I'm struggling to beat level 1. I can't get over the huge chasm! And now I think I died so many times it's not letting me redo that part unless I start from the beginning.

Each time you do a backflip, you gain speed. It's noted by the trail behind you. It gets longer the faster you go. If you have enough speed I'm sure you'll be able to get over that chasm.
