The Basics: Commands

Before you can start roleplaying, it will help to know some commands to assist you in creating your own persona as well as how to enhance your interactions.

Basic speech commands:

• say and ' - of course, let's you say things.
• whisper Bobby - allows you to whisper to Bobby in a room
• ask Bobby - allows you to ask Bobby a question

However, you can also moderate the emote command to create your own speech pattern:

• emote speaks in a gruff voice 'Get off my horse!'
• em looks down at her feet before stammering 'I did not know, sir.'
• , reaches for their weapon as they say 'Stop! Right there!'

Note that in order to make it look neat, you will have to add the ' at the beginning and end of what you are saying!

Emotes also let you perform a self-written action:

• emote stomps into the room, throwing his book on the table and sits down sullenly, crossing his arms.
• emote sighs and rolls her eyes as she hears you talk.
• emote 's hands work quickly as they saddle their horse.

There are also socials, which are more standard responses, such as nodding in agreement, smiling happily etc. Type: 'soc' ingame to get a list of socials. Not sure if this is documented anywhere (it's not on the wiki at least) but if you emote 's then it appends the 's directly to your name:

emote 's eye twitches = Reyne's eye twitches.

Roleplay Rules and Etiquette

When you are roleplaying, there are a few rules and courtesies on WoTmud. Here are the bullet points, bare minimum expectations for all players as well as clanned RP:

Bare minimum for ALL players:

• Separating IC/OOC, what you learn OOCly, you can't use ICly.
  • This includes clanning votes. If you didn't learn something on the right alt, that character doesn't know and there shouldn't be making decisions based on it.
• Character separation: if your trolloc knows someone is an mc, your other alts don't.
• Also don't go fishing because of that OOC knowledge.

Bare minimum RP expected in all clans:

• Respecting rank in non-pk situations, such as saluting or addressing someone appropriately in ceremonial circumstances and IC events.
  • E.g. if the Amyrlin is addressing the crowd, or Lanfear is organizing a raid, don't barge in going with things that disturb the atmosphere, like "what's the ho doing here?".

Character Separation

Or in short, what you as the player know, does not automatically equal what your character knows. Obviously you're not expected to flail about in a zone you as a player know, but your new character has never ventured into.

However, if you have DS character who observed a meeting with a darkfriend and you have since learned the name of that darkfriend, your Hand of Light should not use that knowledge to hone in on this darkfriend character with an investigation, let alone publicly declare they are a darkfriend.

Obviously, if the darkfriend screws up somehow and knowledge flows to the Hand of the Light in a natural manner, feel free to pursue the report. However, it may not be enough to fully decide whether someone is or isn't a darkfriend.

This also means that if you fought Sally the Trolloc on your Companion, your Trolloc Bobby is not going to have any In Character knowledge of that player, meaning that you cannot cast a vote regarding clanning, as that would break character separation.

Agency

Agency is one's ability to make choices for themselves. When it comes to RP, the first rule is that you may never rob another player of their agency. You may present them choices, you may even craftily guide them into a catch-22, but you can not remove their ability to choose. This doesn't mean you can't make choices that affect them, there will be times that RP dictates you are the decider and they are the follower, but they still have the choice not to follow your decision. You just can't make choices for them or ignore their choices without just cause in doing so.

For example, if you are playing a Red Ajah Aes Sedai and come across a male channeler, you may roleplay with them and offer them the option to be hunted or to be stilled. They get to make the ultimate choice though. You cannot lead them unwittingly through a Gate into a Stilling ceremony they cannot escape from.

A smaller variety of this comes in the form of forcing people's actions, and I will make it undeniably inappropriate to demonstrate why this should not be a thing.

Bobby and Sally are sitting in a tavern, gossiping about an Illuminator show. Suddenly:

Bobby watches as Sally undresses and looks at him with lust in her eyes.

Cue Sally feeling violated, because she was forced in this situation that she had no choice in.

One way to ensure both parties know where something is going is to communicate through tells. If you have a specific goal in mind, let the other person know!

Respect the Atmosphere:

When you see people roleplaying, or something official is going on, like a mob addressing a player, please show everyone the courtesy of not ploinking down and going full blown OOC like: "so did anyone see the game today? The (insert team here) SUCKED, GO (other team here)!". Or the aforementioned example of calling the Amyrlin/Lanfear a ho.

You don't have to join in in the Roleplay. A simple nod and sitting down quietly or leaving the room is enough! Roleplay is largely voluntary in the game. However, if you are in a clan and especially if what is going on is relevant to your clan or clan's nation, this is one of the instances where you will be expected to do the bare minimum in being in character.

If you're not up for it or have no time, simply excuse yourself:

Bobby salutes grandly.
Bobby says 'Apologies, I am needed elsewhere.'

OR

Bobby excuses himself, mentioning something about other duties.
