79 is not enough. It took me three tries of "search west" on my test mort too, but then I found it and was able to open it. It's just a door. No fancy schmancy mobol involved. Open-shut case, really.

When opening (or otherwise interacting) with a hidden door, your skill in search is checked. If you can open, but not detect the presence of, a hidden door, then it will cost moves to open (or close, etc.) the hidden door.

FWIW: Feneon has 100% search and the failure rate on searching west is 3 fails out of 10 attempts. If you have enough search and you type search direction, every search isn't a guaranteed success, it is a risk of failure. Likely Ryoz's search attempts were unlucky.

The reactive one is that 100% search failing 3/10 isn't out of line with anecdotal evidence of never having had a search fail with sufficient search (err possible exception of waterfall in volcano), and being told that while average wasn't enough, not having any inplication that it needs to be way higher.
Nor does it fit with not a single person being able to find a log of a human opening the door, every instance we have been able to find was open or opened by imms. Other than wellstone in Caem I don't know any door requiring higher than these.
It also doesn't fit with a group being reimbursed the load because the door didn't open, which would imply a bug or unforseen issue.

The considered one is
- Thank you for sharing, clearly none of us involved have a strong understanding of the mechanics
- Posting the logs engendered a clear response, when mailing or telling imms didn't
- I would appreciate if imms consider that for a time gated difficult encounter that can't be predicted to trigger or who will get booted that this seems an unnecessarily high bar for something intended to promote group play.
- mechanically this implies that searching the direction with no door there won't cost moves, and searching it with will.

Considering my test mortal could open the door in 3 tries with the bare minimum search requirement, I disagree. If my test mortal can 'search west' and reveal the doorname, this is on players assuming too quickly that something is a bug.

What you say is an exception, the waterfall in volcano, is just another door too. There are no special failrate settings to doors. A door is a door, unless it's a mobol door. Searching and opening them all builds on the same game commands and game skills. So even your experience suggests that what I said, "took 3 tries with bare minimum search" and Feneon's "3/10 fails" is true.

I've built and tested enough doors to know they're not 100%. It's just that most doors have a way lower search requirement. Given the high yield of TAR, asking people to invest pracs skill is not too big of an ask. Heaven forbid you may have to give something up, or ask someone along with a different prac setup in order to be succesful.

I opened the door twice while online doing something else and both times told the groups it was possible to open door because I opened door and that they needed more search to open the door.

The reason that there isn't a log of a human opening the door is because I opened the door twice for groups and since then, instead of figuring it out on their own, they default to pinging immortals to get the door opened because the door isn't working.

And the direct reason to quote Aureus' change is not to point anything to the mechanic 'search' it is to point you to the mechanic 'open'.

You can now interact with any door via the "door" alias, regardless of whether it has that name or not. For example, "open door east" will open any door to the east, even if it is named "gate", "bush", "hiddenhatch", "deadtrees", etc etc. This works for the following commands: open, close, knock, lock, unlock, pick.

What this means is if you have the search, you can open the door. Search aside, anyone with enough search can type "open door west" and the door will open.

As to your reactive comment, it is exceptionally hard to trust your anecdotal evidence because you are often wrong and continue to press things that are untrue, not only to Staff, but to other players, as if they are validated and true, which means other players default to believing you and not Staff. This causes issues, case in point this thread, when the issue was originally explained to you in August with at least explicit information that the search was higher than 75.

The reason the reimbursement happened had nothing to do with the door, but something within the door that didn't load correctly, which made getting the reward impossible.

As Ely said, given the nature of the reward, it is not too big of an ask to request a high amount of search. Given the general composition of the groups that hit TAR regularly, it feels like a big ask because there is very little diversity in those groups.

In most cases, on Known Bugs--we say something along the lines of "working as intended." And then edit the title of the post to say "Answered." That would have been sufficient in this case, but you've been answered this thoroughly because you've convinced 4 people to send in logs of the encounter, with none of those logs even being the person running the search. That means, to me, at least 4 people believe you more than Staff without ever trying, even 99% search that 100% guaranteed would work to open the door.

Logs were mailed because we thought it was still a bug - and were told to mail logs. You can literally see the discussion in the logs.
Ryoz didn't have logging on. I believe he also told me he attempted both open direction and search direction.
I don't understand the requirement to mail logs by a specific individual - it doesn't show you their search %, and its easy to spoof.

Re discord - I can confirm you did say true to my comment of its at least above 75. Since it was in response to something that I had said offhand it literally didn't occur to me that there was meant to be some specific learning there. I pracd above 75. I prac'd 93 for however long it took to die through an entire reset without triggering. People keep saying the TAR chance is like 3% - I have no idea where they're getting that number, but certainly we have days and weeks where we hit all 4 smobs 3-4 times without a trigger... then we often get ported to the dlord which we can't kill (I've heard of it dying twice since inception, and the moment you flee you get booted).

Re group makeup - sigh. I just spent an hour or so searching for the player numbers info split by time of day - I found it once but can't figure it out right now. My feeling is for about 12-16 hours of the day you're lucky to get more than 5 people grouped - and that is literally only because right now LS tends to have vala maddy roberto and 2-3 others on almost every day, across various alts. Cut out people wanting pk. Cut out the people who hate smobbing. Cut out those who won't group with tower, or conversely consider those who can group with those who won't group with tower. Then apply a low chance of actually triggering an smob, people having their own characters focuses that are something other than smobbing for an activity that again..imms stated was specifically intended to promote group activity and play..

Yes, I could prac 99 search and only smob. So could Maddy, or Vala.

I don't understand the phrase 'the bare minimum search'. This isn't an opportunity where we can take a couple hours and go try search, go prac ome more, go try again etc.

Right now I see conflicting messages, where you say 100% search failed to find the door at a relatively high rate, and where you say 'a minimum search requirement' will open it 100%. Ryoz told me he typed open door west, so that tells me its above 93%, since you've now said that while search can fail open door won't.


Yes, I apologise about the anecdotal evidence, and agree that its not worth much. I don't think you exactly enjoyed being spammed with the email evidence either.. my logs did include searching direction, and opening direction.

The bare minimum search requirement:

If we set a door to 30% search, then 29% search pracced won't open it. 30% pracced will. It is the bare minimum search requirement. Now, most people will have a bit higher due to how pracs work, but the bare minimum search requirement in this case also took 3 tries to open.

As for why logs:

It makes the difference between us having to resort to more polite variations of "git gud, learn2wotmud" or more constructive feedback like "you're typoing that" or "you're on the right track, but...".

Really, you're making this needlessly complicated.
