Tales of a Brown- part 16 - log with Kordin ---&RPaward

Post by Callesa » Thu Jan 06, 2022 5:58 pm

Callesa Sedai meets Master Kordin of the Illuminators' Guild in Bandar Eban. Together, they discuss the current situation in Tanchico and the west, and Callesa gets some leads on the criminal she is looking for.

Point of view: Callesa
Main participants: Kordin and Callesa
.................

Merry Eric's Tavern
The bitterly cold sea winds that blow in over the Domani Avenue from the
west fails to reach into this warm, merry place called Merry Eric's Tavern.
A local bartender sells drinks at a reasonable price and the atmosphere is
welcoming. There are some stairs leading up to the second floor and the
avenue is south.
[ obvious exits: S U ]8552
Door east: backdoor
A tall Domani man is standing here, stroking his moustache.
Master Kordin al'Dendarii is standing here.
A guard of Bandar Eban is patrolling the streets.
A guard of Bandar Eban is patrolling the streets.
A Swordbrother guard stands dutifully awaiting orders.
A bartender serves customers with a greedy smile.

Kordin bows deeply, traces of soot falling from his coat onto the ground.

Callesa looks around and heads to the right table

Kordin says 'Callesa Sedai! A pleasant surprise to see you this far west!'

You say 'Good to see you, Master Kordin'

Kordin smiles happily.

You smile at him.

Kordin gestures towards the empty seat at the table. 'Please! Please sit down!'

Callesa sits on an empty chair and orders a glass of wine.

Kordin sits down in his chair 'So what brings you to Arad Doman?"

You say 'The west is such a beautiful region, I hope to visit much more often in near future'

Kordin nods in agreement.

You say 'I wish it was just for the beauties of Bandar Eban and the fireworks of your chapter in
Tanchico.'

Kordin runs his left hand knuckles over his beard, then pinches his mustache with thumb and index
knuckle. 'Hmm.'

Kordin says 'So offical Tower business, is it then?'

Callesa looks in your eyes for a second before nodding.

You say 'There is always some Tower business to attend to.'

Kordin says 'The Seanchan?'

You ponder life, the universe, and everything.

You say 'Hard to tell. They don't seem to be directly involved this time, but one never knows.'

You say 'Have they been bothering the Illuminators?'

Kordin pinches the bridge of his nose in apparent irritation.

Kordin says 'Yes and no....'

Callesa frowns slightly: "How so?"

Kordin says 'Our Chapter House in Tanchico is intact, but it is right at the front lines, so to
speak.'

You nod in agreement.

Kordin says 'I am currently not on best terms with the Empire myself'

You say 'Has the life in the city changed a lot? How can it be, a city divided in two.'

Kordin says 'It has changed, how exactly, well that is a question for the poor souls living there.
Even before the Seanchan occupied the western penninsula...well, let's just say the King's army was
busy trying to assert dominance on Almoth, while Panarch's Legion turned a blind eye to Civil
Watch's shady dealings...'

Kordin ponders life, the universe, and everything.

You say 'Tanchico has always been a troubled and challenging city. The Panarch is a strong woman,
but it has always been tricky to tell appart the... official criminals, and the some of the Civil
Watch.'

Kordin nods in agreement.

Kordin says 'Not all are rotten apples, but the amount of thugs, robbers, bandits and the like has
not dwindled since they're been invaded...in fact, it seems to have increased'

You say 'Some even say that the Seanchan and their strictness, so to speak, may bring some order
there. Which will make the fight against the invaders even harder.'

You nod at him.

Kordin says 'Indeed Callesa Sedai, indeed!'

You say 'I am actually interested in a certain smuggler chief and his associates.'

You say 'Ever heard of a man called Ahndrin Felore?'

Kordin runs his left hand knuckles over his beard, then pinches his mustache with thumb and index
knuckle. 'Hmm.'

Kordin says 'Cannot say that I have...who is he?'

Kordin says 'Other than a smuggler'

Kordin sips from the tankard.

You say 'That is exactly what I am trying to find out. He seems to be the head of a smuggler group
with very long fingers.'

You say 'I've found some of his wares and associates in Tear and in Cairhien.'

You say 'If he were an average smuggler, he would be of no concern to the White Tower.'

Kordin nods in agreement.

You say 'But he's been dealing with items that should be kept safe in our hands instead.'

Kordin says 'If I may be so bold....would those items be angreals?'

You nod at him.

Kordin mutters to himself in complete disgust.

Kordin says 'Do you suspect darkfriends are in question?!'

You say 'Yes. There has been a trickle of such items flowing from Tarabon to Cairhien. And falling
into hands of a darkfriend there.'

You nod in agreement.

Kordin grumbles under his breath about certain people.

Kordin says 'I know of one man, a rather annoying thorn in the Guild's side in Tarabon....'

You say 'One darkfriend was on the Cairhien end of the chain. But the question remains, whether the
whole chain is serving the Shadow willingly, or they are mostly just greedy and ignorant fools.'

Kordin says 'Who might be involved....'

Callesa smiles slightly with hope in her eyes.

Kordin nods in agreement.

You say 'Who is he?'

Kordin says 'That is a very good question, Callesa Sedai...you have much more experience than a
humble Illuminator, in these matters...but the kind of people you seek, smugglers that is...most of
those who bother us, are merely thinking they've discovered a quick way to piles of gold...'

Kordin nods in agreement.

Kordin says 'Jaq Arenhald is allegedly his name. Our sources tell us he operates somewhere in
Tarabon, and has many, many minions inside the city, on both ends of the conflict there...'

You nod in agreement.

Kordin says 'We have lost shipments, caravans, had apprentice's injured...'

Kordin mutters to himself in complete disgust.

Kordin drinks dark beer from a dented tankard.

You say 'I hope the thieves will burn themselves with the wares.'

Callesa frowns.

Kordin slams the dented tankard on the table in front of him. 'Forgive my language Aes Sedai, but
the bloody criminals are a bigger menace for the Guild in Tanchico than all the lords and ladies in
the Game in Cairhien...'

You nod at him.
Kordin sighs loudly.

Kordin attempts to calm himself with a few deep breaths.

Kordin says 'Forgive an old man....years of challenges take their toll on ones character...'

Callesa doesn't react with a single face muscle to the outburst and just nods.

You say 'I understand, Master Kordin. It is hard to get any justice and defense in these times.'

Kordin sighs loudly.

Kordin nods in agreement.

Kordin says 'Is there somehow the Guild can assist you in your investigation?'

You say 'I will look into it. This man may know the one I am looking for, or I might at least make
his life a bit more miserable and his business a bit harder.'

You nod at him.

Kordin grins evilly.

You say 'Any information on the criminal groups in Tarabon will be welcome. And also on the balance
between Seanchan and the Taraboners in the daily lives.'

Kordin runs his left hand knuckles over his beard, then pinches his mustache with thumb and index
knuckle. 'Hmm.'

Kordin ponders life, the universe, and everything.

You say 'It is a tricky ground, that city. We've lost so many eyes and ears since the invasion.'

Kordin nods in agreement.

Kordin says 'There are some hired thungs, scoundrels and thieves about on the streets...even the
Seanchan seem to ignore them for now...'

Kordin ponders life, the universe, and everything.

You say 'It is hard to admit, but finding trustworthy allies in the population has been harder
lately in the west. Some would rather see us collared, the Seanchan propaganda is appealing
especially to those who feel undereappreciated and not well protected.'

Kordin says 'The West seems to have been forgotten, Callesa Sedai...'

You say 'Are any Illuminators permanently residing in Tanchico? Would they help, in case of need?'

You nod at him.

Kordin says 'With the corruption in the south-west, the conflicts over Almoth, Amador not putting a
leash on Children....the people are or were desperate for anything or anyone bringing some...I would
say change, rather than order and justice...'

Callesa frowns.

A Swordbrother has arrived from above.

Kordin says 'And all that made travel more dangerous, far fewer travelers these days in Arad Doman
and Tarabon'

Kordin says 'The people do feel abandoned, indeed'

You say 'You are probably right, Master Kordin. The path to reclaiming their trust and hearts will
be thorny. But we must walk it, or the whole continent will crumble and fall. '

Kordin nods in agreement.

Kordin says 'As for my brothers and sisters in Tarabon...as former Master of the Chapter House there
, I do still visit...if for nothing else, but to visit at least...'

You nod in agreement.

Kordin says 'Mistress Aludra also lives there, in the city but she is not quite the social type'

You nod in agreement.

You say 'That is sometimes for the best. The social types often feel more pressured to conform to
changes.'

You say 'I need to be on my way, Master Kordin. Thank you for all your help.'

Kordin says 'A mountain of fireworks pointed at her, could not make Aludra confrom to any change....'

Kordin chuckles politely.

Kordin nods at you.

Kordin says 'My pleasure Callesa Sedai'

Kordin says 'It has been an honor and a privilege'

You smile at him.

You say 'And mine.'

Kordin says 'I do hope we meet again on your travels, and may the Light protect you'

Kordin stands up.

Kordin bows deeply, traces of soot falling from his coat onto the ground.

Callesa stands up and returns the good wishes.

Callesa responds with a slight bow to Master Kordin
