We all share a common interest here

Post by daal » Wed Oct 11, 2017 2:10 am

So how about we all take a moment to do a little self reflection to determine how each of us can make this a more welcoming community for all players, both old and new.

Thanks in advance,
Everyone's pal Daal

Treat each other with a little bit of respect, we are all people behind the *names*.

If the game makes you angry or upset, log out and go and find something else to do rather than taking out your angst and dissatisfaction on your wotmud peers.

Over the years I've developed a thicker skin. Don't take others angst personally. Be a realist and take this game as it is.

“Got 20 crowns to my name, in this game of Mud, and the only players I know are darkfriends and hired thugs!” -anonymous WoTmud rapper.

I find for me that giving back to the community has been really rewarding. Immortals do a lot: from keeping the lights on to fixing the slightest of typos. But you don’t have to apply for that to help contribute and be a part of the community. WoTmud has a long tradition of players helping players: scripting, maps, starting smob groups, and all the way down to running out meat and lanterns to a haggard, lost newbie.

We all have unique experiences and skill sets that can be a valuable gift to others that choose to spend their time here.

Help yourself by helping someone else today.

This thread literally just got locked when Masaj and I refused to be nice.

We’ll do it again if you make us

I find it less than funny that some of the 'ooh be nice to everyone' about their PK skills folk in that 'other' thread are those same offenders that go in for the afk and easy kills and out and out ruin people's day.

I've been back for a few months- mainly because I have a little bit of time and access, with a 6-week old baby, meaning that I can do some stuff when she's sleeping, as I am running my own business, but then I have to drop everything immediately when she is not.

I've PK ripped five or six times, where it hasn't phased me at all, because i'm crap at PK, but trying to learn. But then I've also had a string of AFK rips, or ones where I'm clearly not looking for - or equipped for PK, which have completely fubarred my day.

Read through most of the other thread. It seems to me there are two separate issues:

1. Resolving underlying issues to get players to like each other more
2. Being civil

#2 can be independent of #1. A big part of the problem in the real world today is a lack of being civil to people that you don't like and that you disagree with. Regardless of what people pk like, you should always strive to be polite. And believe it or not, if you're polite with constructive criticism, the likelihood of changing someone's behavior is astronomically higher than if you're rude.

#1 is a great goal we should all work towards, but it doesn't mean you can't do #2 in parallel. #2 is a lot easier, just takes some self control.

Yeah, don't make us do it.

You're right, of course -- and I'd agree in any instance where I thought incivility actually in the game was a massive issue for most people, but then again, I say that without really knowing how sensitive people are. I don't think people are just randomly rude to each other. Seems like most people just straight up ignore each other these days (which can be interpreted as uncivil, but since we're talking very baseline civility here, let's say that's not uncivil) or concentrate their abuse on Rig, which, I think we all agree, is valid. I think the level of civility and incivility the vast majority of people experience is pretty much on par with average and not worthy of this "we all really need to be nice to each other, trust falls, yay" crap.

I don't really see anything but the same exact people, who have major underlying issues that's made them difficult to like for years, complaining about how uncivil people are to them - then the same people (who nobody gives enough of a firetruck about to really even be uncivil to on a regular basis) pile on because they never got given their WarderBrotherFadeSedai and they've conflated that with the lack of basic civility or meanness. So, while you're right that #2 can be independent of #1, I think the "can" has been expended in most of the relevant cases.

Back when numbers where high I believe these people were mostly drowned out and people got on and enjoyed themselves regardless. Now that numbers are lower, we all mostly know each other, and these people stick out like sore thumbs, and each treats them in their own way. Unfortunately sometimes these people can't look in the mirror and realize what they are.
