An Aes Sedai Finds a Girl Who Can Learn to Channel

Etain performs an Aes Sedai's Age-old duty of finding girls in the world with the Spark and convince them to join the White Tower as a Novice. She found Amilesa in her home-town of the Two Rivers and with such close proximitry could tell that she could be Taught how to Channel. Being put through the tried and true Rosebud Exercise, Amilesa realizes that there is something inside her calling out to be explored and understood. She agrees

The Winespring Inn
The Winespring Inn is famed throughout the Two Rivers. Owned by the Mayor
of Emond's Field, Bran Al'Vere, the inn is the center of town activities.
While the common room isn't the bustling type, one can always find welcome
here and a warm mug by the hearth. There is a sign over the bar.

Etain has arrived from the south.

Amilesa brushes away some stray hair left by the cat rubbing against her.

Amilesa attempts to shoo the cat away, to no avail.

Etain brushes back her travelling coat as she looks about the room.

Amilesa brushes at her leg some more at the persistently clinging cat hair.

Etain beams a smile at Bran al'Vere.

Amilesa notices the crowded inn filling up with a finely dressed woman.

Etain says 'Good day to all, and may the Light shine on this inn.'

Etain looks at Amilesa.

Etain narrows her eyes.

Amilesa smiles warmly at the finely dressed woman from her bench at the wooden table.

Etain smiles at Amilesa.

Amilesa glances at the innkeeper, wondering if he knows the stranger to town.

Amilesa says 'Good day! My name is Amilesa. You are, Lady...?'

Etain says 'Good day, Amilesa. I am Etain do Arman a'Conn, late of Tar Valon and on my way home.'

Amilesa's eyes widen at the mention of the Ivory City on the Island.

Amilesa says 'Tar Valon, Lady Etain? I've heard so many stories!'

Etain smiles.

Amilesa says 'Is it true, there are hundreds of Towers with bridges crossing them all?'

Etain says 'Stories of the Shining Walls abound. Not all are true, but it is a wondrous place.'

Etain says 'And, while there may not be hundreds, I can confirm for you that there are many towers, many connected by bridges in the air.'

Etain says 'None compare to the White Tower itself, however.'

Amilesa says 'I can imagine. Pristine white walls that never get dirty. Roads that aren't more mud than stone.'

Amilesa grimaces as she notices the looks from her fellow villagers.

Etain says 'People of every land visit the city, bringing their traditions and produce with them. It can be quite overwhelming, at times.'

Amilesa places both her elbows on the table and rests her chin on them wristfully.

Etain considers for a long moment.

Amilesa says 'Speaking of, we don't get many villagers through here that aren't from the Two Rivers. WHat brings you around? Passing through on the way home?'

Etain nods at Amilesa.

Amilesa whistles in appreciation.

Etain says 'I have had business, here in the south, but now I am on my way back to Tar Valon.'

Amilesa says 'Must have been quite a trek, for THIS to be your mid-point.'

Etain smiles.

Etain says 'An Aes Sedai goes wherever she is needed.'

Amilesa blinks a few times, her jaw dropping.

Amilesa says 'YOU ARE AN AES SEDAI?!'

Amilesa glances around herself, abashed.

Amilesa says again, more queitly 'You're an Aes Sedai?'

Etain smiles at Amilesa.

Etain says 'I am indeed, Etain a'Conn Aes Sedai at your service.'

Amilesa gives Etain a long look from head to toe, taking in her appearance.

Amilesa says 'Oh Light! I mean, I thought you were nobility for sure, but I didn't guess an Aes Sedai would find her way here.'

Amilesa leans across the table closer to the Aes Sedai.

Amilesa says 'We aren't in trouble, are we?'

Etain shakes her head solemnly.

Amilesa glances around for any who fit the descriptions of Warders.

Etain says 'No indeed. I can assure you that my presence is no harbinger. In fact, I have been here before, and the Winespring Inn is my favorite place to stay in these parts.'

Amilesa says 'I have noticed that some women in finer clothes than we wear sometimes visit our deft herbalist. I figured you for one of them.'

A black cat has arrived from above.

Amilesa pats a black cat on its head.

Etain laughs lightly.

Etain says 'Ah, yes, your herbalist is most excellent. I have often come here to study her ways. Herbs happen to be a study of mine.'

Amilesa smiles brightly.

Amilesa says 'What a coincidence, I have been taught which ones to look out for, both to avoid, and which to give to our Wisdom.'

Amilesa places a bundle of herbs on the table.

Etain nods in agreement.

Amilesa says 'Feel free to help yourself, I gather them up more out of habit than anything else.'

Amilesa says 'And then I can say I gave herbs to an Aes Sedai!'

Etain says 'Excellent, these are all good herbs. I thank you much.'

Etain smiles.

Etain gets a blue pouch of flatwort tea.
Etain gets a tincture of a thick yellow liquid.
Etain gets a gray fennel plant.
Etain gets a black belladonna berry.
Etain gets a section of red and yellow sunburst root.

Etain ponders again for a moment.

Etain says 'May I make an observation?'

Amilesa dusts out her now empty herb bag, dust emptying it in heavy plumes.

Amilesa looks up with a questioning look on her face.

Amilesa says 'Oh, of course! What is it?'

Etain says 'I do not mean to alarm you, but this close, I can sense...a presence in you.'

A black cat has arrived from the east.

Amilesa furrows her brow in obvious confusion.

Amilesa says 'What do you mean, a presence?'

Amilesa twists about herself on the bench, trying to see all about herself.

Etain says 'It is possible, for women like myself who can channel the One Power, to feel a kinship with those who also possess the ability.'

Amilesa blinks.

Etain says 'From a short distance, we can sense the connection to the Power in other women, and I feel it in you.'

Amilesa says 'Surely I would know if something like that were inside me? I feel normal!'

Etain says 'Not necessarily. Some young women can be taught to touch their ability. Others will learn how on their own. Either way, until it is used, the ability is very small, not even noticeable unless you know what to look for.'

Amilesa purses her lips in thought, her eyes not leaving the Aes Sedai.

Etain says 'Tell me, have you ever noticed strange occurrences? Perhaps you wished for something to happen, and it suddenly did?'

Amilesa shakes her head.

Amilesa says 'No...I don't think so.'

Etain nods slowly.

Etain says 'Have you ever been ill suddenly, and then just as suddenly been well, with no explanation?'

Amilesa pauses in thought, then shakes her head once more.

Etain nods, more firmly this time.

Amilesa says 'No...I didn't even get the sickness that was going around last winter.'

Etain says 'I believe that you can be taught to touch the True Source and channel the One Power.'

Etain says 'If you are willing, I can give you your first lesson.'

Amilesa raises her eyebrows suddenly, then excitedly nods.

Amilesa says 'I don't see why not, I like learning new things.'

Etain smiles.

Etain says 'Close your eyes, and imagine that you are a rosebud.'

Amilesa glances about the Inn's common room, then closes her eyes as told.

Amilesa's eyelids tighten in concentration.

Etain says 'You are a rosebud, under the warm sun. Feel the warmth, and open to it. Be the rosebud, blooming under the sun's warm rays. Accept its warmth, and let yourself open.'

Amilesa nods her head slowly along with Etain's rhythmic instructions.

Amilesa bites her lips gently.

Amilesa feels the flows of saidar coursing through her body.

Etain smiles.

Etain says 'And there it is. You have touched the True Source for the first time.'

Amilesa furrows her brow further at the new sensations.

Amilesa opens her eyes at the sound of Etain's voice.

Amilesa says 'Is that what that was. It seemed so...natural?'

Etain nods in agreement.

Amilesa looks over her shoulder as if expecting to see something there.

Etain says 'It is. For us, we embrace the Source, and allow it work through us. Being able to surrender ourselves to the Power is crucial.'

Amilesa senses Etain connecting to the True Source.

Amilesa senses Etain is channeling saidar.

Etain weaves her hands, creating a hearty meal in the process.

Etain eats a strange fruit.

Amilesa says 'So...how do I use this? Maybe it can help me with my chores around town!'

Etain tugs thoughtfully on a loose strand of flame-red hair.

Etain smiles wryly.

Etain says 'Oh, it can do so much more than that. Learning to use the One Power is difficult, and often dangerous.'

Etain says 'I know of nowhere that you would be better able to learn than in Tar Valon itself.'

Amilesa grimaces at the word dangerous.

Amilesa says 'Tar Valon? But that is so far away! Devon's Ride is the furthest I've ever traveled.'

Etain says 'It is a long way. I made the journey myself, as a young girl long ago.'

Amilesa says 'When would this training start?'

Etain says 'As soon as you arrive. Once there, you would be entered in the books as a novice of the White Tower.'

Amilesa nods along.

Etain says 'I must warn you, the training is not for the fainthearted. As I said, it is difficult, and it can be dangerous to the careless.'

Etain says 'For those willing to work and persevere, though, the rewards are enormous. The ability to use the Power at will, and even someday to wear the shawl as Aes Sedai.'

Etain says 'You should know, though, that there are certain requirements.'

Amilesa mulls over what was said in silence.

A bartender tells Amilesa 'Enjoy it!'
Amilesa now has a cup.

Amilesa drinks the hot, bitter tea.

Etain says 'You must be willing to remain in Tar Valon until the Tower judges that you are ready to leave it. For novices, that means that you will not be allowed to leave the island itself.'

Amilesa says 'I see...but since I've never been there, I imagine I would still have plenty to see.'

Etain says 'By studying, and earning the trust of your teachers, you can be raised to Accepted, at which time you will be allowed to travel the world again, although still with certain boundaries.'

Amilesa says ruefully 'Not that I have taken advantage of world travelling thus far, anyway.'

Amilesa says 'So, there are a lot of rules and it is diffucult. Besides living in the splendor of Tar Valon, why should I leave my village?'

Etain says 'Each woman has her own reasons for pursuing the path of Aes Sedai. Some seek to join the fight against the Shadow, others to bring justice to the world, still others to seek knowledge.'

Etain says 'For myself, I hope to use my Talents to make the world a better place for those without power or prestige.'

Etain says 'The Tower's training allows us to find the ways in which we can best serve, and there are many ways to do so.'

Amilesa says 'What sort of things can I do with these abilities? I've heard all sorts of stories.'

Amilesa says 'Would I be able to figure out how to do that myself? I thought I saw what you were doing when you made the fruit appear earlier.'

Etain says 'I'll use myself as an example. My Talent is called Healing. I can use the One Power to eradicate disease from the body, and to cause flesh and bone to knit themselves together after injury.'

Amilesa bobbs her head to each side, seeing the value in that.

Etain says 'And yes, it is possible to learn weaves by seeing them performed. It gets easier as you learn how to channel, but you must never push yourself past the limits of your strength. It can result in death, or in losing the ability to channel forever.'

Amilesa's lips turn down in a frown.

A bartender tells Amilesa 'Enjoy it!'
Amilesa now has a choice steak.

Amilesa eats the steak.

Etain says 'So. May I ask, what are your thoughts?'

Amilesa says 'I am scared of leaving my home. My family.'

Amilesa says 'But I...now that I have felt it, I need to learn more.'

Etain nods at Amilesa.

Etain says 'It is an enormous step, but I can assure you that it is one well worth taking.'

Etain says 'The choice is yours. I will not force you, although some might, to be honest.'

Etain smiles at Amilesa.

Amilesa says 'I think it is best to go to Tar Valon, Aes Sedai.'

Etain nods.

Etain says 'Indeed. I cannot promise that, in years to come, you will not regret this choice. What I can promise you is that, even if you do not become Aes Sedai, you will understand the value of your choice, and it is a valuable one.'

Amilesa says 'I'm most interested in learning how to use my abilities.'

Etain nods at Amilesa.

Etain says 'Then follow me, and begin your journey.'

Etain beckons Amilesa to follow her.

Amilesa says 'Of course. Let me go pack up my things!'

Amilesa rushes back into the inn carrying a couple duffle-bags and a backpack.

Amilesa now follows Etain.

Etain smiles at Amilesa.

Amilesa is now a member of Etain's group.

The travel through Altara where Amilesa sees Etain in action using the One Power to aid their travels. The horses lasted longer, their supplies we provided for, and far quicker than she had ever heard of before, they were in Caemlyn.

A Wide Boulevard
Amilesa is on a wide boulevard that stretches all the way across Caemlyn. The
extremely wide road is cut in the middle by a strip of grass with trees evenly
placed along the street. You see people scurrying about in a mad rush. A
stairway leads up here onto a skywalk that runs over the entire Inner City.

Etain says 'Welcome to Caemlyn, one of the greatest cities in the world.'

Etain leaves up riding a warhorse.

Skywalk over the Inner City
Amilesa is at the southern end of a long marble skywalk that runs over the
Inner City of Caemlyn. A spiraling stairwell leads down into the heart of
the Outer City. You can see a great deal of Caemlyn from this vantage
point, and the view is simply spectacular. The number of people that
populate this huge city is beyond all belief. The walkway continues to the
north.

Amilesa says 'It's so big! Exactly what I thought a city would look like, but bigger!'

Etain says 'Unfortunately, we won't be able to stay today, but someday I would be pleased to show you the sights.'

The pair make the final leg of the journey and Amilesa is finally delivered to the White Tower of Tar Valon. After Etain's long journey of unspecified mission, of which Amilesa's discovery and recruitment was but a footnote, the Aes Sedai hands her off to a Sister of the Yellow Ajah, Ashlynn Sedai, and the rest is written in the chronicles of the White Tower.
