Computer, client and scripts

Post by Shzrei » Mon Mar 13, 2017 5:25 am

Hey all;
Is there anyone who is very good at putting computers together, and scripting?
I've been meaning to buy a new computer for about 3 years now and just can't decide on one - so am looking to get one built with good keyboard, mouse, and whatever else might be needed for playing.
On the same note I've wavered back and forth between yTin, Mudlet and Zmud and can't seem to really decide on any one.
I'd prefer to use mudlet - but am worried that it may be creating some weird lag in the system and be slightly slower than other clients.
In respect to computers, suggesting an off the shelf model would also be fine, so long as its a specific model. i.e. go buy this at this link here.

Wondering if anyone is willing to, either as a favour or for a commission,
Design/spec a computer (for purchase/set up in Australia).
Design/set up a client for installing on that - to install useful scripts
Write a damned tick timer script for Mudlet that works!

Also wondering if there is anything behind the scenes that can be accounted for in scripts to adjust to lag instantly - i.e. at one point I created a timer for bashes and from my starting a bash the times sometimes varied by about 200ms - as there were pulses spinning in the timer the whole time I'm wondering if its possible to create a timer that accounts for changes in these (i.e. if one of the pulses is 50ms late than it should be the timer automatically extends by that much).

I'd really like to get back into playing although it seems I never have time!

*hugs* hopeful!

Do you already have a monitor? Have you thought of getting a laptop? You could still plug a keyboard and mouse into the laptop and your external monitor. And this way you get the benefit of mudding in bed or outside or on a plane if you feel like it.

If you like the laptop idea go into JB hi-fi and have a look around. Would need to know what monitor you have to check for ports etc. But happy to help you pick one.

Otherwise for a desktop this Aussie site is very popular and you will get a better quality PC then hn or JB etc.

However it is usually always cheaper to pick parts yourself. Umart is the best and cheapest I have found. Just let me know a budget and I am happy to put together a parts list. And umart can build it for you for a small fee.

What this guy said, but without being a Guest ^^^.

Have built many systems using Umart and PCCG.

PM me a Budget and we can start from there.

Ah I don't have anything at the moment.Monitor, Keyboard etc. I do have my work laptops (an old Toshiba which runs mudlet and the keys are a little sticky, and a newer (3yrs old?) ultrabook that would be fine - if I could freaking install any programs on it. I don't have the admin password and management have been keeping it secret.

I should probably also get a desk or something so I STOP pking in bed.

Budget - ideally under $1000. If I extended to something I could actually play games on (I haven't played any in years but enjoy them) could maybe extend this to $1600.00

If there is something that I'd be dumb not to get I can get something more expensive but I've got a 15k debt atm I want to run down and so prefer to keep things cheap.

That's an idea - how hard is it pking off a TV screen? I could probably set up the laptop to connect to a TV screen in the lounge room with a portable desk/wireless keyboard.. could be a cheap option.

.. err sorry about the lack of PM *hugs*

I've never tried this on a work laptop but it should be possible to use linux on a USB to mud using mudlet. Worth investigating if you already have a decent laptop. This should boot into linux instead of windows when you start up.

Depending on what games you want to play I would recommend just getting a PS4. You can pick one up for $400 and it has some really great exclusives like the new Horizon Zero Dawn.

YMMV but I would go option 1 or 3 then 2.

Cost comparison:
Option 1:
- puppy linux and work laptop - free
- table $150
- chair $100
- Ps4 $400
- 3 games $200
Total $850

Option 2:
- Gaming Pc - $1300
- Monitor - $200
- Keyboard and mouse - $100
- desk $250
- chair $100
- 3 games $200
Total $2150

Option 3 if puppy doesnt work:
- Ultrabook $600
- table $150
- chair $100
- Ps4 $400
- 3 games $200
Total $1450

I should probably check what consoles my housemate set up with my tv - I kinda zoned out while he was going on but there is probably a PS4 there already, as well as his wii and xbox

Kinda liking this option with a portable keyboard - though it'd likely frustrate him if he was trying to watch movies :p

Are you going to use it for other things then mudding? If you are not, then there is No need for you to spend 1000+ on a mere laptop or computer

I have some experience hooking my laptop up to a tv. If using a HDMI cable, I have a slight delay from the computer to the output of the tv. This can be bypassed if you have a tv with a data monitor port i think. although you might have to hook up the sound separate, and that might come with its own issues of sync etc. Anyway, just be aware that if you plan to hook your laptop up to a tv you might suffer slight lag just from that.

Sadly, I haven't managed to get Mudlet to compile on a Raspberry Pi (I code the former and have a couple of the latter) and that would otherwise be a REALLY cheap way to get on-line and Mudding!

One issue is that the Mudlet 3D mapper uses OpenGL (old <= 2.0 direct code which is obsoleted in latter OpenGL versions) but the RPi can offer only OpenGLES and that doesn't support the direct code either - someone (me?) is going to have to learn a lot more about 3D graphics... :(

OTOH TinTin++ should compile/work loverly on that sort of hardware so, if you have a decent TV with an HDMI input and can work with a CLI client, you could get Mudding for under, say, £50 or equivalent... :D

Disclosure: I've had my hand in the source code of both of these MUD Clients and I am not impartial on the subject. :geek:
