The one and only time I ever played - it wasn’t on forums here - I ruined the game in one round because I didn’t really get it. Will I be able to figure it out by following everyone’s posts and maybe I’ll try to play next game?

You should totally just join in. If there's anything you don't understand while the game is going on you can send me a PM and I'll explain, but the basic rules are really simple and I think you'll both do fine. Best way to learn mafia is to jump in and muddle your way through, a lot of stuff happens that you can't see just from reading the public game thread.
