Amarea Helsen, Tower Accepted and apprentice to the Brown Ajah will be leading a class this week on Far Madding. This class will provide an in-depth look at the history of the city-state of Far Madding, spanning from the Age of Legends to the modern day. Key historical events from each epoch of time will be reviewed, as well as their implication for Far Madding's culture. The class will culminate in a field trip to Far Madding itself, including a tour of points of interests in the city and their historical significance. Please have a horse ready for the journey in case we go on foot. Of note, novices are encouraged to attend the class and will be permitted on the field trip as long as an Aes Sedai is available and willing to provide an escort, per Tower law.

In the Classroom
A board of black slate hangs on the wall near the door, suggesting this
room is used as a classroom. The room is plain and windowless and has
enough place to seat thirty students. A dais with a desk sits at the front
of the room, where the Aes Sedai or Accepted teaching the class can sit.

Zone: White Tower Upper Floors
Door west: door
A small cup sits here.
A small cup sits here. [2]
A greasy shank of roasted mutton has been dropped here. [3]
A thick hunk of peppered beef has been left here. [2]
Magius the Wall Lieutenant is standing here.
Lady Chloro Arovni is standing here.
Kayda an'Sorin, the Fledgling Novice is sitting here.
Lady Divina Souvraya is standing here.
Arelis Au'riliuz Tower Accepted is standing here.
Lady Liia Averon, the Brown Cartographer is standing here.
Hadley the Wearied Novice is standing here.
Perenelle Flamel, Journey Accepted is standing here.
Merrianne Jukari, the Gate Guard is standing here.
Maddy Mantear, Tower Accepted is standing here.
A large man eyes the surroundings warily, every movement fluid.
A haughty young woman strides by practicing Aes Sedai serenity.
Amarea says 'It's an honor to have you all.'
Amarea turns to the chalk board and writes 'Far Madding' on the board, then turns to the rest of the room.
The door is opened from the other side.
Mykael has arrived from the west.
Amarea smiles at Mykael.
Liia inclines her head in greeting to Mykael.
Mykael bows deeply.
Amarea says 'Just in time, sir!'
Maddy beams a smile at Mykael.
Merrianne snaps to attention and salutes Mykael.
Arelis nods at Amarea.
Mykael snaps to attention and salutes Merrianne.
Amarea says 'As I was sayin', the purpose of this class is to delve into the history of the city-state we know today as Far Madding, includin' several key events that shaped that history.'
Amarea says 'We will then take a field trip to the city itself for a brief tour and to discuss contemporary issues and facts about the city and its
culture.'
Amarea says 'Before we talk about actual events, to give structure and context, I will briefly discuss the different calendar systems that will be referenced later, for those who may not have spent much time in the library.'
Amarea smiles happily.
Chloro scans the room before adjusting her fringed shawl and heading towards the back of the room with her sisters. Boot heels clicking in a rhythmic fashion.
Amarea says 'First, we have the calendar created by Toma dur Ahmid, which was adopted about two centuries after the death of the last known male Aes Sedai. The Toman calendar records dates in years After the Breaking of the World, or AB, and was used until the Trolloc Wars ended about 1,350 years later.'
Amarea says 'Second, a scholar by the name of Tiam of Gazar created a new calendar to herald the end of the deadly Trolloc Wars. The Gazaran calendar marked dates in years since the assumed end of the Trolloc threat, more simply known as Free Years, or FY.'
Amarea says 'Finally, the Farede calendar that you all know and use in the present day was invented by a Sea Folk scholar named Uren din Jubai Soaring Gull. This calendar was widely adopted in approximately FY 1135, after the War of the Hundred Years and the end of Artur Hawkwing's empire. This calendar marks years of the New Era, or NE.'
Amarea turns to the black slate and writes in a neat script, 'Age of Legends', before turning back to the classroom.
Amarea says 'Now, very few historical records of anythin' have survived in great detail from before the Breakin' of the World. But, from what little has survived, we can piece together that the area known today as Far Madding was once the spot of a city, or perhaps a city-state, by the name of Aren Deshar, although we don't know how long the city stood or when it fell.'
Amarea says 'From what little we do know about the city itself, records suggest that there was a community here known as the enclave of the Incastar. This group was against the use of channelin' the One Power. Or, perhaps they were against progressive research into the One Power and held more conservative views about how the Power should be used. They likely protested the Aes Sedai at every chance.'
Amarea's eyebrows pull down into a frown.
Maddy leans forward slighly, chin in hands as she listens intently to Amarea.
Amarea says 'Although the details are not in great supply, you will see a common thread throughout parts of our lesson tonight about some of the cultural implications of this group.'
Perenelle takes notes in a precise if not very pretty hand.
Amarea muses with a small frown, 'We know in hindsight, of course, that they had reason to be concerned, for it was unrestrained research that led into the accidental creation of the Bore that partially released the Dark One from his prison.'
Hadley says 'Good thing your class is never a bore!'
Amarea pauses and asks, 'Am I speakin' too fast, or is this pace alright so far?'
Hadley blushes.
Hadley sinks down into her seat.
Liia peers closely at Hadley, trying to figure her out.
Perenelle says 'So far so good for me, Amarea.'
Amarea emulates an image of Aes Sedai calm as best she can as she looks at the novice, continuing without comment.
Arelis listens intensely as the lecture sounds very interesting.
Amarea turns back to the black slate and writes, 'After the Breaking of the World.'
Amarea says 'There are no exact accounts of how long the Breaking of the World lasted, but most scholars think that it lasted between 239 and 344 years. In fact, the confusion surroundin' the actual date was part of the reason the Toman calendar was adopted.'
Kayda looks up from her notebook and says, "I am keeping up, Accepted Amarea" before turning back to writing her notes.
Amarea smiles at Kayda.
Amarea says 'By this time, historical records are relatively more confident, and we know more specifics of the nations that were forged after the
Breaking. In 202 AB, we also know that construction was completed in Tar Valon and of the White Tower itself.'
Amarea says 'Seven years later, in 209 AB, the famed Aes Sedai of the Gray Ajah, Queen Mabriam en Shereed of Aramaelle, brought together all of the great nations that made up the Westlands at that time and bound them in a mutual alliance against the Shadow known as the Compact of Ten Nations. Mabriam Sedai was in fact a significant ta'veren.'
Maddy nudges Hadley, giving her a slight frown as she motions for her to sit up and to pay attention.
Amarea smiles at Chloro Sedai as she mentions the famed Gray sister of history.
Amarea says 'Now, sometime between the Breaking and this time, Aren Deshar had fallen and had been replaced with Aren Mador, the capital city of Essenia, and their First Lord Cristol was one of the signatories of the Compact.'
Magius checks that the door is still secure.
Amarea says 'Essenia was the southeasternmost nation in the Westlands, with quite wide borders. It stretched in the west from the Manetherendrelle and Shal rivers to the Spine of the World in the east, and from the northern edge of the Haddon Mirk forest all the way to the coast of the Sea of Storms.'
Chloro gives Amarea a slight and even keeled nod.
Perenelle says 'That large an area?'
Amarea smirks as she continues, 'For all of their infighting, modern Tear, Mayene, and the eastern half of Illian were all originally constituents of
Essenia. It also included what today is known as the Plains of Maredo, most of the Haddon Mirk, the Hills of Kintara, and Far Madding.'
Kayda turns the page of her notebook, then dips her pen in the inkwell before continuing to write.
Amarea nods at Perenelle.
Amarea says 'Yes. Interestin' point, Perenelle, when the Westlands were divided originally into the Ten Nations, Essenia was possibly one of the largest of them.'
Arelis looks at Kayda from the corner of her eye and chuckles.
Amarea says 'It seems like many of the nations had quite large borders and claimed a great amount of territory.'
Amarea says 'Aramaelle might have been a little bigger, or Coremanda, but Essenia was on the larger side at least.'
Perenelle says 'Seems foreign to the way things have shrunk with large tracts of unclaimed areas now.'
Amarea nods in agreement.
Liia pulls out an old frayed map from her pouch and refers to it discreetly.
Divina makes more mental notes in the annuls of her brain.
Arelis beams a smile at Divina.
Someone knocks on the door from the other side.
Maddy catches Arelis' eye, motioning her head towards Hadley indicating she wil lneed watching.
Amarea opens the door.
Magius says 'some areas are claimed only on paper even now'
Draz has arrived from the west.
Amarea closes the door.
Amarea smiles at Draz.
Liia inclines her head in greeting to Draz.
Arelis beams a smile at Draz.
Merrianne nods at Magius.
Amarea returns back to the lecture.
Amarea says 'Essenia did not have a single monarch, but was ruled by a noble oligarchy. In other words, a coalition of nobles who had largely equal power and duties were responsible for leadin' the country. They were guided by their First Lord, who from the records was believed to be a first among equals.'
Hadley nibbles on her shank of mutton, oblivious to the attention she has garnered.
Amarea says 'The Compact was successful at holding the peace and unitin' the nations against the threat of the Shadow and Darkfriends for over 800 years, and the Westlands were ushered into an era of peace and prosperity as a result.'
Amarea says 'That bein' said, the world still witnessed violence. In 335 AB, a male channeler by the name of Raolin Darksbane, born in Aren Mador, claimed to be the Dragon Reborn. He was ultimately captured by a contingent of Aes Sedai, brought back to Tar Valon, and gentled.'
Amarea says 'Darkbane's followers actually marched on Tar Valon and mounted an assault in an attempt to free him, but they were unsuccessful. He was, so far as we know it, the very first False Dragon, but a very powerful channeler accordin' to the histories. And as you'll note throughout the lesson, he is only one of many renowned - or infamous - channelers from the area.'
Liia's eyes narrow slightly.
The door is opened from the other side.
Artorias has arrived from the west.
A young Tower Guard has arrived from the west.
Artorias closes the door.
Liia inclines her head in greeting to Artorias.
Arelis beams a smile at Artorias.
Artorias tries to silently sneak in the door.
Maddy beams a smile at Artorias.
Amarea pauses here, scanning the classroom. 'So, the Age of Legends and the Breakin' of the World. Any questions so far?'
Maddy shakes her head.
Chloro looks to the class and nods confirming Amarea's statement on false dragons.
Draz says 'were there many less successful declared dragon reborns during this period/?'
Arelis mutters to herself "men....pffttt."
Amarea pauses to consider the question.
Merrianne says 'I have one, as a Far Madding native. A *Lord* was the "first among equals?'
Draz says 'particularly local to the region'
Hadley scans her notes and raises her hand.
Maddy smiles a nod of encouragement at Hadley.
Hadley lowers her hand as she realizes her fingers are glistening with mutton grease.
Amarea says 'Draz Gaidin, although the histories from several millennia ago could possibly be missin' key details, I would argue that the significance of someone claimin' to be the Dragon at this time in history would be so noteworthy that it would not be overlooked.'
Arelis beams a smile at Hadley.
Hadley grins sheepishly, then stifles a laugh as she realizes the irony of grinning sheepishly while eating mutton.
Liia chuckles politely.
Amarea says 'Remember that this was a world still reelin' from the death of Lews Therin Telamon and the ramifications of his attack on the Bore, in the nature of how the entire world had shifted with the Breakin'. I don't think many would claim to be him reincarnated.'
Maddy leans over, smiles at Hadley as she taps her desk and points to the front of the room.
Perenelle says 'I wonder why Darksbane did then.'
Perenelle muses to herself mostly.
Draz thinks hard.
Hadley says 'Oh, you've not met many men then...'
Amarea says 'Gate Guard Merrianne, you have an interestin' question too. I wonder how nobility might have been viewed in that historical context, and ther our notions of nobility may or may not have changed. But as I noted, it was a noble oligarchy that ruled the city, so I imagine the nobles had certain views about where they stood relative to each other and the common people.'
Draz says 'visions and voices, wasn't it?'
Arelis looks at hadley from the corner of her left eye and chuckles.
Merrianne nods in agreement.
Draz mutters softly 'always its visions and voices'.
Merrianne says 'I was just more confused by the fact it was a man, not a woman.'
Amarea says 'Ah, yes, that is a good point.'
Merrianne scoffs at the idea of men leading!
Liia nods at Merrianne.
Amarea says 'We will touch on the matriarchal society of the region and its implications for modern day Far Madding in a few minutes.'
Merrianne nods in agreement.
Amarea says 'But yes, so far as we know, Aren Mador did not have a matriarchal society at this time.'
Magius scans the room and checks the door.
Amarea says 'It's not clear, in fact, whether women were part of the oligarchy at all.'
Draz says 'apologies ladies'
Draz opens the door.
Draz leaves west.
Amarea turns back to the black slate and writes 'Trolloc Wars' in a neat script.
Magius closes the door.
Artorias says 'There is a Dreadlord needs removing'
Artorias bows deeply.
Artorias opens the door.
Artorias leaves west.
A young Tower Guard leaves west.
The door closes quietly.
Maddy nods in agreement.
Amarea frowns.
Amarea nods in agreement.
Hadley wipes her hands on a napkin and raises her now-clean hand.
Amarea frowns as she turns back to the room and continues, 'The peace brought about by the Compact of the Ten Nations was suddenly shattered in 1000 AB n a vast horde of Shadowspawn invaded from the Blight and destroyed Barsine, a city of Jaramide, the northwesternmost kingdom of its time. Thus marked the beginnin' of what is now known as the Trolloc Wars.'
Maddy beams a smile at Hadley.
Amarea says 'In total, the Trolloc Wars continued for nearly 350 years, and the Shadow ravaged the Westlands in a war of a scale that had not been seen since the War of the Shadow that brought about the end of the Age of Legends.'
Amarea says 'Now, at some undetermined point in the past millennium, Aren Mador's name had changed, and the city known today as Far Madding was instead known during the Trolloc Wars as Fel Moreina.'
Amarea says 'This is not to be confused with the nation of Moreina, which I will mention soon.'
Amarea chuckles politely.
Amarea says 'Initially, the Ten Nations fought valiantly and repelled the Dreadlords and their armies of Shadowspawn. In the time of the Trolloc Wars, however, the Ten Nations had separate armies that primarily utilized a "home rule" under their national leaders.'
Amarea says 'This meant that as each nation in turn faced hordes of Trollocs, the neighborin' nations were cautious to send out their forces beyond their borders to help, out of fear that they would have no forces left to defend their own people. This principle of war greatly strained the Compact and weakened their efforts over time.'
Amarea says 'The people of Aren Mador joined the armies of Essenia and fought bravely at the Battle of Maighande in 1301 AB alongside Tar Valon, Aelgar, Eharon, Jaramide, and Safer. In the most decisive victory of the Trolloc Wars, the heroes of the Light routed the Trollocs, essentially ending the war.'
Amarea says 'However, this victory came at great cost.'
Amarea's eyebrows pull down into a frown.
Amarea says 'These nations had overextended their forces. Over the next 50 to 150 years, all of these nations but Tar Valon gradually fell apart and disintegrated into 29 new, smaller nations or city-states.'
Amarea says 'Essenia, specifically, fell in the aftermath of the Battle of Maighande and gave birth to the nations of Esandara, Fergansea, Moreina, and Talmour, with Esandara includin' Fel Moreina, the city that would later become Far Madding.'
Amarea says 'One more significant and relevant event during this era was that a man by the name of Yurian Stonebow, a native of Fel Moreina, declared himself the Dragon in approximately 1300 AB, just before the Battle of Maighande. It is said he killed three Aes Sedai and captured another three by himself before he was eventually captured and gentled in 1308 AB.'
Magius frowns.
Amarea pauses again, leaning against the dais as she asks, 'Does anyone have any questions currently?'
Maddy shakes her head.
Liia says 'Multiple false dragons from around the same area... interesting.'
Liia strokes her chin thoughtfully.
Amarea nods thoughtfully.
Maddy nods at Liia.
Chloro visibly recoils at the mention of the more known False Dragon from Far Madding.
Liia says 'Do you happen to recall if Yurian could channel as well?'
Maddy says 'Wonder if they were related somehow.'
Amarea says 'The histories do support that, because there was a public declaration of his gentling.'
Liia nods at Amarea.
Chloro says 'Accepted.'
Hadley whispers something to Maddy.
Kayda says 'Do any of these nations still exist? Besides Tar Valon, obviously.'
Maddy gasps in astonishment.
Maddy snickers softly.
Chloro says 'Do you know the number of Aes Sedai lost in the many attempts to capture him?'
Perenelle pauses in her note taking at the questions.
Hadley whispers something to Maddy.
Amarea looks back down at her notes and says, 'So far as I am aware, as I said, he personally claimed to have killed three Aes Sedai, and captured another three alive. But it is possible these details are exaggerated given the significance.'
Maddy puts her finger to her lips, shushing Hadley, pointing once more to the front of the room.
Chloro nods and looks to the others with questions.
Hadley uses more mutton to keep her mouth occupied.
Liia moves to stand behind Hadley and Maddy's seats to keep an eye on them.
Amarea says 'As for Kayda's questions, the specific nations I've named so far no longer exist.'
Kayda nods in agreement.
Arelis looks at Hadley from the corner of her left eye and chuckles to herself.
Amarea says 'Off the top of my head, I can't remember how many of the 29 that began nations here kept their name into modern day. It's further complicated as I will discuss in a minute after we consider the impact of Artur Hawkwing.'
Hadley wonders if Arelis' eyes move independently of each other.
Amarea says 'So far as I can remember, though, I do not believe any in fact retained their national heritage or survived the Hawkwing empire.'
Amarea writes on the slate, 'the Free Years.'
Amarea says 'As previously discussed, in approximately 1350 AB, during the strife caused by the dissolution and formin' of so many nations, the Gazaran calendar was widely adopted throughout the Westlands at the beginnin' of what is referred to today as the Free Years epoch, or the time seemingly marked by freedom from the Trolloc threat.'
Amarea says 'Now, much of the history of Far Madding is relatively quiet for nearly a millennium at the start of the Free Years epoch. This all ended in FY 939, when the infamous man by the name of Guaire Amalasan declared himself as the Dragon Reborn in the nation of Darmovan, which includes modern day Falme and Katar.'
Amarea says 'Over the next four years, Amalasan waged what is referred to as the War of the Second Dragon when he and his "Children of the Dragon" cut a large swath across the western and southern nations of the Westlands, claiming between one third and one half of the continent, including Esandara in FY 939.'
Perenelle arches an eyebrow.
Amarea says 'The histories suggest that Esandara's capital by this time may have been named Far Madding, although I found another reference that suggested it was still Fel Moreina. Amalasan laid siege to the city and claimed it in three weeks. However, he was later beaten in a decisive victory by Artur Paendrag Tanreall in FY 943 at the Battle of the Jolvaine Pass.'
Amarea says 'Over the next 20 years, a series of events largely outside the scope of this class led to the War of the Consolidation, ending in FY 963 when Panreall, known by this time as Artur Hawkwing, was declared the High King of the Westlands, which were united under a single empire.'
Amarea says 'Hawkwing's death in FY 994, at which time he had no surviving heir for a variety of reasons, plunged the Westlands into chaos. His empire disintegrated as one by one, nations around the continent claimed independence, including Andor, Cairhien, Tear, and the five Borderland provinces: Arafel, Kandor, Malkier, Saldaea, and Shienar.'
Amarea says 'Thus began the War of the Hundred Years, so named because it spanned over approximately 130 years, brought about by the collapse of his empire.'
Maddy sits straighter in her seat, eyes stiil on Amarea, sighing slightly in relief that Liia Sedai will watch the Novice.
Rize arrives from a flash of bright white light.
Amarea says 'It was during this war in FY 999 that the territory formerly known as Esandara was split into the kingdoms of Kintara and Maredo, the latter of which included the city of Far Madding.'
Hadley gasps in astonishment.
Amarea blinks her eyes innocently.
Arelis chuckles politely.
Liia shows minimal surprise.
Rize gives and awkward curtsey and takes a seat.
Maddy frowns at Rize, turning to see how the Aes Sedai take this arrival.
Amarea quietly motions for Rize to head to an open seat in the back of the room.
Arelis looks at the flashy entrance.
Rize nods at Amarea.
Hadley raises her hand, fingers once again glistening.
Amarea says 'Yes, Hadley?'
Rize sits down.
Hadley says 'I was under the impression Hawkwing did have at least one descendent.'
Hadley says 'Smuggled to the south, he was.'
Maddy nods at Hadley.
Maddy says 'Mayene claims so.'
Amarea says 'This part is complicated, and it's a good question.'
Hadley says 'Also, perhaps outside the scope of this class, I apologize.'
Hadley says 'I'll return to my mutton.'
Hadley gets a mutton shank.
Hadley tastes a little bit of a mutton shank.
Hadley sips from the cup.
Amarea says 'We also have the Seanchan Empress alleging that she is descendant from Hawking as well, and that threat was not yet developed by the time these events were occurring.'
Amarea says 'Multiple of his children were assassinated or fell in battle. And for such power his dynasty would have, there would be great reason for his heirs to be targeted by many.'
Amarea says 'It is fair to say accurately that none of his heirs were publicly known at the time of his death, or provable by any clear means.'
Maddy says 'Tyrn sur Paendrag Mashera was the grandson of Artur Hawkwing according to Mayene.'
Maddy says 'The current First is descended from him.'
Arelis gets a mutton shank.
Arelis eats a mutton shank.
Hadley says 'Near as I can tell, he didn't name his son after himself, though.'
Hadley says 'Which is a shame, as one good Tyrn deserves another.'
Amarea nods at Maddy.
Perenelle shakes her head.
Magius frowns.
Chloro clears her throat and looks to Amarea with a knowing look not offering question.
Maddy looks at Liia Sedai for direction.
Amarea says 'Mayene made its claim in FY 1004, shortly after Tear had claimed independence from Hawkwing and was too busy defending itself.'
Merrianne tries to hide her chuckle.
Liia coughs loudly.
Amarea says 'In the interest of time, I would recommend we move more closely back to the subject at hand of Far Madding.'
Maddy nods in agreement.
Merrianne nods in agreement.
Amarea says 'The nation of Maredo was founded by Lady Danella Mathendrin, who claimed all of the Plains of Maredo and part of modern day Murandy, and Far Madding was its capital. Notably, Maredo was a matriarchal nation, and the Counsels of Far Madding served as political advisors to the queen.'
Amarea says 'And here, Gate Guard Merrianne, is our first reference to a matriarchal society in the area now known as Far Madding.'
Amarea smiles at Merrianne.
Chloro winks at her Brown sister and nods with Aes Sedai calm.
Amarea says 'There is surprisingly not much else known about Maredo's fairly short history. By 500 NE, approximately 636 years later, the nation of Maredo collapsed, but its capital Far Madding survived as a smaller, independent city-state, and the First Counsel was accepted as a political successor of sorts to the queens of Maredo.'
Maddy slides gracefully from her seat, stretching her back until it cracks, then bends down to get her bag.
Amarea says 'I have now summarized the history of Far Madding. For the final portion of this class, we will be takin' a field trip to the city itself, I will bring us on a brief tour and share additional information about the modern day city.'
Liia considers a short 636 years.
Amarea chuckles politely.
Arelis giggles.
Divina ruffles Liia's hair playfully.
Perenelle gathers her notebook, sanding it dry then puts things away.
Perenelle clambers to her feet.
Perenelle says 'Odd that not much record of that nation has survived.'
Merrianne cracks her knuckles.
Chloro says 'Accepted, before we travel.'
Amarea nods at Perenelle.
Arelis says 'That was great information Amarea. Thank you.'
Maddy nods in agreement.
Amarea says 'Yes, Aes Sedai?'
Maddy says 'Yes well done Amarea.'
Arelis says 'A true librarian at heart it seems.'
Chloro says 'You mentioned many False dragons during the course of this lesson. Have no formidable Aes Sedai also come Far Madding? It seems strength in the one power is common there.'
Maddy says 'Cadsuane Sedai perhaps?'
Amarea chuckles politely.
Merrianne says 'I have had a theory on that, personally.'
Amarea says 'The information I've prepared with talkin' points about modern day Far Madding I had intended to share as we move about the city. I have a few key points of interest and topics I still have left.'
Maddy nods at Amarea.
Perenelle nods and holds back a question for now.
Chloro says 'Then I will await that part of the lesson. Members of the Wall Guard if you would follow me please.'
Hadley says 'Huh, an area notorious for being against the use of the One Power produces some very strong channelers. How interesting.'
Merrianne nods in agreement.
Maddy sits back down on the edge of her desk, ready to get up when the next point is made.
Mykael thanks Divina heartily.
Amarea says 'Alright, I can return to that question in a little bit.'
Amarea says 'I had intended to ride by horseback, so if we can meet in the Tower Square in a few minutes we can be on our way.'
Magius says 'I must insist we discuss security while in far madding'
Maddy says 'So should we all get horses'
Kayda says 'I apologize, but I must retire'
Merrianne nods in agreement.
Rize blinks her eyes innocently.
Amarea says 'I would get your horse, yes.'
Kayda says 'ooc (family things, gotta log off)'
Amarea nods at Kayda.
Maddy nods in agreement.
Perenelle opens the door.
Arelis nods at Kayda.
Amarea says 'I can lead a group for anyone not currently following.'
Arelis says 'are we riding there?'
Chloro says 'We shall meet you at the northen guard post Accepted, Far Madding has a few rules about traveling in its walls.'
Hadley says 'Do you think there are a lot of self-hating channelers weak in the One Power in Far Madding?'
Kayda says 'This was most wonderful, Accepted Amarea. I look forward to the day I can leave Tar Valon to take a field trip like this.'
Kayda curtseys gracefully.
Hadley says 'I guess they wouldn't manifest their abilities under the ter'angreal.'

Magius says 'also if an attack come 1 s 1 e the north gate is the captain of our guard thats where to meet up'
Amarea nods thoughtfully.
Magius nods at Amarea.
Mykael nods at Magius.
Amarea smiles and says, 'Thank you, Wall Lieutenant. I am grateful for you and your Guard's support.'
Perenelle looks in the distance to the city and shivers just a bit.
Chloro says 'Master Magius would you lead our party please. '
Magius says 'that is all, Far Madding is yours'
Amarea says 'This is the first point I had intended to share as well, a comment about how the local culture may be influenced by the history of the city.'
Perenelle starts following Amarea.
Amarea says 'All visitors in the city are required by Far Madding law to remove their weapons. Historically, being seen with a drawn weapon would get you thrown immediately in jail. The Wall Guard have relaxed their laws somewhat, but your bladed weapons will be "peace bonded" upon entry, and the guards will know if you have drawn them from their scabbard.'
Amarea says 'Far Madding has a foreign policy with predominant tenets of nationalism and conservatism. They are especially conservative with regards to views about the One Power and channelers, with the roots of this policy possibly traceable all the way back to Aren Deshar and groups such as the enclave of the Incastar, as we discussed.'
Amarea says 'First, we'll head through the Caemlyn Gate.'

Inside the Caemlyn Gate
A pair of iron-strapped gates tower above the street to the north, shadowed
on either side by thick-walled grey brick watchtowers. A wooden ladder has
been bolted to a wall, permitting entry to the tower areas and the top of
the gate to assist in defending the city of Far Madding. In the south a
wide boulevard split down the middle by trees makes its way into the heart
of the bustling island city.

The hawkers singsong cries fill the air with a cacophony of wares for sale.
Amarea says 'Far Madding is a prominent hub of commerce, as you'll see from the layout of the city and the emphasis it places on trading hubs. Here, in the city's most prominent marketplace, you can rest without much fear of someone stabbin' you in the back.'
Perenelle smiles a little at the market activity.
Amarea grins at Magius.
Amarea says 'This is one of three Strangers' Markets in the city. Far Madding has three of these, named so because foreigners, or strangers to the city, are only allowed to trade in one of these three marketplaces. Each of them is named after one of the prominent First Counsels in Far Madding's history, this one being named after Einion Ahvarin.'
Magius smiles happily.
Amarea says 'Lookin' around the room, does anyone notice anythin' about this marketplace that stands out to you?'
Hadley says 'There's a giant statue.'
Maddy looks around admiring the very clean ordered Ccty with a slight nod of appreciation.
Amarea nods in agreement.
Amarea says 'Yes, you can LOOK at the STATUE here of Einion Ahvarin.'
Arelis smiles happily.
Hadley says 'Ah yes, I gain much detail by peering at it more closely.'
Maddy tilts her head and narrows her eyes to better study the statue.
Amarea says 'I was not able to find much detail about this woman, except that she was a previous First Counsel and must have held the hearts of the people here to place such a statue of her.'
Amarea says 'The other Strangers' Markets in the city are the Nethvin Market, whose namesake is not clear from any history books I've read, and the Amhara Market, named after Savion Amhara.'
Arelis nods at Amarea.
Amarea says 'Now, to return to Chloro Sedai's question. Other than some of the infamous False Dragons we discussed earlier, Far Madding is well known for some other famous individuals by history. Can anyone name any?'
Perenelle says 'I wouldn't know.'
Amarea says 'I think Maddy mentioned one earlier.'
Arelis says 'Cadsuane Sedai?'
Maddy says 'Cadsuane Sedai.'
Amarea nods in agreement.
Hadley shivers uncomfortably.
Liia smiles happily.
Amarea says 'Far Madding is the birthplace of at least three previous Amyrlins. Sareille Bagand, who passed away in 890 NE, was originally of the White Ajah. Aleis Romlin, who died in 922 NE and was Bagand's successor, was originally of the Green Ajah. And Cadsuane Melaihdrin, also of the Green Ajah, stepped down in 1328 NE (2/24/20) amidst criticism about how she guided the Tower against the False Dragon Bardomir Lazar.'
Maddy nods in agreement.
Amarea says 'Three other Aes Sedai born in Far Madding include Verin Mathwin and Escaralde Hamdey of the Brown Ajah, and Romanda Cassin of the Yellow Ajah.'
Magius scans the area for danger.
Arelis nods at Amarea.
Maddy says 'She is one of my favorite reads. Her life was facinating.'
Amarea says 'It's noteworthy that Verin Sedai was actually exiled from the city of Far Madding when her ability to channel was discovered, so the stories go, an example of how channeling is still viewed here in the city by some.'
Amarea says 'As we noted, Far Madding is known for its commerce, and one of its more well-known exports is precious gemstones. For anyone who has a keen eye for fancy trinkets or desires to try their hand at harvestin' such gems, you will find yourself visitin' this city, specifically its gemcutter.'

A master gemcutter says 'However, such a stone will yield smaller gemstones of suitable quality.'
A master gemcutter holds the stone he's working on up to the light as he examines it through his monocle.

Merrianne says 'I would, actually, and it involves our Guardian.'

Merrianne says 'Amarea will say more about it, but in effect, those in this city are unable to sense the Source, and many stay here vs adventure
across the world.'
Maddy nods at Merrianne.
Merrianne says 'I think at some point, after the Stedding solution to the male channeler problem failed, Far Madding may have offered another
solution.'
Arelis nods at Merrianne.

Merrianne says 'Mykael or Magius may be better equipped to answer about jump exits.'
Magius says 'yes '
Amarea says 'Perenelle, that is an excellent question.'
Magius says '2 jumps exits'
Amarea says 'The histories are not completely clear on when the Guardian was installed, but most estimates believe it was added some time durin' the Breaking of the World, when this city was either known as Aren Deshar or, more likely, Aren Mador by then. It was likely built to help protect the nation against outside influence from the One Power and channelers as a whole, especially men who can channel.'
Merrianne says 'Still, whether or not male channelers were ever deliberately imprisoned here...'
Arelis says 'ahhh Thank you Magius'
Magius nods at Arelis.
Amarea says 'Whether the intention of the Guardian was to keep madmen in, rather than keepin' them out, I cannot say. It's an interestin' idea though.'
Merrianne says 'Because the men do not go mad, and are happy to live on their allowances, it means they can continue to have offspring.'
Arelis raises her hand.
Perenelle nods but continues to frown slightly.
Amarea says 'Yes, Arelis?'
Merrianne says 'If they have an undetected ability to channel, or if our women do, they will never know unless they choose to leave.'
Arelis says 'Being that the city is protected from anyone using the One Power, does Far Madding have strong ties to the Children and Hand of Light?'
Merrianne says 'We have treaties and trade with nearly every nation, including Amadacia.'
Arelis nods at Merrianne.
Magius says 'There are many theories but the reasons why and when are mostly just tavern talk'
Merrianne says 'But the Children of the Light cannot attack a Tower member in Far Madding without getting a warrant.'
Merrianne says 'And vice versa.'
Arelis nods at Merrianne.
Hadley says 'Are you concerned that Amadician influence could lead to a stronger presence of the Children of the Light in the area?'
Amarea says 'As I noted earlier, Far Madding can be fairly described as favorin' a nationalist and conservatist approach to politics. Neutrality is a
mainstay of the city's political course, in order to support its commercial hub.'
Hadley says 'I imagine they view the Guardian as a powerful tool they would love to control.'
Amarea nods thoughtfully.

Merrianne says 'And the Guardian is... well... rather bulky.'
Merrianne snickers softly.
Magius chuckles politely.
Maddy says 'Do you have a healer in the City?'
Amarea says 'We are nearin' the end of the history lesson, and this is a good point to pivot to our final stop, the Hall of Counsels and the Guardian
itself.'
Magius says 'we do'
Maddy nods at Magius.
Maddy says 'That is good to hear.'

Maddy says 'should we leave horses here'

The title currently belongs to Aleis Barsalla, also the leader of the Far Madding Wall Guard. Does anyone recall a tradition from the city's history that may be an inspiration for this title?'
