Was mostly fun being back. I’ll complete my master quest and take another extended break. Continue to justify the fun my friends ;)

I get your point and have no practical experience playing with high latency, but it sounds terrible. Here's an example of how that assist mechanic is meant to work without explaining it.

So in theory, if you hit first, the smob should get on your opponent because once sergeant assists, others may assist in the fray. Or they join the fray the next round which advances the combat because mobs will enter combat if unengaged if an alley is in combat.

e.g.

Sort of,
Can you confirm that those sergeants are supposed to assist after a combat round of an ally engaged, or if it specifically needs a combat round with a melee attack to trigger it?

I was in combat for over 3 rounds, and they didn't assist until the aggro pulse and the smob engaged. Being sat by a bash makes things iffy, as certain mechanics count you as unengaged and others count you as engaged -- the bash making me sitting and unengaged for this purpose, but I feel that the combat round while the bash timers were rolling should have counted for the friendly assist check if it works as you noted.
