Adding to our Playerbase - Campaign
Re: Adding to our Playerbase - Campaign
As a relatively new player (just over a year) I thought I'd share my experience. I started reading WoT about 2 years ago (still not done). I've usually enjoyed doing things text only, and have played some of the games Reyne mentioned before like Dwarf Fortress. I don't remember what made me decide to try a mud. I had tried one probably 10 years ago and didn't last 10 minutes. It was probably because I was so hooked on the books and wanted to play a WoT game.
If I hadn't found Adaels maps right off the bat I don't think I would have stayed. I think I even researched that before I ever logged on. I had a character with horrible stats (because I didn't know they didn't change after level 3) and was around level 10 struggling to kill stags. I was getting a bit discouraged.
Fortunately someone saw me and asked I I was new and got me sorted out. He found Rajis on the forum and found me a good axe. Then others (primarily Sooshe, Woden, and Tandreal) that gave me their time to help me xp. I probably also would have left if it wasn't for them. They were glad to see me and never made it seem like I was a bother. There were also some wisdoms that helped me out getting my gear after early deaths.
That eventually got me to level 30 and I started looking at clans. As this was my first mud and hadn't dealt with RP yet, most of the clans were intimidating. The defenders seemed like the easiest to join and had a recent ToL post for recruitment. So I met up with Hyzael and Yasmin and enlisted to defend the Stone.
Shortly after that was the first round of wars. I ended up getting in a fight against one of the people that had helped me so much during my first weeks. It sort of turned me off a little bit because I didn't know what I was doing in war. After the war I started playing again and was glad to get to know my clan. My favorite moments in the game have been doing things with my clan members, especially other people's master quests etc. Eventually being the most active defender got me a spot on council and that has been quite a learning experience itself.
As for pk, I'm still awful at it. Mostly because I haven't put in the time to learn zones. My time is so limited now that I also don't feel like spending the small amount of time I have learning pk. (My wife turns into a trolloc if I play too much...)
Smobbing is better for me. Although I'm naturally an introvert, so I don't join many groups if it's not with my clan. And I usually don't have time to do IoMM or Jafar.
Hopefully my experience can help in some way. The main point I take from it is that what has kept me here is the players, especially my clan and those that reached out to me when I was starting. I think it is us the players that make the game a good experience or a bad one.

Re: Adding to our Playerbase - Campaign
Thanks for sharing Rajis, think that is how a lot of us found the mud and first started. At least my experience is almost a mirror of yours, I joined the Companions however, important difference! :p
I think for a lot of people(or maybe the more competitive minded) what gets us hooked is the character progression and no doubt the magic wears off once you reach an end goal, be it fade, rank 7/8, Sedai, WB whatever it is you've set out to do. The great thing about WoTmud is that there is a lot of different characters and clans you can play. I've been here around 14-16 years, can't really recall, and I've still to play certain characters. So there's still new things to explore or classes to challenge yourself with. Gotten bored on your fade, go play a human channeler if you've never tried. Gotten bored on your human characters, try a trolloc. Never played a rogu...nevermind go play a basher
But I think Razhak's post is somewhat spot on. Would be nice to have more options than just DL/fade on DS and Warder/Sedai on LS as the "tough" clans to join. I really liked his post way back when he listed a bunch of different remort classes that suited most people's playstyles. Greyman for the people who like to stab, some kind of big trolloc for the Ghar. Having more options and different classes to work towards to will probably keep those of us around who enjoy trying a bit of everything. And having them as "remort" would mean anyone can become one. Granted I imagine this would be a huge project and without a dedicated coder likely not to happen - was a shame when the whole SS ogier/forrester thing fell through, I remember it was super buggy, but was still pretty cool to see something new happen. Hell it could even just be Gaidin, grandfather the people in who were clanned before 2010 or something and move the rest of the Gaidin to Valon Guard or if they would rather apply somewhere else, have that be a possibility.
Anyway I think for us oldbies we'd probably like to see something new and shiny, new remort options or whatever and that'll probably ensure we stay around at least for another couple years.
While the mud has become a lot easier to navigate and a lot more newbie friendly, I imagine there is still some way to go, so would be great to hear from other newer folks what they found difficult when they started and why they stuck around and then maybe focus on trying to fix or enhance that. Would imagine after the show airs that a lot more people will try the books and eventually end up googling WoT game and stumble upon this place.

Re: Adding to our Playerbase - Campaign
Backtracking because I like to dung on Orino because he's a dickhead,
Guy spent a whole week talking about the old boiz club and wouldn't even pk with me on LS because he was trying to accuse me of some fuckery between me on Ryzom and Razhak during pk? Every. God. Damn. Time. I. Logged. On. You build your own bed and reputation trying to accuse me (and other people) of specifically wanting to screw YOU during pk or whatever the hell it is you're doing. Try being less of a selfish and conceited dick who thinks the world is against him and just play the god damn game.
Now that that's over, as for playing the game. I only log on to help people and play with friends. I've pretty much completed my plethora of what seemed as unachievable goals when I was a newbie. Mastering, Remorting, Chosen, Gaidin, etc. It's been a wild ride, and the pk experience is the most enjoyable aspect of this game to me. Still have a few goals left, like rank 8 and WB and even some RP related goals like Aes Sedai or something.
The problem I think is that you need to have something exciting and engaging to keep people going like Saif said. Pk is one of those things for some people, or joining certain clans for others, and some other things. I've really enjoyed the last year with the current staff and how much they've done to keep people engaged on holidays and the competitions. (Christmas 2x qps anyone???)
Luckily now we have these prerolled options when it comes to getting into the game. Also the exp slog has been massively reduced because of the trainers across the world. And the changes for hunters and warriors to get coin on DS. Really, I've enjoyed the last year of changes and it's what has made me excited to log on for recently. Thanks friend Imms, except Vampa. Vampa is firetrucking awful.

Ideally I would like to see remorts taken out of their places of seclusion, and thrust back into the fray.Saif wrote: ↑Fri Nov 01, 2019 10:17 pmBut I think Razhak's post is somewhat spot on. Base of our RP surroundings would become the clans again, be it on LS or DS. As it is, remorts are taken out of their own clans, and thrust out as remorts. On DS this leads to trollocs clans constantly losing their most experienced players to remorting. Rank 8 has made this a little less acute, but still it goes on. I would like fades to stay in their own clans, retain their clanmaster status and can still work towards the good of the clan. Only if they are being called forward to join the Chosen, they would leave their clans.
There are alot of caveats there, at the moment things like fade range and speed of the fade timer are linked to clanrank, and now thats being handled by rank in the myrddraal clan. If fades stay in their clans, they would suddenly get rank 7 range and timers (not good..). But I cannot imagine this cannot be fixed.
Dreadlords would be another thing, I think they would still be in their own clan, instead of staying in Trolloc clans, from a RP point of view. But on the other hand, there are alot of bookish examples of dreadlords (trolloc wars) and forsaken leading fists of trollocs, so keeping them in their own clans would still also be fine by me personally. Same would apply for them if they would be called up for the Chosen.
For LS I would like to see all bonussed clans other then the Wolfbrothers to go. However, I would think that LS bonused characters would become like DS remorts: with set rules and regulations how to achieve remorting, and then depending on the sort of remort you get cast out of your clan or be retained.
The classes for LS I once wrote down were (gonna lump LS and SS together now that SS has been joined to LS):
Deathwatch Ogier: remort option only for seanchan deathwatch clanneds, basically a human trolloc-statted character with max stats akin to a trolloc master.
Seanchan Blademaster: seanchan with blademaster unique skills (to be decided).
Ogier: remort option only for forresters, basically a human trolloc-statted character with max stats akin to a trolloc master.
Human blademaster: human with blademaster unique skills (to be decided).
Warder: human with current warder bonusses.
Wolfbrother: human with current WB bonusses.
For the Seanchan DW Ogier, the Ogier options, the remorts would offcourse retain their clanned status in their feeder clans. I would imagine that any seanchan or human clanned (only optional for clanneds imho) would be able to become a remorted blademaster (btw only one remort allowed, so no ogier warder blademaster hybrid monstrosities) would retain their clanned status as wel.
For the warder and wolfbrother remorts they would be cast out and inducted into their own clans (Warder and Wolfbrother). Now I hear people ask: but how about warder pairs? My plan would be for all warder remorts to have warder bonusses, regardless of being "bonded". The only thing that would change with the bond would be the warder rescue bonus. Lose the hps drain, and in return drop the sps loss on bonding. This would make things alot more concise when dealing with AS pairs and rules/regulation thereabouts.
Wolfbrothers stay the way they are now, no changes needed there.
For DS I used to have the following remort options:
Fade: as now
Dreadlord: as now
Grey man: option only available for kobal, not sure how to code them, but to be decided.
Behemoth: a bigger, badder trolloc (albeit, this has somewhat been adressed to in trolloc rank 8 bonusses).
Draghkar: a little bit weaker character, but with added abilities of being able to fly and use some sort of weave like abilities (deafen, silence, etc)
Offcourse this all would require alot of coding, and alot of rethinking current processes. It would require alot of people to rethink how they would want to play their characters. Also it would require alot of people (players and imms alike) to reset their parameters mentally about whats important. It would be a major push forward for the mud, a little bit like building Wotmud 5.0 instead of the current Wotmud 4.45 version we are on.
It would however put more power to players themselves on how to achieve and with whom to do it. It takes away the bottleneck that certain clans are to bonusses. It also takes away alot of red tape and now-neccesary imm controll.
Re: Adding to our Playerbase - Campaign
They did try leaving remorts in their respective clans, the issues was that the class was tied to rank. So every fade would have a stupid short fade timer and insane range, ie your bonuses. Imagine for it to work, they'd have to revamp the whole thing, tying the class bonuses to the Chosen clan and any rank above 7. Ie a rank 8 dha'vol Fade would have the same fade timer as a rank 5/6 chosen - I forget the qps needed for different ranks, rank 8 is 3k so thats same as r6 remort? Anyway yeah I always liked those ideas of making more different remorts.
Edit: Probably easier to just tie the bonuses to QPs and using the current Fade/DL table as the marks for increased prac/range/timer.

Re: Adding to our Playerbase - Campaign
Cosmo: Thanks for your kind words. I never considered myself good at pk. I did use a mob a lot before changes. And flee a lot as I am usually pking without support of any kind.
I think there should be more policing of language and harassment. I found not checking discord helps, but my side is never truly heard or understood due to the loud few that are very unkind.
I’ll never recommend someone from rl due to language and harassment that takes place. But I do feel the best way to grow here is personal invitation. I like the idea of a flyer in a library book. It is too difficult to learn this game without some sort of help.

Try not harassing other players as well. Pot calling the kettle black!
Re: Adding to our Playerbase - Campaign
My middle school students behave better than this. Seriously. This board could develop some standards of behavior. That may help draw in and keep new players.

I completely understand where Orino is coming from too because I've seen it from you assholes. Orino is far less whingey than you make him out and you are all complete dicks to him because you enjoy it.
You guys are chortlesnorfling assholes
Stop being dicks maybe?
Maybe try not being a liar, a cheater, and the biggest whiner on here if we want to spitball the truth!
Re: Adding to our Playerbase - Campaign
Yea well, I have no defense. I'm going to treat him like dung. He can sit here and play the victim card all he wants, and then use it to hide behind the hypocrisy in every single cry and moan he makes. He treats other players like garbage, he acts like garbage, and then he will blame every single thing on you and spread whatever narrative fits his story about other players with no remorse. Comical that he sits here and cries about being bullied when he does everything he can to think of a way to spin his little story to make whoever he targets look like the scum of the earth and get cheered on from the sidelines for it. There's a reason he didn't get a transfer into Saldaean Cavalry with full quest points. He's a liar, he's a cheater, he's a whiner, and biggest of all, he's a bully. So yes, i'm going to be loud about it and call out his bullshit because after he sat there for a god damn week and targeted me with his bs, I'm sick of him and i'm going to treat him the way he wants to treat anyone else he dislikes.
Re: Adding to our Playerbase - Campaign
I love everyone.
I have a new player that just joined this game, and it was really cool seeing another somewhat new player, Toma, try and help her. It was kinda cute cuz they were kinda figuring out things together. Then more experienced players like Piste, Shiva, and Livendros came along and interacted as well. Just that little bit helped I think strengthen them overall.
I like that. And want to see more of it.
