Summary: Emily continues trying to get familiar with cairhien and understand it. It is...different. Emily bumps into Lady Aira and they discuss the vast differences between Cairhien the city and the villages in the countryside. Aira lends the Wisdom a horse, saving Emily from having to replace her boots again from the trek to/from Maerone (a pair of silver-tooled boots (used)!!!).

Point of view: Emily
Main character: Emily and Aira
Missing Participant: Larry (the Cairhienin Guard mob)
Replaced Larry: a sneaky gray palfrey from Far Madding (Emily has named her Winifred)

This is a part of a series of Emily's logs in getting to know Cairhien more. The first was with Zira here: viewtopic.php?f=79&t=16209

Cairhien Intersection
A huge intersection cuts and divides the roads. To the east and west, road
and walkway lead deeper into the huge city, engulfing people and wagons
alike. To the south, the Sun Palace towers high into the sky, its immense
layers adding to its majesty. The cobblestone road is laid out with exact
angles to the roads that run to the east and west, and to the ramp that
lies to the south. A large banner witha a map of the city has been posted.
[ obvious exits: N E S W ]
A stout wooden barrel stands nearby.
An elaborately sculpted marble fountain splashes merrily.
An oil lamp, set in a steel cage, hangs from a high wooden pole.
A city lamplighter stands nearby, attending his duties.
|1|.A gray palfrey prances skittishly nearby.
The Cairhien town crier stands here, spreading the news.

Aira has arrived from the west, riding a |1|.gray palfrey.

Aira pulls the reins, motioning the horse to stop.

Aira pats a gray palfrey on his head.

Emily walks through the square and almost bumps into a rather sturdy looking horse.

Aira gathers the reins in one hand and dismounts, stretching her legs for a moment.

Aira stops riding a gray palfrey.

A gray palfrey now follows Aira.

Aira says 'Ahhh.'

Emily stretches a little, then refocuses on Aira.

Aira says 'Good day, Wisdom! I hope the morning finds you well?'

Emily says 'That's quite a horse you have there. Quite sneaky! Did it find its way into the rogue trainer?'

Aira says 'It... ah... is a Far Madding horse. I'm not well versed in how they train their horses.'

Emily runs her hand down her dress, brushing off a cloud of dust.

Aira studies a gray palfrey.

Emily says 'I am doing well. Just came up from your southern town of Maerone. It is a bit of a trek to get back to the city.'

Emily peers off to her left and then to her right.

Aira says 'It is.'

Aira pauses for a moment and thinks.

Emily says 'I was in the middle of deciding which inn to patron tonight. There's quite a few options.'

Aira says 'Did you walk, Wisdom? If so, we must arrange for you to have proper transportation.'

Emily nods in the affirmative, then stretches her left leg for effect.

Aira shakes her head, her curls bouncing gently.

Emily says 'I did! That village and the ones in between don't seem very fond of horses. I didn't think it would be a long journey...yet...'

Aira says 'This will not do. I am sure that exercise is good for any given person, but sometimes your work necessitates speed.'

Emily sits down on the edge of the fountain and takes off one of her boots.

Bits of rock and dust fall swiftly from the upturned boot ( Emily )

The steady toll of a gong calls defenders to the stone.

Aira smirks slightly and comments 'I hate it when that happens. Pebbles underfoot. How do they even manage to enter a solid boot?'

Emily says 'The quicker one goes, the more dirt one kicks up.'

The steady toll of a gong calls defenders to the stone.

Emily says 'I feel like there is an allegory in there somewhere.'

Aira looks pensive and nods slowly.

Emily notices Aira's look with a turned head.

Emily says 'Allegory, Aira, I said Allegory. Not Alligator.'

Aira says 'It is one of the reasons I really dislike slippers, even though they are fashionable in palaces.'

Emily repeats the word in a deadpan and says 'Slippers.'

Aira chuckles lightly at what Emily just said.

Aira catches Emily's look and says 'Like those Tairen clogs, but made of fabric.'

Emily says 'That seems whole impractical for any purpose. Slippers are for getting to the privy in the middle of the night to avoid cold stones.'

Aira nods at Emily.

Emily says 'I wouldn't be able to get from your yonder inn to your hither inn in slippers. These brutes would step all over them!'

Emily glares around her at the people passing the square in breakneck speeds.

Aira says 'And the worst is when someone steps on the back!'

The River Lady has arrived at the docks.

Emily holds up a finger at the mention.

Emily says 'Now, are we talking full-foot sandals, or thongs with that little slip between the big toe?'

The blazing sun fades into greyness behind the towers.

Aira mutters slightly 'In my experience, either are fussy.'

Emily says 'The thongs are the worse when getting stepped on.'

Emily grimaces, her chin raising comically into her jawline.

Aira says 'Truth be told, I try to avoid the blasted things at all cost. Fashionable though as they may be.'

Aira frowns at the palace momentarily.

Emily says 'Some of the other village wisdoms do adore their fashion. I prefer practicality in clothing, and spend my indulgences on things that count. Like food.'

Emily tilts her head to the skies for a moment, as if trying to recall something.

Aira nods along as Emily speaks.

Emily says 'Ah yes, there is something I wished to ask you.'

Aira says 'Yes, or fine horse.'

Aira says 'Ask away, Wisdom.'

Aira smiles kindly.

Emily says 'When we discussed before the subject of my letters, you had mentioned an officer who wanted more involvement of Wisdoms in Cairhien. But I havent been able to find them about. Are they well, or busy about on patrol?'

Aira says 'Truth be told, I have not seen them either.'

The cairhien town crier asks emily if she would like a quest ( Emily )

Aira says 'I wonder if they are abroad, on some diplomatic mission.'

Aira frowns.

Emily smiles politely, dimples dotting each cheeck, as she politely declines, saying she is full.

Emily nods her head up and down a few times, indicating that she follows.

Aira makes a shrugging gesture, adding 'But your presence here is appreciated, even though the person who suggested the idea is not present.'

Emily shrugs indicating that her question wasn't of high import.

Emily says 'I must confess that I spend most of my time in Whitebridge. It is nice to be around Cairhien and treat the people who are in need.'

Aira nods in agreement.

Aira says 'Many people were displaced in Cairhien, leaving much to be desired for their circumstances.'

A city lamplighter exclaims 'Finally.. Time to relax and have a beer!'
The sun peeks over the topless towers of the city.

A city lamplighter extinguishes a streetlamp.

Emily says 'I've made it out to the outlying villages since we spoke last. Quite a different situation than the city.'

Emily clicks her tongue a few times, considering the situation.

Aira says 'How bad was it?'

Emily says 'I won't lie, the resources of the region weren't meant for such an influx of people. Or an influx of ideas and concerns all at once. But it seems more managable. More village-like, in Wisdom terms.'

Emily pulls the string of her apron to tighten it closer about herself.

Aira nods at Emily.

Aira says 'I understand. So many areas of Cairhien are safe, yet people have not returned to their farms.'

Emily says 'I just wonder what that lord down there is doing to help fix things, it is his region after all, but he seems conten with his vineyards.'

The town crier interupts the conversation by crier-splaining how quests work.

Nods politely back at the crier and says 'yes, yes that is fine thank youn dear' ( Emily )

Aira looks up briefly and rolls her eyes, muttering 'Lords...' before clicking her teeth together in embarassment.

Emily says 'It makes for an awkward predicament, Lady Aira.'

Aira nods at Emily.

Emily says 'For, how can a Wisdom take reins of an area that is ruled by a Lord. It is a most un-windomy situation to be put in.'

Aira ponders life, the universe, and everything.

Aira says 'Andoran rural areas aren't ruled by lords? Or nobles?'

Aira says 'Or are these less pre-occupied with their toys?'

Aira smirks.

Emily says 'Not in such proximetry. Most villages are autonomous for all intents and purposes.'

Aira says 'Interesting.'

A Cairhienin lord has arrived from the south.

Emily says 'Even my dear friend Martha's Alidaer, not too far from here, is seperate enough from the island's administration.'

Aira momentarily looks at a lord.

A Cairhienin lord leaves south.

Aira says 'I see. Well, I don't think any village would want an Aes Sedai in its business. It seems... beneath them.'

Emily says 'I would assume they have more important things to busy their time with.'

Emily says 'And yet...'

Emily scratches her chin with her fingers for a moment.

Emily says 'An Aes Sedai of the Gray Ajah came to me today and gave me a piece of sulphur of all things.'

Emily says 'I'm not sure what White Tower business has them giving Wisdoms thinks that smell bad, but it seemed to be on her agenda.'

A pike has been raised here for showing off trophies.

Aira makes a face. 'Sulphur? What in the Light would one want with that? Smells like rotten eggs.'

Emily nods emphatically and shows Aira the pair of thick work gloves she used to handle it.

Emily says 'It was! Now, it does have uses as a powder for a few uses such as an anti-bactarium, but the smell is pretty rank!'

Aira smiles slightly 'For dosing?'

Emily shares a chuckle with Aira.

The shadow of the lamplight dims a little further ( Emily )

The blazing sun fades into greyness behind the towers.

Emily says 'Now, if you'll look at that! I need to be getting back, I think. This time, on a horse!'

Aira hands the reins of the gray palfrey to Emily.

Aira issues the gray palfrey an order.
A gray palfrey stops following Aira.

Aira says 'Use this one.'

Emily places a steady hand on the pommel and lifts herself into the stirrups.

Aira says 'It will blend in with the dusk, making it even sneakier.'

Emily starts riding a gray palfrey.

Aira chuckles at what she just said.

Emily looks below her, wondering how much is the color of the horse and how much of it is cairhienin dust.

Aira pats the horse and says 'Be well now. That's a Wisdom you're carrying, she's important.'

The lamplight illuminates a slight blush on the wisdoms face ( Emily )

Emily says 'Uh, yes. I'll be off now, then.'

Aira says 'Safe travels, Wisdom.'

Emily inclines her head to the Lady of the land.

Emily drinks the water.
