What makes you play a stabber?
What makes you play a stabber?
I'm curious as to what makes people play rogues/stabbers, since I see so many around, maybe I'm missing out on something! Is it the chance of a quick kill, the easier survivability or what makes you play a rogue? Personally I've never found backstabbing very appealing and think rogues generally lower the fun and quality of PK, but that might be because the aspect I enjoy about PK is the chasing/running. So for those of you who do play rogues, what do you find appealing about them?
Re: What makes you play a stabber?
most people that pk vs me probably understand now, i pk as a melee rogue mostly, i dont go for the flee stabs or anything like that.
but the main reason is, there is no more satisfying feeling than blicking a female channeler.

Re: What makes you play a stabber?
I like killing gleemen.
Re: What makes you play a stabber?
I am also mostly a melee rogue, but I just like doing solo pk and such.
Re: What makes you play a stabber?
Main reason is how damn sweet the *guyistabbed* is dead! message. Never gets old.
It is not the quick, or easy kill, so much as the thrill of taking someone out. Of taking advantage, of skulking around and waiting for the right time and once you are revealed seeing how you can turn things to your advantage to get another shot. Picking a target, looking for the weak link in a group fight, balancing getting stuck in with melee with suddenly switching to try a stab and maybe turning a fight.
Pk would be dreadfully boring to me if every fight was a bunch of people trying to bash each other. But there can definitely be too many rogues in certain types of pk. Rogues are not the only group that applies to though, eg channies, chargers, fades.
Obviously some situations you get a bigger thrill than others. A experienced player is probably not going to get much joy stabbing a semi afk exper (unless they have issues), but under the right conditions when you feel you've earnt the kill and pulled off the big stab there is nothing else like it. Probably just like when you land that clutch bash at crit vs crit that gets the kill, stabbing people dead just gives me all the feels!
Not the survivability, for me. If you refuse to melee or engage much I suppose you survive more, but never really crosses my mind that I am actively selecting to play a class that has less chance of dying. Stabbers probably survive more because there is less often any point staying in when low because you are just going to get bashed and die. A basher can stay in low and land bashes, we have no defense against that besides leaving the room.
Sometimes it does not make sense to just stand in melee and get thumped, but I get that when viewed from the other side that can come across as annoying and frustrating behaviour.
And I like risky stabs too, like stabbing a channie in a room full of humans!
Despite all the drawbacks, the hate! (which I don't take too seriously, bring it on) and the pretty crap pk that you sometimes get when you come against certain opponents (because your two styles just clash so badly), I always have and I expect always will get the most joy from skulking around and trying to land stabs on people.
Melee rogue can be a touch boring, but improves significantly when you master as your damage output goes up. If you don't bring the melee as part of your game you're going to be frequently ineffective and very annoying.
Outside of pk stabber is great for people who like hanging on their own and stabbing mobs/smobs and just running about getting lost in a world away from real life. Often I'd rather be doing my own thing than be in a group and solo rogue gives me plenty of options for things to do and I feel gives me maximum immersion in the mud.
Maybe above all, It is a mindset. And it is not for everyone. You like oranges, I like apples.

Re: What makes you play a stabber?
Rogues are just fun!
Being able to smob when no one is around , i find rogues a fantastic way to keep my hunters and warriors fully geared.
When it comes to pk, I like the fact that as a rogue i can sweepingly change the directional flow of pk with a single hit on a channeler or the oppositions leader. I feel that the survivability is like Horror said, kind of a side effect of the class. If a rogue is a in melee they can't win they will not try to win it, pointless waste of hit points without some way to bash an opponent so many rogues just wont stay in the melee. (This does take into account the fact some players regardless of winning or losing a melee just flee because ?? i don't know why!).
When it really comes down to it for me its the versatility a rogue can offer and having a master rogue just amplifies this. Being able to both stab as a rogue and bash with a mob is hilariously OP. Add in the fact you can hunt a lot of alt qps solo as a rogue it means that in the quest for remort, most of the work comes from me alone outside of killing cities and this is great because i always liked being the lone player or part of a 2 man team.
If you enjoy solo play where you don't have to share your loot or accomplishments, or like me you enjoy smobbing gear because you just have to know what the load %'s are then rogues are a fun way to pass the mud downtime.
I mastered years ago now, and i've never regretted doing it as a DS rogue!

Re: What makes you play a stabber?
Always wondered this too. Personally, I enjoy group pk. Don't care much for 1v1s, find them generally incredibly boring with some exceptions.
Tried playing a stabber but found it really boring. I much prefer the dynamics group pk.
Curious to see people's answers. There's a ton of rogues out there.
The different mindset is so interesting. For many of the rogues I see, I would characterize it as not really engaging in pk at all other than trying random stabs far apart in time and hoping for the best. However, some guys like Shinobi do make it look fun at times. Craven used to haunt TV in his rogue days. People that understand all the advantages that DS rogues in particular have and leverage them to make risky exciting PK, that I find fun. Skulking around, not engaging, always being healthy and just rolling the lotto dice on a stab once in a while - I can't figure out why thats fun, but to each his own.

1 v 1 do suck. Please ban 1 v 1. If anyone is worried about 'ganking' me, please do.
Re: What makes you play a stabber?
To me, "sweepingly change the directional flow of pk" actually means "pk is over"
Re: What makes you play a stabber?
I'm traveling around the country at present and the internet I've been using has been terrible. Very frequent 5+ second freezes. If this is the norm for other people then bad internet is a stabbers dream.
