How can we bring more players to the quieter hours?

Alima didn't say to stay on AFK. She suggested having more things to do when you log on and there's no PK happening or many other logged in. When a who list grows enough, things WILL happen.

Logging on, asking about PK and logging off does not help bring people to the game.

I'm tired of trying to start up pk. It is just annoying when someone makes the effort to go rk/dusty and the other side doesn't bother chasing at least to their friendly zone if they have more :p I wish I was talented like ss players to manage pk anywhere but I am bad!

Removing malk no hide wasn't so great because of gate knocking and having to move ppl to tkd makes no sense either.

Anyway Imms are shrinking the mud so am sure all this will be addressed.

I disagree, people logging on and afking after not finding PK is fine, and in my time zones it's pretty much what you have to do most of the time. Quite often in my time zones I go look around, but nobody is about, so I AFK for a bit until something shows up. There are two problems around that though - 1)some people just log on, afk, ask about PK, but don't even bother trying to find PK. If you find that on two separate sides, nobody is going to link up and
2)People log on, afk to PK, PK turns up and they run out to participate but basically don't chase/keep PK going, but ruin the PK by unbalancing it, then run off to AFK again, so the people not-AFK rinse and repeat the attempts to have PK, ruined by the people who are just jumping in and out of AFK when they feel like the PK is in the right situation for them. To an extent you also get this with support channies joining in on PK in entirely safe locations but refusing to chase, leaving everyone in limbo.

To an extent there are times when 2) is unavoidable. You log on, try and find PK, nothing there, you AFK, PK turns up but after 5-10 minutes you're just out of time. It's the problem with the people who turn up to PK dust/inside FD/in Blight that then don't do anything to keep PK going that are the issue. Ultimately there are a limited number of people who I would actually suggest go out of there way to start pk, and far more who are willing to jump in but not keep it going.

I'm going to respond to this, although I'm not sure if you're refering to my post or not since I didnt really say this.

When someone logs on, they can't tell who is afk and who isn't. They just see people on and the potential for some interesting gameplay. This IS a good thing as it entices people to stay on.

However, I'll just reiterate my point that we need to focus on activities for people to do when there is no pk. Things for people to stay logged on and do.

I feel like you didn't really think this post through and now Petra and Alima are making more sense than you. I can't believe you've done this.

I second what Alima mentioned about things to do when there is no pk. I personally enjoy doing quests and I think they were a great addition. I think more pre-made quests would be an avenue to keep peoples interests when the mud is dead.

I don't mind people sitting afk and waiting on pk so much as people who sit and mostly alt-tab and are semi afk watching pk waiting for the safest/"right" time to join, then pk for 5-10 and rinse/repeat. Weir comes to mind, since he got swarmed fdrd a while ago for a unique and got upset on forums and one line from one of the posts was "Use some moderation" and we all laughed and it became a phrase for a bit, but it's right in some senses. I afk or alt-tab and watch pk across alts all the time, usually waiting for my side to be losing so I can go pk without ruining it. Everyone will gauge things differently though and trying to make everyone be a "fun pker" who takes risks and encourages fun pk just won't do any good. Dooring them when they think theyre vulturing someone/entering safe pk is pretty satisfying, though :)

I generally always go try and make pk across alts if I log on and don't see anything. I understand its frustrating sitting 1w gk while 4 trolls hide inside, Isabel, or having some remort and a couple trolls chase you blight and just sit at a patty...and Ive def bitched my fair share over it, but the best answer really is to just accept that people play for different reasons and some people just will always play like that. Learn to recognize that Spyder isn't going to pk unless its 10:1 and next time, dont bother trying for so long - give them the option to pk, sit around for a bit, then go rent or do something else. Players can and should do a better job of policing their own, also, and condemning the people who make a habit of vulturing dusty and then just sitting back in fd while everyone else chases. Similarly, players should be rewarded and encouraged for actively starting pk - all pk-based clans really should have this as a hard requisite and turn away anyone who just sits in a city waiting for everyone else to do the work. Its sad when you think about the number of people you regularly see actually trying to start pk vs the number of people you regularly see involved in pk; there really are only a handful of the former.

And there is a large amount of stuff to do in the game for solo people, small numbers, and groups. Not all of it is as handheld as sitting in clanrooms and saying issue quest - go out and explore, do mini-chains, hit soloable smobs, do any number of the standalone quests in the game, run a circuit of dynamic events, do gold runs, do vial runs, craft stuff...the options for solo or low numbers are too many to list. I'd wager most of the people asking for more probably haven't done most of what already exists, but maybe I'm way off the mark there. In the end, this is a multiplayer game so the rewards for things that take 6 people to do them likely always should be more than stuff that takes 1 person who just sits around farming it :p

More common knowledge of these types of activities and less FOFY mentality can go a long ways to helping others maintain more interest in staying online with goals and such to accomplish.

Anyone with the knowledge that wants to share with the community should add these types of information to the Wiki. If you don't feel like you have the skill set or the know how to contribute that is ok, just add what you can.

We should soon have a forum setup over at wotmudarchives for all things pertaining to the Wiki to help facilitate adding content. Anyone with questions about the Wiki or the process of adding content feel free to mail me and if I can't help I can try and direct you to who or what can.

Cheers!

Re Lykan: I do agree that there is a lot of stuff to do....if you're on LS. SS and DS have virtually nothing beyond PK and smob. Clans do have some quests but I would love to see some immersive quests for everyone that delves deeper into the history and RP of the side, particularly SS where the RP has such rich potential.
