The Northern Gate of Mayene
The massive north gate is heavily guarded. Tall iron portcullises protect
the city from attack, and small murder holes above the gate are barely
visible. A small alley leads off to the west, and looks to lead to seedier
parts of town. Tall towers dominate the view of the city to the south. The
stone road here is worn smooth.

Crenna says 'I didn't want to interrupt your thoughts.'

Aldwyn says 'What thoughts come these days anyway'

Aldwyn shakes his head.

Aldwyn says 'How are you adjusting to your new duties?'

Crenna says 'I've gotten a list of my tasks and it's quite an impressive and extensive list.'

Crenna says 'These will keep me busy for some time, I suspect.'

Crenna says 'More than that though, it is nice seeing the care shown towards others that can be seen by some of these tasks.'

Crenna says 'Along with admiration for the Lady First.'

Aldwyn smiles happily.

Crenna says 'I am also honoured to be given the responsibility of negotiating trade agreements'

Aldwyn says 'Indeed. She is quite the amazing woman.'

Crenna smiles slightly.

Aldwyn says 'Yes, it is quite the task.'

Aldwyn says 'The Seafolk are tough negotiators as well.'

Crenna says 'I wonder...'

Crenna says 'I would always operate under the premise that my work is confidential...but I don't suppose I could mention to my parents...'

Crenna says 'Well with the Feast of Lights celebration in Cairhien soon, I thought to visit the country estates.'

Crenna says 'My parents will of course want an update and will want to be reassured that my actions have value and reflect well on my family.'

The sun slowly sinks behind the majestic towers of Mayene.

Aldwyn ponders life, the universe, and everything.

Aldwyn says 'There's nothing to stop you from contacting them...'

Crenna says 'I don't suppose, I could mention, along with my promotion of course, that I have been entrusted with arranging trade agreements?'

The night has begun.

Crenna says 'That would be quite meaningful to them. Perhaps if I didn't give any details, it would be okay?'

Aldwyn says 'Might I suggest you try to complete the trade agreements before the Festival?'

Crenna says 'Of course.'

Crenna says 'Confidentiality is important and so that was my first concern.'

Aldwyn says 'Surely that would be even more meaningful to them to see that you succeeded in negotiating such agreements?'

Crenna says 'Of course.'

Crenna says 'I will try, but such negotiations of course may take longer than I have.'

Aldwyn says 'We have no need to hide our dealings with the Sea Folk. Unless you're planning to talk to a Tairen about it...'

Crenna says 'No, never that.'

Aldwyn eyes you closely, seeming to pierce through you with his gaze.

Aldwyn smirks.

Aldwyn says 'Of course not'

Crenna says 'My mother is from Mayene and my father from Cairhien.'

Aldwyn says 'You're father got the better part of that deal...'

Aldwyn smirks.

Crenna says 'Our family would not lower themselves to conduct business with Tairens. '

Aldwyn says 'Mayener women are...unique creatures to put it mildly.'

Aldwyn nods at Crenna.

Crenna says 'You are speaking to one.'

Crenna grins.

Crenna says 'I mean, it's only the last couple of years I was at the Cairhien country estate.'

Aldwyn says 'I'm aware. And I meant no disrespect to you or your family.'

Crenna says 'None taken.'

Aldwyn says 'If you recall...I found myself in Mayene because of a Mayener girl.'

Aldwyn smirks.

Crenna says 'Indeed.'

Crenna says 'I cannot imagine all you've experienced.'

Aldwyn says 'But yes you can tell them as much as you wish. Although you might refrain from the details of the agreement as you never know what will be of use to someone in Cairhien's Great Game'

Crenna says 'They need not know anything beyond knowing that I will not marry for political reasons.'

Aldwyn nods and looks up to the sky wistfully.

Crenna says 'I honour them and of course believe in duty, but I can raise our status through hard work and working up the ranks.'

Aldwyn says 'I've seen a lot. I've loved. I've drank. I've made and lost fortunes. I've swindled myself out of bad situations and into as many.'

Aldwyn nods at Crenna.

Aldwyn says 'I am sure they will be quite proud of you.'

Crenna smiles happily.

Crenna says 'That is a kind of you to say.'

Crenna says 'As for you, I hope the net value of your experiences was positive. That you've had more happiness than loss.'

The sun crests over the towers of Mayene, flooding the city with light.

Crenna says 'I have not known extremes as you have, I think.'

Aldwyn says 'I have lived a life with very few regrets, and if I were die tomorrow I could still say that I lived a full life.'

Aldwyn says 'Which is more than most my age could claim I think.'

Aldwyn shrugs helplessly.

Crenna says 'There isn't much more than that.'

Aldwyn says 'And if you believe Santino's drunken prattle then I've made at least some difference as well.'

Crenna chuckles politely.

Aldwyn reaches out and touches the stonework around the gate.

Crenna says 'I've found, in experience, that such drink tends to bring our honesty more than lies.'

Crenna says 'Not that I drink to excess. I of course mean in others.'

Crenna stops using a full metal helmet and visor.

Aldwyn says 'You don't date your chairs?'

Aldwyn smirks.

Crenna says 'I don't understand. Chairs?'

Aldwyn says 'My apologies it must have been Caia that was there that night.'

Crenna says 'I would guess so.'

Aldwyn says 'A young Theq got so drunk he was speaking words of love to his seat'

Crenna says 'I can't imagine.'

Crenna says 'It's not.. proper.'

Crenna says 'I mean...'

Crenna says 'Well it's not my place.'

Aldwyn says 'It's ok'

Aldwyn says 'It truly is not proper.'

Crenna says 'I was raised differently, with different goals.'

Aldwyn says 'But propriety has little to do with soldiers when they're drinking'

Crenna says 'I will need to adjust then perhaps.'

Crenna says 'My time in Cairhien, affected me deeply.'

Aldwyn says 'Spend a tavern trip or two with some of the others and you'll see a whole new side.'

Aldwyn says 'I do recommend it though. As among soldiers it's a time of bonding.'

Aldwyn says 'Celebrating each others lives and successes and failures, because you never know what the next day holds.'

Crenna looks doubtful.

Crenna says 'But at what cost? Once one's reputation is tarnished, it can be hard to come back from.'

Crenna coughs.

Crenna says 'I'm sorry... I.'

Aldwyn says 'I understand that all to well, but what happens in the taverns matters little and can add levity to the battlefield'

Aldwyn says 'Lest the soldiers forget what they're fighting to protect.'

Crenna stammers, 'My parents are ambitious and I learned from a young age that our actions and appearances at all times matter.'

Aldwyn says 'And they do'

Aldwyn says 'I was never much of a drinker myself. Had spent too many nights stealing from those who were.'

Crenna says 'I can understand that. And of course, with the loosening of tongues and inhibitions, sometimes wars of power can be won without even drawing a weapon.'

Crenna falls silent, considering.

Aldwyn says 'But sometimes you drink with the others to keep the appearance and help them feel you are one of them instead of standing apart.'

Crenna says 'Yes, but I wouldn't want to be or feel false.'

Aldwyn says 'And that is admirable, and will be accepted just as the other.'

Aldwyn says 'At least until you face a true danger with a group of your brothers and sisters...that's when most crack and give in to the moment.'

Crenna says 'Yes.'

Crenna says 'That I've experienced. Fighting so hard with all my being that it's hard to stop afterwards.'

Aldwyn says 'Myself...I have to be adaptable and blend into any environment which means not drawing attention.'

Aldwyn nods at Crenna.

Crenna says 'The moment where your life and the lives of those you are about are on the line... where everyone is injured and it becomes a matter of will.'

Crenna nods in agreement.

Aldwyn says 'Or sometimes in places such as Cairhien or Tar Valon...it means drawing attention'

Aldwyn winks suggestively at Crenna.

Crenna says 'So very true.'

Crenna says 'Have you ever attended the Feast of Lights? '

Aldwyn says 'Once'

Aldwyn says 'Though it was a differenet view from where I was'

Aldwyn says 'I had to break into the Chapter House during the Festival once.'

Crenna says 'I was going to say, the disguises and break from protocol can be very freeing...but you broke into the Chapter House?!'

Aldwyn grins evilly.

Aldwyn says 'I was under orders and on a very time sensitive mission.'

Aldwyn says 'A girl's life was at stake'

Crenna says 'Oh really?'

Crenna says 'Is that all you're going to tell me?'

Aldwyn nods in agreement.

Aldwyn says 'I can't say much more than that really...'

Crenna says 'Very well. Perhaps it wasn't as exciting as it sounded.'

Crenna chuckles politely.

Aldwyn says 'Other than I've never had a woman take so much to woo to my point of view as that Illuminator...'

Crenna looks at you closely.

Aldwyn winks suggestively at Crenna.

Crenna laughs.

Aldwyn says 'She was downright mean...threatening to burn me with these strange sticks she carried...'

Aldwyn says 'ALthough I suppose I was an uninvited and unwelcome guest...'

Aldwyn says 'It all worked out'

Crenna says 'My own imagination will have to suffice.'

Crenna grins.

Aldwyn says 'I suppose so. I made a promise to that woman never to speak of the things I saw. And a promise to a beautiful woman is a sacred thing'

Crenna says 'Any promise is a sacred thing!'

Crenna chuckles politely.

Aldwyn grins evilly.

Crenna says 'Although I suppose my promise of loyalty to Berelain means more to you considering she is a beautiful woman?'

Aldwyn says 'What that promise means to you matters more than what it means to anyone else'

Aldwyn says 'And what I should have said...is a promise to a beautiful woman who terrifies me the way that one did...'

Crenna says 'You terrified? I take it she was from Mayene.'

Aldwyn says 'You know I hadn't the nerve to ask.'

Aldwyn says 'All I can say is that woman liked her fire'

Crenna says 'I am pleased to have been surprised by your openness and lack of...well the kind of distance I had expected in a high ranking official.'

Aldwyn chuckles politely.

Aldwyn says 'and how was I supposed to be?'

Aldwyn says 'Telling you to polish your boots?'

Crenna says 'Based on my preconceptions and a few years of living in Cairhien?'

Crenna says 'Well really just reserved. Private.'

Crenna says 'Only sharing information if you will gain advantage.'

Crenna says 'Being friendly for political advantage and not...warmth.'

Crenna says 'Warmth.'

Crenna coughs loudly.

Crenna says 'That has a meaning I didn't intend.'

Crenna chuckles politely.

Aldwyn smirks.

Aldwyn nods in agreement.

Crenna corrects herself, 'I meant warmth of heart.'

Aldwyn says 'I understand what you're saying.'

Crenna says 'I still of course feel the need to be stiflingly formal in some cases of course.'

Crenna says 'Well I suppose we come full circle actually.'

Aldwyn says 'And I'm glad you feel that way, so I won't deny there are things I keep reserved from almost all.'

Crenna nods in agreement.

Aldwyn says 'There are things I do for Mayene...that only Lady Berelain and a couple others know of'

Crenna says 'I don't have the clearance to know even a fraction of what most of you do and so I wouldn't expect otherwise.'

A drunken fool has arrived from the south.

Crenna says 'However, I've realized something just now.'

Aldwyn says 'Oh?'

Crenna says 'I grew up in an environment heavy in strict protocol... so for me to relax, well talking with you as we have been, sober, is enough of a change.'

Crenna says 'Perhaps for others who are accustomed to less protocol and stiffness in their day to day lives...'

Crenna says 'For them to relax they need to go a degree lower and so drink to help relax.'

Crenna says 'The main thing that changes is just where we started from, perhaps?'

Crenna shrugs.

Crenna says 'Perhaps it is late and my mind is making up connections.'

Crenna smiles happily.

Aldwyn says 'Perhaps. Although I didn't come from the same sort of protocols you did, my life as a street urchin required a strict and disciplined lifestyle'

Aldwyn says 'So perhaps that's why I don't feel the need to drink to relax either'

Aldwyn says 'Although, I still feel you'll join the men and women one day. It happened to me after all'

Crenna says 'Interesting.'

Crenna says 'Well I'm certainly open to trying new things.'

Crenna says 'Especially if someone I trust has my back.'

Crenna smiles.

Aldwyn says 'And perhaps that is it. When you come through a harrowing ordeal with brothers and sisters at arms. You can't help but trust them afterwards.'

Crenna says 'Well.'

Crenna says 'Speaking freely.'

Crenna pauses.

Aldwyn nods for you to continue.

Crenna says 'I could not trust myself to drink, perhaps to excess, to the point of having less control...with someone who also drinks to excess and talks to chairs.'

Aldwyn chuckles politely.

Aldwyn says 'Indeed'

Crenna says 'Trusting my life with one who is sober is different than with one who is not.'

Crenna says 'Circumstances dictate the level of trust in this case.'

Aldwyn says 'It will change one day, I promise. I trusted nobody when I first came here. Now I trust any one of the Guard would throw down their life for me'

Aldwyn says 'Not that I'd ever ask them to'

Crenna says 'Oh I already trust in that.'

Aldwyn says 'Santino and I have gotten into many a scrapes because of neither of us being willing to leave the other'

Aldwyn chuckles politely.

Crenna says 'Fighting to the point of being out of control with critical wounds... and they didn't let me down.'

Aldwyn nods a little, "You should go see the Wisdom."

Crenna sways a bit on her feet.

Crenna sighs in annoyance.

Crenna says 'Could I lean on your arm please while we walk there?'

Aldwyn says 'Do you know the way?'

Crenna says 'It's not that, I'm feeling foggy.'

Aldwyn nods in agreement.

Crenna now follows Aldwyn.

Crenna says 'If the wisdom is unavailable, someone should make sure I don't fall asleep for a few hours.'

Crenna says 'Any guard you trust would do.'

Crenna says 'Or even the innkeeper perhaps.'

Reception of the Soaring Hawk Inn
A long hallway leads into dozens of tidy rooms that are constantly cleaned.
A large desk lays against one side of the room, behind which the innkeeper
rents out his rooms to customers. A large fireplace is built into the southern
wall, and warms the room.

A ledger lies on a small stand.

Crenna laughs then winces slightly.

Crenna says 'Thank you.'

Aldwyn says 'Look after, Crenna would you?'

Crenna says 'Madame, I think, I may have suffered a concussion.'

Crenna stops following Aldwyn.

Aldwyn says 'Take care, Crenna. Rest up'

Crenna accepts the Innkeeper's care as she helps her sit in a chair.

Crenna says 'Thank you Aldwyn.'

Crenna waves Aldwyn off while the Innkeeper prattles on about how Crenna must stay awake.

Crenna says 'I know...'

Crenna says 'Perhaps a strong tea?'

Crenna rubs her head.

Crenna rests her chin in one hand, her eyes start to close.

Crenna jumps when the Innkeeper returns with a cup of tea, 'Crenna, dear, you must stay awake!'

Crenna has a look of relief once enough time has passed that the Innkeeper announces she can go to bed.

Crenna nods a thanks, climbs into the bed, and drifts off to sleep.

The innkeeper stores your belongings and helps you into your private chamber.

**Old post of a dream that Crenna had regarding the feast of lights.**

Spoilers: internal RP no one would know anything about and so Crenna will ignore and/or be confused or deny if anyone mentions anything here except of course people she's talked about this with in person.

Of interest I actually had this dream in real life (!) and I just had to make it Crenna's dream as well. So much nicer than other mud dreams I've had which just involve me watching myself sit at the computer, staring at the zmud text. ha

Feast of Lights (Dream)
I just had the most intriguing dream. I was at the Feast of Lights in Cairhien wearing the costume I was just fitted for yesterday, courtesy of my well-meaning parents who are still trying to marry me off to one Lord or another. Feathered mask and flowing skirt, but with my midriff bare -- it's scandalous, or rather would be for any other night of the year. You can see by the rough sketch the dressmaker made. (was a broken link to the dress here). Of course, no one will know it's me as I'll be wearing an elaborate feather mask. http://goo.gl/Ru522k.

So in this dream, I had just finished dancing -- you know, one of the dances where the men form one line and the women form a line and the by the time the song is over you've danced with every man present? It was such great fun, but I needed a break so I weaved my way among the dancing people to pour a drink of spiked plum punch. Hand half-raised to take my second sip, I suddenly felt someone standing intimately close behind me, feeling breath against my neck and a hand hot against the skin of my bare, lower back. Perhaps this was to prevent me from turning around, but regardless the effect of it all had me transfixed. I feel the need to add, that I in no way felt afraid. This is after all the one night a year where any man of any rank or even attachments can kiss any woman.

And then, what seemed an eternity later as the passage of time had seemingly stopped, I heard a laughing, quiet murmur in my ear saying something like, 'So I told you it wouldn't be long before you started drinking.' And then like being submerged in cool water, the warmth, the breath, and the presence was gone. I quickly turned around, but in a ballroom full of people dancing in masks, I couldn't tell who or where the person was...and then I awoke.

It was quite the dream to say the least and I can't help but wonder what else that night might have held if I hadn't woken up! I realized from that dream that I've changed since the last Feast. The past few months, joining the Winged Guards and the people I've met, has expanded my thinking, perhaps even my values and goals. I don't know the words to express what I'm feeling now as I write this. There's excitement of course, but something else. Have you ever stood at the edge of a ledge, got too close, and part of you was afraid of falling whereas part of you... wanted a release of sorts... I don't mean death of course! But of releasing constraints, letting go of control, and tasting freedom? Once such freedom is tasted, can one return to a life of protocol and constraint? Maybe I'll ask my buddy J. to go to the Feast of Lights with me as a chaperon.

Oh no, a dreadful thought. My parents in their desire to see me well married, wouldn't have agreed to pay for my costume (picking the dressmaker themselves) so as to tell their handpicked Lord suitors what I would be wearing? That would be a betrayal of the Feast as it depends on anonymity!

Log of Crenna telling Aldwyn about her Dream of the Festival of Lights

Crenna says 'I had the most interesting dream last night, Aldwyn.'

Crenna says 'Well, I'm sure the dream was sparked in part by our conversation and also because I had the final fitting for my costume for the Feast of Lights yesterday.'

Crenna says 'In the dream, I was at the festival and had just finished dancing a line dance.'

Crenna says 'You know the kind where the women line up in one line, the men in another and by the end of the dance every man has danced with every woman?'

Crenna says 'That was fun.'

Crenna smiles happily.

Crenna says 'Anyway...'

Aldwyn nods slowly, squinting slightly in curiosity.

Aldwyn nods in agreement.

Crenna says 'After the dance I needed a break from so much dancing...'

Aldwyn says 'I've been to a few balls and such where they had that sort of dancing.'

Crenna winks suggestively.

Crenna says 'So I weaved my way around dancers to get a drink.'

Crenna says 'And...'

Crenna pauses and looks directly into your eyes.

Crenna says 'Just as I had a sip of a spiked plum punch, I suddenly felt a hand hot against the bare skin of my lower back...'

Crenna says 'And breath warm on my neck.'

Crenna laughs but continues.

Aldwyn shifts a little, but stays silent.

Crenna says 'And then a low chuckling murmur in my ear saying, 'I told you it wouldn't be long before you felt comfortable drinking.''

Crenna says 'And then the warmth, breath, were gone.'

Crenna says 'Up until that point I had been transfixed, but with the contact broken I quickly turned around...'

Crenna says 'But I couldn't tell which person had been behind me as, of course, we were all wearing masks.'

Crenna says 'That is all. '

Crenna says 'I want to say that I trust you to have my back.'

and beaten from years of constant use and abuse. The smell of stout ale

All sorts of ruffians and lowlife visit this establishment, and it seems to
have been the site of several recent fights, judging by the bloodstains on

A large desk lays against one side of the room, behind which the innkeeper

Reception of the Soaring Hawk Inn
A long hallway leads into dozens of tidy rooms that are constantly cleaned.
A large desk lays against one side of the room, behind which the innkeeper
rents out his rooms to customers. A large fireplace is built into the southern
wall, and warms the room.

A ledger lies on a small stand.

Lord Aldwyn Cuebiyar a'Ayende is standing here.
An Elite Winged Guard stands here, defending his country with his life.
A pretty little girl skips merrily along.
A drunken fool staggers in no particular direction.
Joryn Deekin {Winged Guard Applicant} is standing here.
The innkeeper bustles about, helping guests into rooms.
Crenna smiles.

Joryn smiles at Crenna.

Joryn bends over Crenna's fair hand and kisses it gallantly.

Crenna smiles at Joryn.

Crenna says 'It's nice to see you, Joryn.'

Joryn smiles at Crenna.

Crenna says 'I hope you slept well?'

Joryn says 'the best I've slept in a long while I think'

Joryn says 'and yourself?'

Joryn looks at Crenna.

Crenna says 'Yes, I slept well.'

Crenna says 'I don't recall any dreams though from last night.'

Joryn nods in agreement.

Crenna looks slightly disappointed and then smiles.

Crenna says 'Perhaps that is for the best.'

Joryn says 'Perhaps'

Joryn smiles at Crenna.

Joryn says 'I don't recall my dreams, I am not sure if that is a good or bad thing'

Crenna says 'I can't say. I don't normally recall mine either.'

Crenna says 'Well, I ended up not doing as much paperwork as I had hoped to last night. I need to catch up, but you're welcome to sit with me as I do.'

Joryn says 'but, dreams are one thing, being awake is far better I think, I don't think I could imagine anything better than times like this'

Joryn realizes what he just said and blushes.

Joryn nods in agreement.

Crenna smiles happily.

Crenna says 'That's a nice thing to say, Joryn.'

Joryn smiles at Crenna.

Crenna says 'This past week especially as been most remarkable and I have been glad to have shared much of it with you.'

Joryn says 'I feel the same way'

Joryn smiles happily.

Joryn offers you a chair, and sits nearby.

Crenna smiles prettily.

Crenna says 'Thanks, Joryn.'

Joryn blushes, gazing at you a bit long.

Crenna arranges her skirt and places her papers on her lap.

Crenna soon becomes engrossed in her work.

Joryn waits a moment for you to get to your work and takes out the chalk and slate, opening his book once more to copy letters.

Joryn writes carefully, the letters coming easier now.

Joryn practices the alphabet a few times and checks his work, nodding in satisfaction.

Joryn carefully cleans the slate and packs the slate and chalk away with great care.

Joryn flips over a few pages in the book, looking at a list of simple words. He silently sounds them out carefully as he traces a finger under each one.

Joryn smiles to himself, stealing looks at you every now and then, blushing to himself.

Crenna writes in an elegant, flowing hand.

Joryn takes out another book on etiquette, flipping to the pictures to study them carefully.

Joryn looks at his clothing and frowns slightly.

Joryn turns to a chapter on clothing, peering at the finery, his face unreadable.

Joryn closes the book and takes out a small knife to trim loose threads from his clothes, frowning at the patches and stitched up holes.

Joryn quickly glances at you to make sure you're not watching and straightens up in his chair, smoothing out his shirt.

Joryn takes out a book of witty sayings, thumbing through to look for ones he can read, glancing at you as he reads them carefully.

Aldwyn yawns and smiles.

Joryn puts his book away quickly and stands to his feet, adjusting his shabby clothing.

Crenna looks up from her paperwork.

Crenna gathers the papers, stands, and salutes.

Aldwyn says 'Greetings, Crenna.'

Aldwyn says 'Is this our new applicant?'

Crenna looks at Aldwyn.

Crenna says 'Indeed he is, Lord Cuebiyar a'Ayende.'

Aldwyn looks at Joryn.

Joryn says 'hello again'

Crenna steps near Aldwyn and leans in for a second.

Crenna whispers to Aldwyn 'My apology for the formality if it seems stifling, but until I hear you tell him he can call you by Aldwyn, it seems the best approach.'

Aldwyn nods at Crenna.

Crenna steps back.

Crenna flashes Joryn a reassuring smile.

Crenna nods at Joryn in approval.

Crenna smiles.

Aldwyn says 'Sorry, just one moment as I'm trying to recall your application letter.'

Joryn nods in agreement.

Crenna says 'It is nice of you to take this time, Lord Lieutenant.'

Aldwyn says 'I like to take an interest in all who would join our ranks.'

Crenna nods in agreement.

Aldwyn says 'You're a farmer then?'

Aldwyn looks to Joryn.

Aldwyn says 'At least you grew up in the trade, I mean'

Joryn says 'well, I was a farmer, I guess I muck stables for now'

Joryn blushes.

Crenna says 'That is good honest work, Joryn, as I told you yesterday.'

Crenna smiles happily.

Aldwyn says 'A job is a job. At least yours is more honorable then the start I had'

Aldwyn says 'Some of the best people I've known were farmers. Very hard workers.'

Aldwyn says 'Can also be a bit stubborn at times, but that can be an asset as well.'

Joryn nods in agreement.

Aldwyn says 'So you left your farm seeking the glory and battle from the stories?'

Joryn nods, blushing deeply.

Aldwyn smiles happily.

Aldwyn says 'As good a reason as why I left my home I imagine'

Joryn says 'the farm was failing, droughts were bad for several seasons'

Joryn says 'I had little choice, but I only knew what I read in the stories, so... here I am'

Joryn blushes.

Aldwyn nods with a smile, "So here you are."

Joryn nods in agreement.

Joryn grins sheepishly.

Aldwyn says 'Has Lady Balvari spoken to you about the tasks ahead of you yet?'

Joryn says 'A bit yes'

Crenna shoots Aldwyn a slight frown.

Joryn says 'in that she did outline them, but my memory isn't very good'

Joryn blushes.

Aldwyn nods in agreement.

Aldwyn says 'I'm sure Crenna will be a fine teacher to help you through them'

Joryn blushes slightly, limping over to extend his hand to Aldwyn.

Joryn says 'where are my manners, a handshake is the best way to begin a conversation I think'

Aldwyn takes in the limp but doesn't focus on it, reaching out his good hand to shake Joryn's.

Joryn nods in agreement.

Joryn smiles happily.

Aldwyn says 'I don't mean to pry, but can you tell me a bit about how that happened?'

Joryn ponders life, the universe, and everything.

Aldwyn nods towards the limp, trying not to make a big deal of it.

Aldwyn says 'I'm only curious, the Winged Guard has room for all.'

Joryn says 'I don't recall, I'm sure the ox stepped on my leg a time or two while plowing the fields, I've had it so long I don't recall when it started'

Aldwyn nods in agreement.

Aldwyn holds up his left arm, revealing the missing hand, "As I said, we have room for all, it's nothing to worry about."

Crenna looks at her hands, with a slight frown.

Joryn nods in agreement.

Joryn says 'and if I may ask, how did that happen?'

Crenna turns a ring on one of her fingers.

Aldwyn breathes in deeply, "Well...that is a long story. Perhaps another time for that one."

Joryn nods in agreement.

Aldwyn glances at Crenna, "Something the matter?"

Crenna says 'I am sorry, my Lord. '

Crenna whispers to Aldwyn 'It pains me that I have so much and even how my rings could buy him food for a week.'

Aldwyn nods at Crenna.

Aldwyn says 'One moment, I've just remembered something.'

Aldwyn leaves down.

Crenna says softly, 'I'm sorry Joryn. Everything you said was fine.'

Joryn blushes.

Joryn smiles at Crenna.

Joryn says 'I need no apology from you'

Crenna flashes a kind, reassuring smile.

Joryn bows before Crenna.

Crenna says 'It is exciting, isn't it?'

Crenna says 'That you are starting this new adventure in your life.'

Aldwyn has arrived from below.

Aldwyn looks at Joryn.

Joryn nods at Crenna.

Aldwyn nods to himself, he must need reassurance.

Joryn smiles at Crenna.

Joryn turns back to Aldwyn.

Crenna looks at Aldwyn.

Aldwyn says 'I was reminded about a mercenary the Tairens sent recently.'

Aldwyn says 'He was paid rather well for how poor a job he did. Perhaps you could put it to better use.'

Aldwyn gives a soft leather pouch to Joryn.

Joryn starts as his eyes go wide, relief coming over his face briefly before he sets his face a mask once more.

Joryn offers his finest bow, trembling slightly.

Crenna beams a smile at Aldwyn.

Joryn says 'You have my thanks.' in a quiet voice.

Joryn carefully tucks the pouch away deep into his pack.

Aldwyn says 'No trouble at all, as I said was just what the mercenary had on him.'

Joryn puts a soft leather pouch in a backpack.

Aldwyn says 'I figured you could use it to help pay for your rooms. Might make it easier to save what you make at the stables while you're working at the tasks to become a recruit.'

Joryn nods mutely as he straightens.

Joryn says 'my room was my pay for my work in the stables, I think I will continue, the inn's animals and I get along well, I would miss them'

Aldwyn smiles happily.

Aldwyn says 'I understand. Then perhaps it will help you with any pieces of gear you find you might need.'

Aldwyn shrugs helplessly.

Joryn glances at his threadbare clothing for a moment and nods.

Aldwyn says 'It is yours to decide what to do with. Whatever you decide I'm sure it will be a better use than it was before'

Crenna 's eyes shines as she smiles at Aldwyn.

Joryn glances at Crenna and blushes, nodding in agreement.

Joryn says 'I am not sure what I would spend such a fortune on, I don't think I've ever seen that much coin'

Aldwyn says 'Just a hint of what can await you if you do well in the Guard'

Crenna continues to remain respectfully silent.

Aldwyn winks at Joryn.

Crenna looks at Joryn.
A tall, broad shouldered man limps by, his back stooped by a life of hard
labor. He is dirty and his arms are covered in scars. He smiles, a twinkle
in his eye as he reaches a calloused hand out.

Joryn ponders life, the universe, and everything.

Joryn nods in agreement.

Joryn smiles happily.

Joryn says 'then I must do well'

Aldwyn leans in close to Joryn.

Aldwyn whispers something to Joryn.

Crenna averts her gaze.

Aldwyn flicks his eyes towards Crenna.

Joryn glances at Crenna, blushing as he nods.

Joryn coughs, smoothing his shirt, frowning as a stitch comes loose.

Aldwyn says 'There's a tailor on the east side of the city that does good work. Do you know the place?'

Crenna flashes Aldwyn a look and then returns to watching Joryn.

Joryn blushes, nodding as he says quietly, 'They wouldn't let me inside.'.

Crenna rubs her hands down her dress and nods at Joryn.

Aldwyn says 'What?!'

Crenna starts, concern in her eyes.

Joryn says 'I had recently arrived, and was quite... dusty... from the road'

Joryn says 'perhaps they mistook me for a beggar'

Crenna says 'Why didn't you mention this Joryn when I took you to buy this dress yesterday?'

Joryn blushes.

Joryn says 'it... it was my affair'

Crenna says 'Of course. I'm sorry. '

Joryn blushes, nodding.

Aldwyn says 'Well I tell you what. If they turn you away again, let me know.'

Aldwyn says 'That's not the sort of merchants we want in our city'

Crenna nods, darkly.

Joryn says 'it was a most polite kicking out, they didn't get the clubs this time'

Joryn frowns, blushing as he realizes he has said too much.

Aldwyn says 'This time?'

Aldwyn says 'Someone used clubs on you before?'

Joryn glances at his scarred arms, grimacing slightly.

Crenna closes her eyes for a moment.

Joryn says 'it was a long journey here'

Joryn says 'a warm welcome was hard to find, until I met the lady Crenna'

Joryn blushes.

Aldwyn looks to Crenna, then back to Joryn, a fire seeming to light in his eyes for a moment before he closes them and takes a deep breath or three.

Joryn says 'these are dangerous times, I can blame no one for reacting to me as they did'

Aldwyn says 'I am sorry for your troubles till now, Joryn. I assure you that your life is soon to change.'

Crenna nods once, firmly.

Joryn nods silently, looking down for a moment, gazing briefly at his hands.

Joryn stands up straight and nods once more.

Crenna takes a slow breath and waits quietly for Aldwyn to continue.

Aldwyn says 'Do you drink, Joryn?'

Crenna tilts her head, shooting Aldwyn a curious expression.

Joryn says 'I've mostly just had water, ale was a bit too much for my pouch'

Crenna nods, no surprise in her eyes.

Crenna says 'We did share some mulled wine yesterday though.'

Aldwyn says 'I see. Well would you like to adjourn to the Dancing Badger? Drinks are on me tonight as I'd like to get to know you better.'

Crenna says 'As I explained the tasks, my Lord.'

Joryn nods in agreement.

Crenna falls silent.

Aldwyn says 'Unless you two were in the middle of something? I realize I may have interrupted things arriving so suddenly'

Crenna says 'No not at all, my Lord.'

Joryn blushes.

Crenna says 'I was working on some paperwork.'

Crenna says 'Joryn kept me company, being quiet so as not to interrupt my concentration.'

Crenna says 'He was very quiet.'

Joryn picks up his pack, a small stack of books falling out, a basic grammar, a book on etiquette, and one of witty sayings.

Joryn blushes deeply as he quickly puts the books back into his pack, trying to hide them.

An Elite Winged Guard bellows 'The criminal Tarak is at Nearing the North Gate of Mayene.'

Crenna tries to catch Aldwyn's eye and shakes her head slightly.

Aldwyn says 'And he came to us a drunkard and philanderer'

Crenna says 'And I knew it would cause great shame to Joryn if I had stepped in at all.'

Aldwyn steps forward, hesitates just a moment and then places a hand on your arm, "Are you ok, though?"

Crenna says 'It's just... poor Joryn. All he's been through and I convince him this can be a new home.'

Crenna says 'I...'

Aldwyn says 'And it will be.'

Crenna stammers.

Crenna says 'I appreciate your concern.'

Aldwyn says 'Even the best of families have their rough moments.'

Crenna says 'Perhaps.'

Crenna says 'It's just, those in power have a DUTY to ensure those they promote have leadership qualities!'

Aldwyn says 'And although I hope it's not the norm. It was probably good for Joryn to get some of that out I think.'

Aldwyn says 'He strikes me as someone who has bottled it all in and let himself believe he was at fault for it all'

Crenna thinks, nodding slowly.

Crenna says 'Perhaps.'

Crenna says 'But..I think you don't understand my concern.'

Crenna says 'My concern isn't with Theq...'

Aldwyn frowns a little.

Crenna says 'But with whomever promoted him and continues to stand by him in a leadership role.'

Crenna looks in your eyes, her eyes filled with concern.

Crenna says 'And regarding Theq, I will follow his orders, but...'

Crenna says 'I do not have faith in him as a leader.'

Aldwyn says 'And that is fine.'

Theq bellows 'Is Crenna the big or the little spoon in there? '

Aldwyn says 'Leaders have to earn the trust of their followers.'

Crenna says 'And trust, once broken, can be hard to regain.'

Crenna says 'Is he.. normally so belligerent, yelling like that?'

Aldwyn says 'He can be. As I said he came to us someone who went from tavern to tavern brawling and found a place he wanted to make his home'

Aldwyn says 'He's actually grown tremendously'

Aldwyn says 'I'm sorry. I was just informed that Santino has taken Joryn and Theq on a mission together.'

Crenna says 'Will Joryn be alright...with...HIM?'

Aldwyn says 'With Santino there, I have no doubt.'

Crenna nods and sighs.

Crenna says 'Are you expected to go with them?'

Aldwyn shakes his head.

Crenna says 'I.. realize I was out of line.'

Aldwyn says 'I'm where I'm needed right now'

Crenna says 'I... yes.'

Aldwyn says 'You were not out of line either.'

Crenna says 'I realize I was out of line. That... Theq as my superior... '

Crenna says 'Oh?'

Crenna says 'I... mean, I am not on duty...but then again that really doesn't matter.'

Crenna struggles to find the right words.

Aldwyn says 'You stood up for a friend who was being bullied'

Aldwyn says 'I would hope any under me would stand up to me the same way if I were out of line.'

Crenna says 'Yes. But I should have perhaps let you and Santino handle it.'

Crenna says 'I mean you two were present.'

Crenna says 'Am I...'

Aldwyn nods in agreement.

Aldwyn says 'We should have put a stop to it sooner than we did'

Crenna sighs.

Crenna says 'My parents....'

Aldwyn looks back up into your eyes, "Are you...?"

Crenna says 'When I first told them my plan for this year... they warned me that life in the ranks would be so very different from what I'm accustomed to.'

Aldwyn nods in agreement.

Aldwyn says 'They were probably right about that.'

Crenna says 'I realize that I can work harder to adapt more.'

Aldwyn says 'All of us do. With each new member of the family we all have to adapt and learn from them, even as they learn from us. It's how we grow strong.'

Aldwyn says 'Every person, no matter where they come from has something to offer the family.'

Crenna says 'I suppose I need to spar Theq... and drink with him, I suppose. '

Aldwyn smirks.

Crenna says 'Alcohol and fighting seem to be his language.'

Crenna says 'Oh I was serious.'

Aldwyn says 'It is the one he understands the best'

Crenna says 'I was taught to...try and reach people where they are at...rather than with your own preferences or where you wish they were.'

Crenna says 'I just... got so angry seeing all that Joryn has been through....and then hearing about the tailor...and then Theq.'

Aldwyn nods in agreement.

Crenna says 'Do you...have any advice for me?'

Aldwyn says 'I think that after the dust settles...Joryn will have earned some respect from Theq tonight.'

Aldwyn sighs loudly.

Aldwyn thinks hard.

Crenna says 'And have lost respect for me... '

Aldwyn says 'It is a hard line to walk always.'

Aldwyn says 'You see those you care for and want to help them.'

Aldwyn says 'But you also have to give them the chance to grow their own wings.'

Aldwyn says 'And it's always difficult to tell where you draw that line.'

Crenna nods considering your words.

Crenna says 'Well. I will try...'

Theq bellows 'Hope there's cuddling after.'

Crenna says '... To be open minded and see whatever you and Santino see in him.'

Aldwyn says 'Honestly, the spar and drinking would probably help you reach him'

Crenna says 'I had... though to suggest introducing you to them...and then due to the Great Game, when they questioned me later regarding you being a possible suitor...'

Crenna says 'Well...'

Crenna coughs loudly.

Aldwyn blinks his eyes innocently.

Aldwyn says 'Well?'

Crenna says 'Well my blushing alone would convince them no matter if I said otherwise.'

Crenna looks in your eyes and smiles slightly.

Crenna says 'Of course, it would help if you could...say some nice things about me.'

Aldwyn gives an impish grin. How adorable.

Crenna says 'I am not asking you to lie. And I am not intending to lie to my parents.'

Crenna says 'Truth be told, I could tell them that I have chosen to live my life as I see fit.'

Crenna says 'But it would certainly be... simpler...to let them believe what they will with a few carefully chosen words and denials.'

Aldwyn says 'So I should tell them that their daughter is an intelligent, fiery, impassioned woman that is rising quickly through our ranks and making quite the name for herself and her family.'

Aldwyn gives a half-smile.

Crenna smiles happily.

Crenna says 'Only if you feel that is true.'

Crenna says 'As for me blushing, well, that would come on its own upon mentioning something like, 'Of course he is handsome, Mother, but it just wouldn't be proper and he's bound by duty.'

Crenna says 'Well as least, I think that's true. I suppose they would also hear a tinge of disappointment.'

Crenna winks suggestively.

Aldwyn says 'Oh no, it would not be proper at all.'

OOC: I originally chose Crenna's backstory to -prevent- romantic entanglements (hence parents trying to arrange her marriage and her focus on duty). Then starting in April respect turned to loyalty and then deepened into love, but she never thought in a million years (having believed the rumors about Berelain and Aldwyn) that it could ever be reciprocated, hence her flirtations with other men. But, when a few people RP together who are character-driven with lots of internal RP as well....anything can happen.

And so I was afraid Crenna would chose to leave the Wingers (OOC me crying, 'nooooo!') I was completely surprised by what happened instead. Also, I was laughing hard each time Theq bellowed and when he joined us. So much fun. hehe

rents out his rooms to customers. A large fireplace is built into the southern
wall, and warms the room.

A ledger lies on a small stand.

the city from attack, and small murder holes above the gate are barely
visible. A small alley leads off to the west, and looks to lead to seedier
parts of town. Tall towers dominate the view of the city to the south. The
stone road here is worn smooth.

A Small Plaza
This plaza is paved with red bricks, and a small fountain splashes water up
into the air in the center of it. To the north, a road snakes towards the
northern city gates, while a wide boulevard leads to the east and west. The
red bricks below have been worn smooth by many passing feet over the years,
as this plaza is normally a busy center of activity here in Mayene.
