A Darkhounds Chase

Vicious growling, snarling and the occasional howl is suddenly quieted by a loud and bloodthirsty roar! Synthia ran, heartbeat pounding in her head her cries muted by the darkhounds roar. The swamp air was thicker than usual making breathing difficult as she ran as fast as she could dodging moss-covered branches and exposed cypress roots. The pounding of massive paws could be heard over the snapping of branches and crashing trees as the hounds frantically chased their prey.

Breathing heavily and cursing under her breath Synthia knew this bayou like the back of her hand but an increasingly heavy fog was settling in preventing her from recognizing the surrounding area. The dark creatures chasing her were equally slowed by the sudden change in the atmosphere. Whines and angry howls could be heard from somewhere behind her. Resting a hand against an ancient cypress tree she had never seen before she tried to breath without coughing with a metal taste in her mouth.

Spitting unceremoniously in an attempt to wash the taste from her mouth, the hair on the back of her neck stood up as she heard the thrill shriek of a hound pierce the fog laden silence. "They've found my scent!" she thought. With no time to curse her predicament, she chose an uncertain direction and bolted with the last of her strength!

Unable to see through the thick fog as she ran she felt it before she saw it, empty space beneath each foot and gravity pulling her downwards! Screaming she realized she had run straight off an edge and was free falling! Crashing heavily to the ground the fall had to have only been three or four feet but the wind was knocked clear out of her. Gasping for air and stumbling backwards trying to stand she leaned back against the outcropping suppressing tears and trying to breath. The overwhelming scent of sulfur struck her nose and she clasped a hand over her mouth to cover her gasp.

The earthen wall behind her shook as a darkhound took slow steps towards the edge of the ledge sniffing the air. The form of another hound could be seen through the fog only a few yards away. Feet soaked from running through the swampy water and legs drained of all strength Synthia raised her hands and shouted as the hound from above landed in front of her. The hounds howled as the surrounding swamp water appeared to rise from the ground by itself and a wicked wind swooped into the mix lifting the water and giving it momentum! A ten foot wall of water slammed into the darkhounds lifting them from the ground sending them crashing into the trees and moss-covered rocks. The surrounding area was utterly changed as the water fell back to the ground. Trees split in half, large boulders moved from their resting places and snarling hounds slowly standing back up surprised by the sudden attack of the elements. Physically drained Synthia closed her eyes and thought to herself. "I'm going to die. They've finally cornered me." Accepting her fate she relaxed her muscles and opened her piercing hazel eyes and stared straight into the massive black face of an over sized beast created from nightmares. It's teeth spanned the length of her hands and the very earth smoldered where it stood. The darkhound stopped a foot before the dirt covered woman and howled a full throaty howl of victory before snarling wildly and going for the kill.

Synthia's mind reeled and time slowed to a near halt. Inner turmoil, feelings, thoughts and emotions crashed like waves of different colors and temperatures into one another creating a tempest inside her head. Feeling an incredible source of inner strength come from deep within her she released herself to the torrent of chaos. Her very being felt disconnected from reality as a sense of calm overtook her. Staring into the approaching blood stained jaws of the darkhound, Synthia used every bit of will she had and shut her eyes as she ducked from the oncoming onslaught! A weight heavier than anything she had ever felt came upon her and just as suddenly it was gone and so was she!

Stunned to feel hard ground under her she opened her eyes and was greeted with the sight of rolling hills spotted with trees and a clear blue sky. A large city split in two by a river could be seen out in the distance. Dirty, wet and exhausted Synthia couldn't understand what had happened or where she was but she embraced the darkness that overtook her and passed out.

A pigeon cocked its head to the side after seeing the most amazing thing he'd ever seen in his life unfold right in front of him. One minute there was nothing but the wind rustling the grass and the next a woman appeared from seemingly no where! Incapable of containing his excitement he bobbed once, twice, three times! The pigeon knew what it had to do. Swooping down from its perch the pigeon settled on the unconscious woman's hand and knew it was never going to leave her side.
