NIGHT FOUR ENDS


After a long, silent night, the town of Alkindar reawakens to its happy Altaran existence. Elena and Raffaela, childhood friends and lovers, emerge from their room in The Silken Trim to satisfy the rumblings of unfed stomachs. The weather outside is cool, and they take a morning stroll after breakfast through the still-quiet streets of the town, pushing aside the alluring smell of pastry coming from the building opposite the Trim. Their walk takes them past Four Fingers, to Ferrante's Finery, where they buy a new dress each from the elegant Mr. Ferrante.

When they return to the square, thinking that they might after all relent and venture into the pastry shop, they find a crowd gathered in distress. Confused shouts fill the air, and already a group of refugees have been rounded up and beaten for the crimes that only such amoral vagabonds could have committed. The lovers sigh and disappear back into their upstairs lodging, ignoring the passerine trapped in the common room. Everything beyond their bodies and the closed bedroom door is promptly forgotten. Another happy day in Alkindar.

With a confident step, Adirne approaches "The Alkindar" inn. Producing from her pouch a small piece of paper that she shows to madame M., she waits patiently to be taken inside.

Madame M. glances momentarily over the invitation and quirks a smile. 'Please, follow me, lady Adirne. It's a fine day for a party, don't you think?'

[Adirne]

Adirne follows, glancing here and there, curious to see who this lady Alaesha is. 'Indeed, we'd been fortunate to have been avoided by the rains that are so common in Shaldine. And then even when the storm did come, still some good has come out of it.' Adirne smirks knowingly.

Font and Trousp lock up the library and go home. With no books stolen or defaced, the only disruption in their day comes when Carmela is startled for a moment on the way home. As they pass the Maedor residence, an impossibly cute creature bursts out from inside and scurries across the street like an otter. Another happy day in Alkindar.

Weira wanders the streets of Alkindar, searching desperately and aimlessly for something, or someone. The night takes her into itself, and as the sun breaks the horizon several hours later, Weira is nowhere to be found. The town awakens slowly and begins readying itself for another happy day of serving pies, stacking shelves, and selling knives.


Weir the Seanchan da'covale has vanished.
