Quarterly Quest Mobs (And a contest)

Post by Soul » Thu May 21, 2026 12:38 pm

Beginning today, a new quest mob has officially been added to the game. His name is the Smarmy Man. Why smarmy? Because it is a good word and it does not get used nearly enough.

He has been stationed northeast of Caemlyn's west gate. Joncask has also been updated. Visit either mob and you will be prompted as normal.

Going forward, the quests for both mobs will rotate every quarter. I have already written enough content for the next year and, with time, hopefully enough for two years and beyond. The goal is to create a system where players can continue advancing their characters through multiple paths and playstyles.

For this quarter alone, there are 100 quest points available between both mobs. Over the course of a full year, that means a minimum of 400 quest points will be available. I would like to push that to 500 whenever possible, and potentially even beyond that.

These quests are not designed to be easy. Some will be difficult to discover at first, and many will require teamwork. Certain items will only come from enemies that cannot realistically be handled alone. Other objectives may simply require exploration and attention to detail. In some places you may encounter mobs you have never seen before that respond to specific prompts and point you toward the next step. But remember, nothing comes freely. How you approach these challenges is entirely up to you.

For those unfamiliar with the quarterly schedule:

Q1: January 1 through March 31
Q2: April 1 through June 30
Q3: July 1 through September 30
Q4: October 1 through December 31

I am not going to promise that every new set of quests will arrive exactly on those dates. I will promise that we will do our best to keep things moving consistently.

The goal posts are moving, folks.

My philosophy, and one I believe is shared by the rest of the staff, is that the game should always continue moving forward into new territory. The game has existed for more than thirty years and many players have already achieved the goals that once seemed impossible. It is time to shift things forward again. Maybe that means Rank 8. Maybe it means something beyond Rank 8. Systems like this help make those possibilities real.

It is time to start looking ahead. These are exciting times.

That said, new systems can still be ruined if they are abused. A few bad actors can undermine things for everyone else. If we find players exploiting mechanics, intentionally withholding bug reports, or generally trying to disrupt the system, the motivation to continue building content like this may disappear quickly.

These systems are heavily tracked. If you tamper with them, we will know. Please just enjoy them as intended.

Now, because this is a major release and because these are exciting times, I also wanted to add something fun. With permission from Vampa and Elysia, I will be hosting a contest tied directly to these newly released quests.

The first three players to complete every quest from both mobs will receive prizes. Mail me directly when you believe you have completed them.

Prizes:

1st Place: Heron of your choice
2nd Place: Rare of your choice
3rd Place: Three potion pouches of your choice

So, get out there. Spread the word that new content is rolling in, and most importantly, have fun. Don't forget Elysia is bringing back solo smobs and other treats too.

P.S. Darkside, I have not forgotten about you. Give me time. I fully intend to take care of your side as well. It will not be implemented in exactly the same way since your faction is built around conflict and taking what you want, but I do have plans in the works. Bear with me a little longer.

If you are around in the evenings, I have also been running smaller contests for the sides and sending Darkside groups on short quests for rare loot. Feel free to join in.

P.S.S Any bugs or issues message me directly on the WoT discord.

CLUES
=========
As this goes on and we aren't finding these locations I will begin to give more clues.

1.Being directed towards a place does not meet the item or mobs are there. At times it means you need to go to the city or place mentioned and try to use prompts. There will never be a mob that you need to interact with outside of a city in a random place. And they will always be in a "prominent" spot. Their words can be followed almost to a t. If they say a direction, it is that direction, you just have to pay attention. There are only a few of these, so don't expect them.

2. These items will not always be on the ground. Sometimes you'll need to really pay attention and look for mobs that do not belong or were not there before. Perhaps some that are unique with unique things in their room to give away that they are worth investigating further.

3. Hold your cards close to your chest. But there will come a time where you absolutely need help. Don't be afraid to ask friends and team up. Remember you can always roll for things as well. At some point some of you will have some clues and pieces while others have their own. When you feel you're ready don't be afraid to share information and haggle out a deal!

Quarter 2:

The second set of quarterly quests for the Smarmy Man and Joncask are now live.

Beginning today, a new set of quests is available from both mobs. Visit either one and you will be prompted as normal.

These quests will follow the same structure as before. They are not repeatable within the same quarter. You may complete them on multiple characters.

The goal remains the same. These quests are designed to give players new ways to advance their characters, explore the world, work together, and discover things they may have missed before.

As before, the clues are not always straightforward. Pay attention. Explore. Ask questions. Work together when needed. Sometimes the answer is not where you expect it to be.

The contest format is also changing slightly.

Rather than rewarding the fastest completion, everyone who completes all of the quests from both mobs within the first week will have their name entered into a pool. At the end of that period, one name will be drawn at random and that player will receive the prize.

This is to give more people an opportunity to participate rather than simply rewarding whoever happens to finish first.

Prizes:

1st Place: Heron of your choice

2nd Place: Rare of your choice

3rd Place: Three potion pouches of your choice

Your winners will be posted here.

If you encounter bugs, issues, or have suggestions that are genuinely useful, please reach out to me through the WoTMUD Discord.

I regularly offer bounties to players who help identify problems and improve things.

As always, if this system is exploited, abused, or intentionally manipulated, it will be removed. A lot of time goes into creating things like this, and I would rather spend that time building new content than dealing with people trying to break it.

For now, get out there, see what you can find, spread the word, and most importantly, have fun.

P.S. Make sure you wait for the mobs to finish speaking before handing over the next item. They will indicate when they are done.
