Outdated Information

Circle of Ravens
Somewhere in the heavens, the Circle of Ravens is the rebirthing point of
the honored dead. From here those points held by the Imperial Armies may be
reached. A fountain remains placid and still allowing for peace and rest.
New characters should LOOK NAMES, TELL GUARDIAN KIT and LOOK NOTICE. To
find exit locations you should LOOK EXITS. It is strongly recommended that
new players look at our website at wotmud.org, before starting out, for the
rules, maps, and more.

Welcome to WoTmud IV, the Wheel of Time MUD, the largest free Wheel of
Time-based online RPG. With more than 6,000 players from 80+ different
countries, we hope that you will enjoy yourself in our corner of the Internet.

Please have a look at our website at http://wotmud.org/ before starting out in
this game. There are a number of features unique to WoTmud that should be taken
account of prior to character creation, and the website is a good place to
discover those. Type "Tell guardian kit" (followed by return) to obtain some
starting equipment, and read the news boards around the cities to obtain the
latest information about the game.

In order for your equipment to be saved, you must rent at an inn, which will
cost you some coin depending on the quality and quantity of what you've got.

Please also report any problems and comments you may have either on the boards
or to [email protected]/. If you enjoy playing the game, and wish to help us
promote it, please put up a link to our site on the WWW!

Link should point to the forums instead of the website since webpage is outdated. A link to the rules in announcement post might be best. The email address for problems and comments is outdated as well yes? News boards around the game are no longer used for releasing the latest information.
look names

NAMES
-----

Names on this mud should be appropriate to Robert Jordan's timeline. Names
are to be a first name only as you can choose a last name or a title at
level 20. Also names should only have the first letter capitalized. Names
are to be actual names, not ideas, concepts, verbs, adjectives or anything
that could be confused with mobiles or code in the game. Some examples of
good names are Erengol, Arim, Galdor and Warlan. Some bad examples are Atom,
DarkAngel, WolfBrother, You, BOBBY, Flamewielder, Justicebringer, Sword,
Did, Spock & Bigass.

Characters on the mud are also not allowed to use names from the book or
any close deviation of the name. So MatrimCauthon or Matt or Perryn is not
allowed. If you are in violation of any of these guidelines, you should
quit now and create a character with a proper name. If you keep an inproper
name, the Mud Staff will remove you from the game. So doing this simple
procedure now will save you some time and hassle.

If you are having trouble thinking up an acceptable name then just go on
the web to http://wotmud.org/names where the custom-made 'Wheel of Time

* Press <Return> to continue, q to quit *>

names maker' will make 100 random wot-type names for you.

Thanks for helping us keep to a high standard. Please enjoy playing the
Wheel of Time MUD!
The name generator does not work, brings up Arglebargle, glop-glyf!?! page. That link could (should?) be removed until it is fixed (if ever).

Circle of Darkness
Deep beneath the world, the circle of darkness is the accursed ground of
the friends of the dark. From here, a few major locations can be reached,
as shown by a blood-colored sign. A permanently-flowing well in the center
of the circle provides a soothing background to ponder mortal matters.
-
For complete beginners, please type HELP NEWBIE.
For new characters, please type LOOK NAMES.
Newcomers to this mud should LOOK NOTICE.
New characters should TELL GUARDIAN KIT.

If you're looking for something to do after dying, LOOK SLAIN.
[ obvious exits: N E S W U D ]
A revolting well bubbles with the blood of the sacrificed.
The News Board is mounted on the wall here.

There is a dash on the 5th line of the room description, used as a line break. Not standard practice.

Look notice and Look names same as CoR above.

There is no sign for the command Look Sign to see the exits from CoD (sign is there just no notification of it)

Help newbie is a help file, and geared towards LS and starting out in the Circle of Light, maybe it shouldn't be posted in only the CoD? or could be posted in all three circles.

Look slain is an old outdated note from Nass from around 2000.
At the time of writing (end 2000) WoTmud is the largest Wheel of Time
themed online-only RPG (MUD), with > 6,000 players from > 85 countries. It
has grown tremendously in the last 12 months, which has added a lot of
atmosphere to the game and made it all-round much more enjoyable, and
rewarding for the Immortals. It is inspiring to see the MUD grow the way
that it has recently, and it keeps us all going, creating one of the best
MUDs out there. However, bear in mind that the MUD is entirely run on a
volunteer basis, from the bills to the coding, questing, zones and website,
and for the MUD to keep growing this way we'd appreciate your taking these
few minutes to help spread the word on the WWW.

There are many ways to spread the word around, from an objective review at
the MUD connector (http://mudconnector.com) to popping off a polite email
to webmasters of busy mud, game, wheel of time, fantasy or entertainment-
related webmasters/website editors, and it takes all of 2 minutes. Please
use the text on our homepage at http://wotmud.org/, and if they request a
reciprocal link send them my way ([email protected]).

Thanks,
Nass

The standardization of all three circles with the similar formats and mobol could help newer players adjust to the game easier when trying out new sides, also it catches beginners regardless of what side they decide to try first and gives the opportunity to convey the necessary information they need to succeed at starting out. Standardization also gives the benefit of easy updating in the future for immortals when information changes or new material is added.

Just some added thoughts on the outdated info in the circles.

While we're posting outdated information:

The boundaries of Tar Valon posted on the east gate and southwest(?) gate of the city need to be modified to match the boundary stones in game.

Bridge Across the Erinin
The bridge arches one hundred feet above the surface of the River Erinin.
It is made of a white stone that looks as slick as glass, yet feels as hard
as tempered steel. The lacy forms of the railings and supports make the
bridge look like it would collapse under its own weight, let alone the
weight of riders and wagons. To the west is the Daghain Gate to the famed
city of Tar Valon. A large sign lists the local laws and customs.
[ obvious exits: N E S W ]
There are some tracks of a ridden mount leaving west.
There are some tracks of a ridden mount leaving east.
An iron lantern hangs from the wall above the gate.
A gray palfrey prances skittishly nearby, being ridden by you.

The Laws of Tar Valon:

Borders of Tar Valon:
The Borders of Tar Valon are:
Towards Caemlyn: The Bend in the Road 1w of the Andor patrol.
Towards Cairhien: The most southeasterly section of road posted as The "Tar Valon to Cairhien Road".
Towards Fal Dara: At the road posted as "A Curving of the Road" south of the Borderguard Fort.
To the West: The Western border of the Sallow Woods including the waygate area.

Laws of Tar Valon
1. There will be no unauthorized attacks on visitors and citizens of Tar Valon, either in the city or within the lands it holds. Violations may lead to banishment or warranting depending on circumstances.

2. The use of the One Power as a weapon against a human anywhere except in self-defense or legitimately serving a warrant is a warrantable offense

3. All male channelers will be warranted on discovery.

4. The use of commonly known (clan) equipment from shadowspawn or Seanchan is not allowed. It must be removed while within the confines of Tar Valon city and lands. Refusal to remove said equipment at the request or order of a Tar Valon Citizen (Aes Sedai, Gaidin, or Valon Guard) is cause for banishment and can lead to warranting.

5. All items of the One Power, angreal, ter'angreal, and sa'angreal, are rightfully the property of the Tower and must be turned over to an Aes Sedai at their request. Refusal may lead to banishment or warranting. Lightsticks are an exception.

6. Aiding and abetting any male channeler or other person warranted by Tar Valon may earn a warrant.

7. Any unprovoked attack on a citizen of Tar Valon (Tower, Gaidin, or Valon Guard) in any land is a warrantable offense unless LEGITIMATELY serving a warrant.

8. When a warranted person requests a pardon they must either submit themselves or perform a task to prove their contrition for their offense. The number of submissions or alternate quest depends upon the severity and number of offenses.

9. Hiding in Tar Valon (use of the command hide) is forbidden and may lead to banishment.

10. Visitors to the Tower must remain on the ground floor unless with a Tower escort and at all times must remain out of the library, classroom, Hall of Sitters, Kitchen, Pantry, and basement. Anyone may visit Coulin. Only Tower may visit Sheriam Sedai.

12. Using tricks to mimic channeling Saidin (emotes) may earn a warrant just as actually using Saidin would.

13. Known Darkfriends are considered the same as other shadowspawn as far is in regard to Tar Valon laws.

14. Stealing from any individual is forbidden in Tar Valon, and may be punished by banishment or warranting.

Passed by the Hall of Sitters on 8/12/2008.
Revised by the Hall of Sitters on 13th February 2010.

Re: the borders, that's really up to the Hall to change - I'm not going to retroactively adjust the document they voted on back then.

Plus just because they claim it, doesn't mean they own it.

Re: the other stuff... I don't even know where to begin. There is useful info on the website, so I don't see why it should refer to forums. Re: the email, that has always been the relevant email and we simply don't have a replacement. At best I can see changing the reference to the name generator to a general tip "use an online name generator", but given how dramatic editing these things are, and the associated risk of losing other vital info, I'm more inclined to just let it sit.

Thanks for the reply Elysia.

Looking back I realize I didn't quite take the time and articulate my open post as well as I would have liked, and you are absolutely correct about the website. I also think that it is great that the email is still active and accessible, I always have contacted staff in game or through whatever the current forums have been over the years so that is why I was wondering about that. The main issue I was trying to bring up was just for newer people, people that need to read that stuff and are trying to learn. It just seems confusing since I know the in-game boards and in-game mail are not active and all information is distributed through the forums, and even Facebook for quite a few years. I can understand not wanting to lose information, didn't realize these things were difficult.

Right on, thanks again for everything.

Tried to make the name generator change, but I wasn't kidding on the "editing these things is dramatic". Ended up making no changes.
