A next step

Post by lynera » Wed Apr 20, 2022 3:48 pm

She had grown tired of washing dishes and sorting books. Her realization at the mural was a great breakthrough in her learning but she still had gaps to fill. Her conversation with the Accepted Pyra gave her an idea, she should seek out classes and maybe by waiting in the classroom she could join in in the next class. The classroom was rather quiet when she arrived so she began looking through papers left behind. Outlines of prior classes sat on the dais and one in particular jumped out at her. Accepted Everesta’s class on timing, this felt like the exact class she needed after her failure to even slow the trolloc in Fal Dara. She settled into a nearby chair and began reading over the notes.

In the Classroom
A board of black slate hangs on the wall near the door, suggesting this
room is used as a classroom. The room is plain and windowless and has
enough place to seat thirty students. A dais with a desk sits at the front
of the room, where the Aes Sedai or Accepted teaching the class can sit.

A haughty young woman strides by practicing Aes Sedai serenity.

The door is opened from the other side.

Tolza has arrived from the west.

Tolza closes the door.

Tolza looks at you.

She looked up and blinked rapidly, startled by the sudden intrusion. Maybe this was a good sign and a class would be starting soon.

You smile happily.

Tolza says 'Follow me please'

Tolza of Murandy is standing here.
A haughty young woman strides by practicing Aes Sedai serenity.

You say 'Do I know you?'

You say 'I was in the middle of reading notes on Everesta's class on timing and weaves'

You smile happily.

Tolza ponders life, the universe, and everything.

You say 'Are you hear to listen to a class as well? I was hoping someone would be teaching today.'

You smile happily.

You say 'Everesta's notes are fascinating though, I could read this for a long time.'

You smile happily.

Tolza says 'Child, did I not ask you to follow me?'

You gasp in astonishment.

You say 'Oh! You are Aes Sedai, I did not recognize you with your identify hidden.'

You now follow Tolza.

Tolza opens the door.

Hallway Outside the Classrooms
This unremarkable gray stone hallway and landing off a stairwell is lined
with a number of doors, marked with the numbers one through twenty. Two
large double doors sit in a pointed archway on the northern end of the

battle scenes hangs on the wall opposite the stairwell.

Before Closed Brown Doors
The landing on this stairwell has a floor of tiles in various hues of
brown. A pair of plain double doors, polished and with brass handles lie to
the north, closed and locked as the Brown Ajah resides on a higher floor. A
portrait of a woman wearing the seven-striped stole adorns the wall, the
colors contrasting sharply with the gray color of her dress.

A large man eyes the surroundings warily, every movement fluid.

Entrance to the Brown Wing
Colorful tiles in seven colors come in from the spiralling hallway to the
south gradually petering out until only tiles in various hues ranging from
beige to dark chocolate remain. Decorated with a frieze of intricately
carved redwood leaves and fruits, this is the entry hall of the Brown Ajah
wing. Just off the corridor a stairwell offers a quick way to reach the
Tower's other levels. A portrait of a woman with the staff and stole adorns
the wall, lit by the light of two gilded wall lamps.

A Long, Portrait-Lined Hall
Portraits framed in dark wood extend up and down the length of the hall,

Study of the Brown Ajah
Tall, arched windows in the northern wall open to a balcony, providing a
choice view of the Erinin as it flows south from the Borderlands. Half the
seating in the room is drawn up around the windows, showing that the
occupants appreciate the panorama. The remaining seats are drawn up in
circles of six to eight, allowing Brown Sisters to discuss the furtherance
of knowledge, or new theories in an informal atmosphere. Colorful wall
hangings depicting still lifes decorate the pale white walls.

A Brown Sister is here, frowning pensively.
Danelle Sedai, sitter for the Brown Ajah stands here deep in thought.

Tolza closes the carveddoor.

Tolza gestures at the door with her hand.

The door silently swings shut and lock with a soft *click*.

Tolza sits down and rests.

This was her first time in a formal setting with an Aes Sedai, her previous experience was a whirlwind that involved a lot of rapid questions. Was she supposed to talk first or was the Aes Sedai? The silence felt like an eternity.

She shifted on the balls of her feet.

Tolza begins to examine the stacks of papers on the large desk.

Tolza glances up at you.

You smile happily.

Tolza says 'Are your knees injured child?'

You say 'No? My knees are fine, why do you ask?'

You limber up for battle by doing some deep knee bends.

Tolza says 'It is protocol to curtsy before an Aes Sedai.'

You curtsey to your audience.

Tolza gives you a faint smile as her eyes dart to her book.

Tolza says 'Very good.'

You say 'I was not aware of the protocol, I will make sure to remember in the future.'

You smile happily.

Tolza says 'Truly?'

You say 'Truly'

Tolza nods in agreement.

Tolza says 'Have you read the hand book yet?'

You say 'My name was entered into the book, yes, but I am not aware of another book.'

Tolza nods in agreement.

The Aes Sedai spoke in hushed tone, she didn’t quite hear what was said but thought it pertained where she could find a copy of the handbook.

You say 'I was just told of the kitchens and chores.'

You smile happily.

Tolza says 'I suggest you read it.'

You say 'Will Sheriam Sedai have a copy or will there one be in the Novice quarters?'

Tolza says 'Actually read it and send me a brief summery via the forums. '

You say 'I do not recall seeing one in the novice quarters when I was cleaning.'

Tolza says 'Do you understand my instructions?'

You say 'Yes, read a copy of the handbook and send you a summary.'

You nod in agreement.

Tolza says 'Can you do that?'

You say 'Yes, that wont be a problem.'

The Aes Sedai started 'I would also like you to study’ before trailing off again in a hushed manner. Something about another book she needed to read, she thought.

Tolza says 'That would be a Tower Outline, from novice to Aes Sedai.'

You say 'Can I find a copy in the classroom? I dont recall seeing one on the desks.'

Tolza says 'Read that as well and send me a report via the forums as well.'

Tolza says 'Again do you understand my instructions?'

You say 'Yes, you would like another report.'

You nod in agreement.

Tolza says 'Will you be able to complete theses tasks?'

You say 'I have completed all tasks given so far, they will not be a problem.'

Tolza says 'Good.'

Tolza says 'Do you require any thing from me at this time?'

You say 'Will this help in my advancement? I am ready to be moved to Accepted.'

You smile happily.

Tolza says 'Perhaps will be the most important things to help you with your advancement.'

You nod in agreement.

Tolza nods in agreement.

You say 'I would very much like to named Accepted so I can return back home.'

You smile happily.

Tolza says 'It is best to cut your old ties.'

Tolza tilts her head as if listening.

Tolza stops resting, and clambers on her feet.

Tolza says 'I am needed else where.'

Tolza gestures with her hand.

The door smoothly swings open.

You say 'I will write your reports.'

Tolza says 'You are dismessed.'

You nod in agreement.

Continuing Down the Hall
A multitude of doors line both sides of the hallway, each with a richly
decorated carved corniche of redwood leaves and cones above them. A
similarly decorated frieze of redwood leaves, flowers and cones sits just
below the curvature of the arched ceiling. Framed portraits in dark wooden

[ obvious exits: N E S W ]

The meeting ended abruptly, she was dismissed and set off to work on these tasks. It was good to finally speak with another Aes Sedai even if it felt like she was being assigned more busy work. If she was diligent on this task, maybe it would lead to her being given formal instruction. She still felt a bit lost and was fumbling her way through things on her own. Maybe these two books the Aes Sedai assigned her to read would shed some light on how to move forward. What did the Aes Sedai mean when she said to cut all ties? She would have to ask more the next time she spoke to her. For now, she needed to focus on the tasks given so she would be moved to Accepted.

[ obvious exits: W ]
A waterlogged Accepted stands here, dripping on the tiles.
A haughty young woman strides by practicing Aes Sedai serenity.

She settled back into the classroom, she had struggled to find a copy of the handbook the Aes Sedai had mentioned but eventually picked up an open copy sitting on a desk in the library. Hopefully she did not take the book from another novice that was assigned the same task. She picked up her pen and began writing her summary,

Section 1. Ask an Aes Sedai if you have any questions. All time spent in the Tower as a Novice or Accepted should be focused on becoming an Aes Sedai. Do not do channel into objects, use portal stones, or hold too much of the one power.

She put her pen down and frowned, this first section was exactly what she was doing, putting all her effort into becoming an Aes Sedai. She rarely was idle and often was engaged in self learning as Aes Sedai were rarely available. That was the next problem, she had so many questions and yet so far she had only met two Aes Sedai both of which didn’t have time for her questions. The idea of channeling into an object was new to her, why would anyone do this? What would they possibly gain except by destroying the object or making it float? She sighed and moved on to the next section.

Section 2. All tower members must follow the Three Oaths, do not lie, do not make weapons, do not use the One Power as a weapon except against Shadowspawn or in last defense of life. General protocol includes, obeying Aes Sedai, addressing Aes Sedai as Aes Sedai and curtseying, revealing your identity at all times, and not traveling with a male channeler. Do not use equipment of the Shadow and do not steal items from others. Reside in the lodging provided and not outside the city. Gate, shield, compulsion, incinerate, and balefire are forbidden weaves. Angrael should be returned to Aes Sedai.

She paused again. Angrael? she thought to herself. How will I know when something is an angrael if I am not to channel into an object?. She shook her head and read back over what she had written so far. Balefire, that word jumped out to her, what exactly was this and why was it banned? Yet another question she would have to ask an Aes Sedai if they ever had time for her. She picked her pen up and continued her summary.

You may be sent to the farm as penance and could be dismissed from the White Tower. Dismissal can occur for failing to pass the Test of Three Silver Archers or One Hundred Weaves, insubordination, committing a crime, breaking tower rules, and personal request. Once dismissed from the Tower you cannot return.

Tests? she thought again. One Hundred weaves did not seem like a challenge to her but what were the Arches? Still more questions, maybe if she continued through this handbook and into the next task there would be some clarity.

Section 3. Novices cannot leave Tar Valon, must obey Accepted, and wear novice white. Novice Orientation must be completed before being raised to Accepted. Accepted must wear the Accepted Dress and wear a great serpent ring at all times. Journey Accepted cannot trade north of Fal Dara or south of Emonds Field. Tower Accepted cannot travel to places held by Seanchan or Children of Light.

She sighed again, she hoped that the brief tour by the Aes Sedai that inducted her counted as her Orientation. The idea of a different dress raised her spirits, at least she would be seen in a different color than white. She plowed ahead in her task.

Section 4. Novices can receive tasks from the Mistress of Novices and Accepted from the Ajahs directly. Novices and Accepted are encouraged to seek tasks from Aes Sedai.
Section 5. Advancement requires 10 merits to Wearied Novice, 30 to Journey Accepted, and 75 to Tower Accepted. A sitter will be needed to advance an initiate and a 24 hour wait period is required for advancing from Novice to Accepted. 150 merits are required to become Aes Sedai and you must complete a series of quests set by each Ajah along with an apprenticeship with your chosen Ajah. Once this is completed you will be put up for testing.

This was problematic, she had well beyond the 30 merits required to advance to Accepted but so far had only seen two Aes Sedai in the Tower. Maybe she would be fortunate and find Aloisa Sedai again, she was a sitter and could advance her. Hopefully they would waive the 24 hour waiting period since she had already been waiting for months. She would need to focus her attention on finding a Sitter.

Section 6. Merits should be primarily from Tower related activities and not outside activities. Scalps of shadowspawn will not count towards this total. Direct supervision is meant to be in the same group as an Aes Sedai, not being observed from a far.

She carefully read over her summary. She still had a few questions but was glad some of the protocols were finally explained to her. She carefully collected the papers as to not smudge the ink and rushed off to the Brown Ajah wing.

You stop resting, and stand up.

She carefully opened the door.

[ obvious exits: W ]
A waterlogged Accepted stands here, dripping on the tiles.
A haughty young woman strides by practicing Aes Sedai serenity.

She sat down and began reading over the outline the Aes Sedai assigned her to read. The first task was easy, she hoped she could get through this one as quickly and move on to advancement. Quickly she began writing.

Part 1. Section 1. Any female that can channel can approach an Aes Sedai about joining the White Tower. Not every Novice will end up becoming Aes Sedai.
Section 2. Novices are confined to Tar Valon and can earn merits by completing chores. You may not hunt shadowspawn.
Section 3. Novices can request Aes Sedai evaluate them for advancement.
Section 4. Any Aes Sedai may interview you for advancement from Novice to Accepted
Section 5. The Aes Sedai will speak with her peers after the interview and you will have a 24 hour period to wait before being put through the Arches.
Section 6. Failing the test, you will be put out of the tower.

So this is what the Three Silver Arches were, a test. Walking through Arches did not seem like much of a challenge and she would have to press the issue next time she spoke to an Aes Sedai. She frowned, the handbook referenced a Sitter but this document referenced any Aes Sedai. This was also a lot of the same information in the handbook, clearly she was just being assigned busy work. Frustration was beginning to build, she had spent so much time already waiting to join the tower and then to speak to someone on advancement only to be tasked with summarizing two nearly identical documents. Clearly they were limiting her and trying to hold her back, why wouldn’t they take the time to instruct her properly? Was it her lack of family connections or did they not like the way she looked? Was she too old and they didn’t think she was worth the time? Questions swirled in her head. She tried to push them down as she moved on to the next section.

Part 2. Section 1. Accepted can be advanced from Journey to Tower by meeting with an Aes Sedai, if the Aes Sedai deems you are ready you will be advanced.
Section 2. Journey and Tower Accepted can gain merits by interacting with Aes Sedai. Merits awarded are at the discretion of the Aes Sedai.
Section 3. 150 merits are required to qualify for Shawling.
Section 4. Tower Accepted should be selecting an Ajah to apprentice with and completing Ajah Shawling Quests on reaching 140 merits.
Section 5. Advancement from Tower Accepted is dependent on an Aes Sedai feeling you are ready and putting you up for a vote.
Section 6/7/8. If the vote is successful, you will be given the Shawling Test and have two opportunities to pass.

So much advancement was dependent on Aes Sedai and she had so far only spoken to two in nearly a years time. She came here to learn and all of her learning was self taught, the Aes Sedai were only pushing her to do chores and busy work. How was she ever supposed to understand her ability when all her time was spent writing papers, washing dishes, or shelving books? If she was just going to be stuck doing meaningless tasks here, she should return to Fal Dara and at least help out in their fight vs the Shadowspawn. Working at the seamtress and patching clothing of the soldiers to the north was more meaningful than this pointless busy work. She took a few deep breaths and collected herself. She would give them another chance, with the completion of this paper she should be ready for advancement. She would turn this in and wait to see if she would be advanced. She read over the summary one more time and headed back to the Brown Ajah wing to hand in her assignment.

She carefully opened the door.

She carefully closed the door.

She sat down and shuffled through some of the papers left behind. Most of the classes seemed to be on practical matters, a class on potions by Brandicole, a class on treaties by Chloro, a class involving avoiding criminals by Draz and Sarai, and a class on locate and travel by Tolza. She paused on the last one, this might be interesting she thought. Lets see what the Aes Sedai had to say on these weaves and if there is anything useful to be gleaned. She began reading over outline hoping to learn something new.
