A log in which Accepted and Brown Ajah Apprentice Lexica seeks out Liia Sedai of the Brown Ajah for some help in cartography. Callesa Sedai of the Brown Ajah joins in and soon Accepted Lexica has more takeaways than anticipated.

Point of view: Lexica
Main character: Liia
Main character: Callesa

The door is opened from the other side.

Study of the Brown Ajah
Tall, arched windows in the northern wall open to a balcony, providing a
choice view of the Erinin as it flows south from the Borderlands. Half the
seating in the room is drawn up around the windows, showing that the
occupants appreciate the panorama. The remaining seats are drawn up in
circles of six to eight, allowing Brown Sisters to discuss the furtherance
of knowledge, or new theories in an informal atmosphere. Colorful wall
hangings depicting still lifes decorate the pale white walls.

A large desk made of fine, thick wood stands across the room from here.
Liia Averon, Brown Cartographer is standing here.
A silver-haired Aes Sedai sits here, reading.
A Brown Sister is here, frowning pensively.
Danelle Sedai, sitter for the Brown Ajah stands here deep in thought.

You curtsey before her.

Liia inclines her head in greeting to you.

You say 'Good Afternoon Liia Sedai'

Liia says 'Welcome, Accepted. I'm glad we could find this time.'

You say 'Thank you for making the time to speak with me, I know you have duties elsewhere.'

Your cheeks are burning.

Liia says 'What is it you wish to speak to me about?'

You say 'Two topics actually, one I am apprenticed to Catisune Sedai but have not been able to contact her for some time.'

Liia strokes her chin thoughtfully.

You say 'I have spoken briefly with Callesa Sedai about this and she was also unable to contact Catisune'

Yuck, try to cover your mouth next time!

You say 'Catisune Sedai'

Liia nods at you.

You say 'I was hoping you could try to reach her as well or let me know if there was anything I could be doing in the interim.'

Your cheeks are burning.

Liia says 'I feel like I have spoken to her recently, but I can try to get in contact with her.'

You nod in agreement.

Liia says 'How have you been progressing with your studies?'

You say 'They are progressing but I have hit a roadblock of sorts. I was hoping you might be able to guide me in the right direction.'

You say 'Your area of expertise is Cartography, correct?'

Liia says 'It is'

Liia smiles happily.

You smile happily.

You say 'In my studies under Catisune, we had focused on the Ten Nations Compact and several key events. Do you have familiarity of the maps from that time period?'

Erulisse has arrived from the south.

Erulisse greets Liia with a light kiss on her cheek.

You curtsey before her.

Erulisse leaves south.

Liia says 'I have a rough understanding, but my knowledge is more contemporary.'

You nod in agreement.

Liia strokes her chin thoughtfully.

You say 'The Battle of Maighande was a major victory at the time but its location seems to be a mystery. I was hoping to try to find the location as it might offer some clues or insight in the battle against the Shadow.'

Liia says 'Hmm... an interesting thought for sure'

Liia says 'A very decisive battle indeed'

You say 'I have been unable to locate any maps that refer to the name Maighande, so I am a bit lost on the next steps.'

You say 'Catisune Sedai was going to offer some assistance in translating the Old Tongue but I have not been able to speak to her on that point.'

Liia says 'Perhaps by evaluating the participants in the battle, an approximate location could be found.'

Liia says 'Do you know which nations were present for the fight?'

You say 'Arihdol and Manetheren had fallen at that point and I believe several of the northern nations as well.'

Callesa has arrived from the south.

Callesa arches an eyebrow.

Liia says 'You have posed quite a difficult question'

You curtsey before her.

Liia greets Callesa with a light kiss on her cheek.

You say 'Good Morning Callesa Sedai'

Callesa says 'Ah, do I disturb, Sister? The door was open!'

Callesa frowns.

Liia closes the door.

Liia says 'Not at all!'

Callesa says 'When will the girls learn to close doors, knock, and so on.'

Callesa sighs loudly.

You say 'Apologies Callesa Sedai, I was too excited for an opportunity to speak with Liia Sedai regarding ancient maps.'

Your cheeks are burning.

Callesa nods in agreement.

Callesa says 'Indeed, Liia is our specialist in this subject.'

Callesa says 'Don't let me disturb you.'

Liia says 'I informed her my specialty is more contemporary cartography'

Callesa takes some paperwork out of the shelf.

Callesa nods in agreement.

Liia says 'Perhaps you're more well versed in the pact of the Ten Nations?'

Callesa ponders life, the universe, and everything.

Liia says 'specifically she is looking into The Battle of Maighande'

Callesa says 'My speciality is more ancient history, the War of the Power and the Breaking, but I will do my best to satisfy her curiosity.'

Liia says 'We are considering where the battle might have taken place. It's location has been lost to time.'

Callesa says 'I suppose she has already studied the basics in the Library. Lexica, what questions burn you about the Battle of Maighande?'

Callesa nods in agreement.

Callesa says 'True. But we might be able to make some more or less educated guesses.'

You say 'Shortly after shadowspawn were pushed out of Tar Valon, there was a series of victories for the Light. Do Kaisin Pass or Sorelle Step appear on any maps?'

Callesa turns to Danelle: "Sister, can you remember where did I put my second green notebook? I cannot find it in my rooms."

Callesa smiles in relief as Danelle hands her the lost notebook.

You say 'I guess that after being driven from Tar Valon that the shadowspawn moved north.'

You say 'and that the likely location would be somewhere between the smaller skirmishes and the blight itself.'

Liia says 'North I think is a reasonable guess'

Callesa nods at Liia.

You say 'Do you think that is too large of an assumption on my part? That the battle did not take place in the blight?'

Callesa says 'It is, however there are several ways to get to the North.'

Callesa says 'Let's not forget that the Battle turned the tides, after a few decades of Shadow pushing to the South.'

You nod in agreement.

Callesa says 'So, I find it more likely that it was not so far in the north, it was more of a defensive battle, if I may use such a word.'

You say 'That is the reason I keep thinking it might be Tarwin's Gap. That would be a place a smaller force could make a stand against superior numbers.'

Liia says 'My guess is that the Soralle Step may be in the borderlands.'

You say 'But Callesa Sedai you raised another point of consideration, there are more ways to head north. So maybe I should also investigate the area more towards the west and Maradon.'

Liia says 'I think borderlanders were involved in fighting there.'

Callesa says 'It probably stopped the trollocs from progressing even further. However, let's also not forget the big picture. The Nations put together all they could to fight, but they were leaving behind empoverished and fragile countries. They couldn't have risked to go too far to the north'

You ponder life, the universe, and everything.

Callesa nods at Liia.

Callesa says 'The Gap is indeed an important strategic point, giving an advantage to the Light, but not the only one. Let me find that note I copied from Ishandra Sedai's book, written five hundred years ago...'

Callesa leafs through her green notebook

You say 'That could also be a key point for making the case it could be to the west. Aridhol and Manetheren had fallen by the time the battle occurred.'

Callesa says 'What makes you think that the Gap would be such an advantage for smaller numbers of the armies of the Ten Nations? Based on known resources, there could have been hundreds of thousands of soldiers on our side.'

Callesa says 'So, a wide field wouldn't be without advantages too.'

Liia strokes her chin thoughtfully.

Liia says 'There are plains in the western borderlands. Those could most definitely see a large battle.'

Callesa nods at Liia.

You ponder life, the universe, and everything.

You say 'I think I now see the next steps needed in my research.'

Callesa ponders life, the universe, and everything.

Callesa searches further into her notes: Yes, here! What was the southernmost point, that the Trolloc Armies reached?

You say 'The strain on the remaining nations is a key point I had not considered. Better understanding their locations would help identify a place where a large army could more easily gather.'

You say 'So I would start by looking closer into Aelgar, Eharon, Essenia, Jaramide, and Safer.'

Callesa says 'Th southern most point that the Trolloc Armies reached was the city of Barashta. In Ebou Dar. So, how can we be sure, that we are looking for a place north of Tar Valon?'

You nod at her.

Callesa says 'The Trolloc armies were indeed beaten at the Kaisin Pass, the Sorelle Step, Larapelle, and Tel Norwin'

Callesa says 'I am not sure right now, I am not well enough versed in the ancient maps, but I would indeed believe the Kaisin Pass to be the Gap, or another such place. '

Callesa says 'But it was not the only victory. And the Trollocs were in various places by then.'

Liia nods at Callesa.

Callesa says 'The trollocs could have had a long run between the place of the Battle of Maighande and the Blight.'

Callesa says 'I am not sure most resources from those times can tell us, whether a raging group of trollocs was running to the battle and destroyinng farms and villages, or from the battle.'

Callesa ponders life, the universe, and everything.

Callesa says 'I am afraid I've widened your options, instead of narrowing them, Lexica.'

Liia grins evilly.

You say 'Dreadlords were present, so maybe they did not have to run. '

Callesa smiles slightly.

Callesa nods at you.

Callesa says 'Another great point, Accepted.'

Callesa says 'Or they could have used the Ways, or Portal Stones.'

You nod at her.

Callesa says 'So, how did you plan to continue the research, at least until I shattered the plan to pieces by proposing half the continent to you?'

Callesa looks at you.

You say 'I think I will focus on the nations that participated in the battle. Their location or common borders could be helpful in identifying a gathering point.'

Callesa nods in agreement.

Callesa says 'We know that Aridhol and Manetheren couldn't have sent anything by then, so we need a place the others could have reached and that would make a strategic sense.'

You nod in agreement.

You say 'I will need to spend some time studying maps in the library.'

You say 'Also, possibly to look for books from those nations. There could be a reference to areas that match the smaller battles we mentioned.'

You smile happily.

Callesa says 'And also reread what we have about Rashima Kerenmosa. She fell heroically on the battlefield, but some of the Sisters close to her wrote about the Campaign.'

You nod in agreement.

Callesa says 'Perhaps you might ask even the Greens. They may not be overly fond of discussing history in general, but this is the Battle of Maighande and Rashima Kerenmosa that we are talking about!'

You fall down laughing.

You say 'I will try to speak to a Green but often they will try to drag me into battle.'

Your cheeks are burning.

Callesa says 'And do something about the laughter, child. While the idea may be amusing, a future Aes Sedai may not wish to fall down laughing, except for in the company of the closes friends perhaps.'

Callesa peers closely at you. Guard your secrets carefully...

Callesa says 'Then learn from them, go into battle sometimes, Light knows we all need those skills these days! And pick their brains, when you can.'

You nod in agreement.

You say 'Thank you both for the help, I have a lot of follow ups now on the subject.'

Callesa nods in agreement.

You say 'Do you require anything else of me or can I return to the library to get started?'

Callesa says 'I hope so. We'll see each other soon.'

Liia smiles at you.

Callesa says 'Nothing for now, get to your studies.'

Callesa smiles at you.

Liia says 'You may return to the library if you wish.'

You curtsey to your audience.

Liia says 'It was nice meeting with you'

Callesa nods in agreement.

You say 'Thank you again Liia Sedai and Callesa Sedai'

Continuing Down the Hall
A multitude of doors line both sides of the hallway, each with a richly
decorated carved corniche of redwood leaves and cones above them. A
similarly decorated frieze of redwood leaves, flowers and cones sits just
below the curvature of the arched ceiling. Framed portraits in dark wooden
frames contrast sharply with the white stone walls.
