Tales of a Brown- part 14- rplog with Aira and Shiver ---&RPaward

Post by Callesa » Thu Jan 06, 2022 3:03 pm

A meeting of the Aes Sedai with two high ranking members of the Rising Sun, during which they discuss the current developments concerning the darkfriend noblewoman Gevarha Velandi, and the investigations to be continued, deeper in her activities and connections. It remains unclear, whether the current Daes Dae'mar situation will be more of help or hindrance in the efforts of these allies.

point of view: Callesa
main participants: Aira, Shiver, Callesa
........
In the Austere Apartment
[ obvious exits: N ]
A chair made of red oak rests next to the table.
A large desk made of fine, thick wood stands across the room from here.
Lady Aira Ciarron, Baroness is standing here.
A quiet servant awaits instructions from his master.

Shiver has arrived from the south.

Callesa smiles slightly

Aira nods in agreement.

Aira snaps her fingers.

Shiver leans back, cleaning his nails with a knife.

You say 'Thank you, Lady Aira'

A servant clears the table.

A servant puts refreshments on the desk.

Aira gestures towards the desk, inviting you to eat and drink.

You say 'I wanted to discuss some current events with you, as Cairhien has been the center of them.'

You thank Aira heartily.

You get a cup from a desk.
It tastes like hot, bitter tea.

Aira sits down on a large wooden chest, offering the sparse furniture to her guests.

You sit down on a stout oaken chair.

Aira gets a glass of spiced wine from a desk.
Shiver gets a glass of spiced wine from a desk.

Shiver sips from the wine.

Aira raises her goblet in salute.

Shiver leans casually against the wall.

You say 'What is the standing of the House Velandi in the Great Game these days?'

Shiver ponders life, the universe, and everything.

Aira ponders momentarily.

Aira says 'It is not one of the major Houses.'

You nod at her.

Aira says 'However, every House does the same, manoeuvering for power and influence.'

You say 'Nevertheless, it is a noble House with certain money and influence, no matter how minor.'

You say 'Has the recent arrest of lady Gevarha stirred any changes already?'

sip cup
It tastes like hot, bitter tea.

Aira says 'Have you heard of any changes, Captain Shiver?'

Shiver brows furrow.

Shiver says 'My duties have had me in the field more often than not these days.'

Shiver says 'Of late, we have been dealing with Lord Belroi and Lord Meneril'

Shiver says 'The lesser houses have not been . . .a priority.'

You say 'Then those changes should certainly be made. I personally arrested former novice Gevarha
for various crimes, including serving the Shadow as a darkfriend.'

Shiver gasps in astonishment.

Shiver says 'I was not aware of that development.'

Aira clenches a fist.

Aira says 'A darkfriend?'

Shiver seems to turn inward in thought, calculating the implications.

You say 'Nevertheless, some of her crimes are more about her personal profit and that of her House
and therefore more in your jurisdiction than ours. From what my eyes and ears reported, tax
collecters have been either coming back from the mansion richer or not coming at all.'

You nod at her.

You say 'Well, I kept the whole issue rather silent for some time, for obvious reasons. You never
know who speaks to whom in Cairhien.'

Aira says 'Given how her crimes are likely to venture into illegal territory, I am not surprised not
all revenue has been collected.'

You nod at her.

Shiver says 'The King is particularly possessive of taxes and his collectors.'

Shiver nods at Aira.

You nod at him.

Aira says 'However, what would a tax collector have seen that would require them to be bought?'

You say 'Some of her crimes are clearly ours to deal with, such as abuse of the One Power, or
illegal posession and trading of the items of the One Power. But there is much left to explore.'

You say 'Well, Gevarha had invested in various businesses, just like most other minor Houses.'

Aira nods in agreement.
You say 'And for someone of her station, she had a really beautiful manor near Tremonsien.'

Shiver says 'Had?'

You say 'Well, I suppose a darkfriend won't keep her riches, whether or not she is executed.'

You say 'Or does Cairhien's policy say otherwise?'

Shiver says 'Those laws are clear. I just suspected something more disastorous.'

Aira says 'I think Cairhien may be suffering from lingering chaos, in a fashion.'

Aira says 'Before the Aiel War, most revenue came from trades across the Waste.'

Aira says 'The Houses have not exactly found a reliable source of income yet. Except for wine, of
course.'

You nod at her.

You say 'I am aware of the distress Cairhien is facing. But serving Asmodean or any other Forsaken
is not an acceptable solution, we'll surely agree on that.'

Aira says 'I would assume that depends on whether there is a heir to take over. If not, the lands
would fall to the King.'

Shiver nods at Aira.

Aira says 'As would the title and any holdings.'

You say 'The White Tower will of course take everything that has anything to do with the One Power.
Angreal, books, notes. We've already started.'

Aira bows her head in acquiescence.

You say 'I have also gather the little information leading to her accomplices, and the prisoner is
being interrogated.'

You nod at her.

Shiver says 'Where is the prisoner being held? Are others from the estate implicated?'

You say 'The title and the holdings. Is it known who would be the heir?'

You nod at him.

Aira says 'I am unsure. Did the Lady have a child?'

Shiver defers to the Baroness regarding rank and title.

You say 'The prisoner is being held in the White Tower, just like any other channeling criminal.'

Aira suddenly chuckles quietly to herself.

Aira says 'If there is a heir, they would turn up eventually, I am sure of it.'

You say 'One of her guards, Medyr, is in Tar Valon as well. He has been victim of Compulsion and we
hope to help him. But until we succeed, he is not safe to be around.'

You nod at her.

Shiver shudders to think of it.

Aira ponders life, the universe, and everything.

Shiver sips from the wine.

Aira rolls her goblet around in her hand, causing the wine to swirl.

You say 'I would hope the service to the Dark One won't be part of the inheritance. The woman had no
children, to our knowledge, but I haven't studies the whole family tree for all the cousins or aunts.

You say 'But all the Velandi should surely be observed closely and discreetly, if I may give this
piece of advice to Cairhien'

Aira says 'Light send swearing to the Dark One was as easy as it running in the family. If that were
the case, rounding that filth up would be that much easier.'

You nod at her.

Aira says 'You would only have to catch one...'

You say 'We got one, and she is growing tired and scared. She'll talk more and more.'

Aira nods with satisfaction.

Shiver says 'Let us hope she is able to give the information we need.'

You say 'There is one part of this, where I must admit failure though.'

* HP:Healthy SP:Bursting MV:Fresh >

Shiver arches an eyebrow.

Aira says 'I am sure there are those in the palace who will know whether there are more Velandi's
and where to find them.'

Callesa hesitates for a second

Aira gestures with a hand and continues 'After that, keeping an eye on them should be relatively
simple.'

Shiver nods at Aira.

You say 'We know that Gevarha has found two girls with the Spark in the village near her manor. And
those girls are missing. We haven't been able to find them, or any reliable lead to their
whereabouts.'

You nod at her.

Shiver raises a questioning eyebrow.

Aira says hesitantly 'Uh, forgive me for asking, but items of the Power are not made by... you know.
.. doing things to channelers? Killing them? Or... draining... them?'

You say 'Don't underestimate them. Darkfriends are often not stupid. The stupid ones can even get
killed by their own kind or found. The survivors are the clever ones.'

Aira says 'No disrespect meant, Aes Sedai, but you mentioned those items having been found.'

You ponder life, the universe, and everything.

You say 'We no longer know how to make the angreal or ter'angreal, Lady Aira. But based on all that
we know about the Age of Legends, I really don't think any such sacrifices would be part of the
process.'

Aira opens her mouth, then shuts it, nodding.

Aira says 'No, that would not make sense, in that light.''

You say 'The more probable way is channeling specific weaves to specific materials, perhaps
sacrificing some energy or sleep. I really wish we'd know more.'

Callesa frowns.

Shiver says 'My concern is for these girls.'

You say 'It is improbable we'll rediscover angreal making. But finding the two girls is something we
must try.'

You nod at him.

Aira says 'I suppose it could be a question of supply and demand. Who would have use for a young
channeler?'

Shiver says 'Rightly, they should be entrusted to the Tower for training but if they are citizens of
Cairhien, it is our responsibility to have them found.'

You say 'One was the butcher's daughter, the other one was from a merchant family.'

Aira says 'The Shadow? The Seanchan?'

You say 'I got a third gifted girl out in time.'

You nod at her.

You say 'Who knows. The Shadow is probable, as the disappearances correlate with some of the visits
by Asmodean.'

Aira says 'The Aiel and the Sharans sound unlikely. Although Aiel do trade Cairhienin they find in
the Waste to the Sharans, or so I'm told.'

Shiver says 'The Forsaken have returned?'

You say 'But what would the Shadow do with them? If they wanted to kill them, there was no reason to
go through all the trouble. '

You nod at him.

Shiver says 'You have mentioned Asmod . .deus . . Asmodean multiple times.'

You say 'They may have been back for some time, but not sure how free they are at the moment.'

Shiver says 'Would they not compel them as well? '

Aira says 'I have fought Lanfear myself. Either her or an imposter.'

You say 'They could compel them, collar them like the Seanchan, gift them to someone, turn them to
the dark, the options are numerous'

Shiver looks askance with a wry grin.

Aira says '( 1, Lanfear :P )'

Shiver says 'Those do not sound good, in any case.'

Callesa takes a piece of paper out of her pack and hands it to Lady Aira

You say 'Here is the description of the girls, but their families can surely tell you more.'

Aira reaches out and takes the paper, studying it carefully.

You say 'They believed Gevarha had sent the girls to Tar Valon. But now they know.'

Aira passes the paper to Shiver.

Shiver says 'Do they have other children? Would they have been tested for this "spark"? Is it
hereditary?'

Shiver examines the page.

Callesa smiles slightly at Shiver.

Aira holds up a finger.

Shiver bites off his questions.

You say 'Yes, it is hereditary, but not everyone in the family has to have it. It can appear out of
nowhere, skip generations, or concern just some siblings. '

You say 'But that is the responsibility of the White Tower, we are keeping an eye on them.'

Aira says 'You said we, you, have lost the art of making these items of the Power, but you found
many items. How can this be?'

You peer closely at Shiver, trying to figure him out.

You say 'That is an excellent question, Lady Aira. I hope to find the answer at the end of the
smuggling chain. My guess are collections of art or supposed junk, that somehow survived the
Breaking and escaped our attention until now.'

Aira frowns.

You say 'My reliable source claims that the items had not been stolen from the Stone of Tear.'

Aira says 'I am suddenly grateful I do not enjoy knick-knacks.'

Shiver says 'I have run across such items and turned them over to the Tower.'

Shiver says 'There are a few corners of villany in the world where those are trafficked. I have
broken up a few rings and found some oddities.'

You nod at him.

Shiver says 'Tear is very well guarded. Most of my finds are in the seatowns or near enough.'

You say 'Should you discover anything of similar nature during your investigations of the House
Velandi and their friends or allies, please let me know immediately.'

You nod at him.

Shiver nods in agreement.

Shiver says 'A butcher and merchant's daughter. Looks like I have some investigating to do.'

Aira nods in agreement.

You say 'And I suppose I don't need to remind you that we have enemies everywhere. I don't envy you
the task of dealing with this in the middle of Daes dae'Mar'

Aira says 'Indeed. But one would hope even the most skillful player of the Great Game would not
stoop to consciously trying to benefit from darkfriends.'

Shiver nods in agreement.

Callesa laughs quietly.

Shiver says 'There are unspoken rules to the Game.'

You say 'You might underestimate how stupid or greedy can people be.'

Aira shrugs slightly.

Shiver says 'regardless, they would be held accountable and all others who walk in the light would
dispossess them of their ill-gotten gains.'

Aira nods at Shiver.
You nod at him.

Aira says 'It would be very easy to blackmail someone if you had knowledge of a darkfriend.'

You say 'I hope so. Perhaps a skilled player might use that for our benefit, get them working for us
without even realizing it.'

Aira says 'Chances are, it is not widespread knowledge.'

You say 'No, but the opulent dinners and balls in Gevarha's mansion were pretty public knowledge.'

You say 'Just like some of her ties to friends and allies.'

Aira nods in agreement.

You say 'And who knows what you'll find, while investigating her other activities.'

Aira says 'Indeed. Ill characters often draw ill characters.'

You say 'Thank you very much for inviting me, Lady Aira, you're an excellent host.'

Shiver says 'The strings attached to a Darkfriend lead back to the Dark One himself. This is
dangerous work. It is good to have allies in the Tower in these dark days.'

Aira bows her head slightly.

A servant has arrived from the north.

You say 'And thank you both for assisting the White Tower and myself. Serving the Light together in
this matter will be an honour.'

You stand up.

Aira says 'Indeed.'

You smile at him.

Aira follows the Aes Sedai's example and stands, dusting off her clothes.

Aira says 'Allow me to escort you out.'
