The Price of a Drink

Six Weeks Before

In the end, it is the alcohol that gets him.

The man has a hold on the bar like it is driftwood in the Sea of Storms. Ropes of drool seep out of his mouth and onto the cracked varnish. The portly bartender, years aged in the business of caretaker, confessionary, and tapper, and props his head up. Notices me watching.

‘S’ta keep him from choking on his own sick.’

‘Aye. I’ve seen it before. Bad business.’ I make my way from the high top I’m standing at to the bar, consider in passing the thick pouch of coin drooping off the man’s hip. He smells as though he’s been drowned in whiskey.

‘Be careful, there, were I you.’ The bartender’s eyes find mine over the glass he’s polishing. ‘Trouble would follow that.’

I hold up my hands. ‘None for me, barkeep. No tinker, me.’

He nods, sets the glass down. Leans forward on the bar. ‘Wouldn’t be you that’s the trouble. His master ain’t the likes to be trifled with.’

‘One of the…’ I spin my finger in the air, whistle. Militia.

‘Worse’n that.’

‘Ah.’ The single syllable says it all. Lets him know I’m world-wise enough for a different kind of conversation. Not everyone grasps that this city isn’t ruled by the ruler.

I gesture to snoring man. ‘Haven’t seen the like before. Sixteen, was it?’

‘Bartenders can handle that and more.’ He pats his mighty belly. ‘Many more’ta do me.’

I hook my thumb at my neighbor. ‘He tend bar?’

‘One o’the best, when he isn’t sopping drunk. Knows all the fine things.’

‘Why’d it only take sixteen for’em, then?’ We share a laugh.

I settle on a stool, drop my own purse on the counter. Flick my finger forward and back between the him and I. Two pours? He nods appreciatively, finds a thick cinnamon mead, empties the bottle in two tankards. I take a healthy sip, savor the sweet and spice.

‘Yours?’

‘Aye.’

‘I’ll be making this stop more oft’n.’ The room around us is quiet, though the hour isn’t yet late. The soft silence is broken only by whispered conversation in corners, scraping chairs, the whisk of the bar maid’s skirts.

‘What did’em, this eve?’

The bartender shrugs. ‘Bad bets, seems’ta me?’

‘What’d he be placing wagers on round these parts? Number o’ disappearances?’ We chuckle.

‘It’ll be th’ponies for’em.’

I shoot him incredulity. ‘Ponies? These parts? Not’a’soul puttin’ money on the nags from Andor.’

‘Neh, Tairen, that. Owes some High Lord a fortune.’ I wince. He nods. ‘Bet triple .’

‘An’ lost?’

‘Lost.’ A grave nod.

‘Aye, he deserves the drink ta’night.’ Bob my head in compassionate acknowledgement.

‘They have racing tracks in Tear?’

‘Aye. Never made it down there?’

‘Neh. I’m from up Cairhien way. Headed back there soon as the caravan pulls stakes. Know how’t’is.’

He nods understanding my way. ‘Good wine, there. Good vintners.’

‘Aye, and a pretty lady who’s dandling my son on ‘er hip.’ A quick grin on both of our faces.

‘Only versed in the Silver Circuit, me.’

‘Aye, good establishment, that.’

The bartender has begun to loosen up. And so it is time for me to leave. ‘Anyhow. Time is th’time. Save me a few, for the next round, eh?’ I wave my finger at the bottle of mead, finish the rest of the bit in my tankard.

‘I’ll toss your name on’em, mister…?’

‘Gedwyn. Call me Gelly, should’ya wish.’

‘Gelly it is. Well met.’ He takes my hand.

‘This yours?’ I move my hand around. The bar.

‘Neh. On credit.’ He flashes a wink and I take the hint.

I toss a few silvers on the bar top, for the drinks, tip. I tap my sleeping neighbor. ‘His on me, eh? Can’t always have bloody luck.’

‘Him an’ the Governor thank’ee.’

I nod, toss him a mock salute. He grins me out of his bar. I wrap my cloak around me, step out into the street. Make my way north and east through the Low Lane, beyond the Eastern Gates, unwatched save by a choice few. Outside, I sweep away the dark, hooded cloak, drop it and the wagoner brogue as I move. I was there, that day. The day he ripped the duster from his shoulder and pledged to Isaah Viera. The grit and dust of Four Kings filled the air, and under the shade of the Braem on the Caemlyn Road, he made his choice. That day, he began to call himself the Governor of Aringill. He will pay. And so I have business in Tear.

Pawn Shop
Amidst a back alley of the Maule, a small, sordid shop houses the pawnshop
of the city. This shop has acquired a bad reputation, as pawning an item
here is an expensive business, and the price to reclaim items is often
high, if they are not already sold. Still, for those in need of immediate
cash, like the former owner of the magnificent painting on the wall, then
this small shop is the answer, as it deals in all sorts of unexpected
commodities. The muddy alley is out to the north. Badly cared for, this
grubby shop has marks and scuffles on its furniture.

A double gateway, the gates constructed from a dull metal, keeps any
invaders out of the inner city, and is well guarded by a detachment of
defenders. A guardroom is set into the inner wall, and it has doors with
arrow-holes in them, leaving no doubt to its military purpose. The Maule,

Inside the Race Track
Two large sets of tiered seating has been erected in hard stone. Simple in
execution, it is effective for seating those individuals who do not rate a
presence in the owner's box above. Two rows of stiff fencing hem in the
long stripe of dirt that carries into the distance in either direction.

Tonight

* S HP:Healthy MV:Strong >
Nine Horse Hitch.
Odd names these taverns in Lugard seem to hold. A sign over the door shows a
woman with a bridle and saddle for some reason. The inn itself is kept in
working order, with tables neatly arranged in rows across the middle of the
room. A fireplace stands empty along the southern wall, with the bar along the
north wall. The Middle Road is out the door to the east.

A sour-faced maid keeps a sharp eye on her duties.

Arrogance and vanity worn like badges of honor, this bartender strokes
his long, thin moustache and peers at you arrogantly. His dark hair is worn
below the shoulders and cut in the current style.

A fancy bartender says ‘But for us, t’is too rich.’

* S HP:Healthy MV:Strong >
A fancy bartender says ‘I’ll a few. Have to work, th’eve.’

* S HP:Healthy MV:Strong >
You begin to drink together.

Now

A Cobblestone Path
A large building to the south, eminating the strong aroma of freashly baked
bread, shadows over this small path. To the east, another large building
dominates the skyline, and a sign with a picture of a chicken stands above its
doorway. Westward, the alley becomes even smaller and more cramped, and the
flow of people grows ever smaller.

A fancy bartender walks through the streets arrogantly.

* S HP:Healthy MV:Strong >
You grab a fancy bartender roughly by the shoulder and shove him up against the wall.

* S HP:Healthy MV:Strong >
A fancy bartender says ‘Gelly? You’re drunk man! Take your hands off of me.’

* S HP:Healthy MV:Strong > smash
You smash him once in the mouth, then hold a hand over it.
A fancy bartender makes no sound.

* S HP:Healthy MV:Strong >
You get a silvered steel coin on a thick chain.

* S HP:Healthy MV:Strong >
A fancy bartender’s eyes widen in disbelief.

* S HP:Healthy MV:Strong >
You say ‘It is yours. Your life will be your own again.’

* S HP:Healthy MV:Strong >
You take your hand off a fancy bartender’s mouth cautiously, looking up and down the alley.

* S HP:Healthy MV:Strong >
A fancy bartender says ‘What do you want?’

* S HP:Healthy MV:Strong >
You say ‘You’re going to need to bring me to work tonight.’

* S HP:Healthy MV:Strong >
A fancy bartender starts moaning.

* S HP:Healthy MV:Strong >
A fancy bartender says ‘They’ll kill me!’

* S HP:Healthy MV:Strong >
You lean in close to his face. ‘I’ll kill you, too. But if you choose me, you’ll make thirty thousand crowns and have a chance at living.’

The Foyer
Darkness gives way to a warmly lit room where the rich and pleasant smell
of mahogany fills the air. The foyer of this unknown place exudes a
confident sense of wealth without being gaudy, artwork hanging on the walls
of an area filled with unassuming furniture. Every piece is clearly the
workmanship of a master craftsperson however, and the surrounding fittings
and fixtures of the highest quality.

The Trophy Room
Hung from the walls of this room are cloaks representing every nation and
organization in the known world, some torn and bloodied. Affixed to the
rear wall lies a very old wooden table scarred and marked at almost every
inch, odd by nature of its worn and battered state in contrast to the rest
of the house. Across the table lays a tattered silver-lined duster, torn as
though it was ripped from the shoulders of the wearer. Holding the duster
in place is a silver belt buckle in the shape of a clenched fist.
[ obvious exits: E ]
A small, somewhat rickety table wobbles on unsteady legs.
Jael Viera-Sicarii, The Lord-Mayor of Aringill is standing here.

* S HP:Healthy MV:Strong >
You attempt to hide yourself.

* S HP:Healthy MV:Strong >
You cup the head of Adjudication, preparing to punch with the blade, not rend.

* S HP:Healthy MV:Strong >
Jael starts to laugh.

* S HP:Healthy MV:Strong >
You freeze, wondering when he will turn. But he doesn’t.

* S HP:Healthy MV:Strong > backstab Jael
You silently approach your victim...
- = + * * + = - - = + *

Jael makes a strange sound as you place the blood kama Adjudication in his throat!
Jael is incapacitated, and will die soon if not aided.

* S HP:Healthy MV:Strong >
You clench Jael tight to hold him upright.

* S HP:Healthy MV:Strong > lower
You begin to lower his weight to the floor.
- = + *

Jael’s body makes no noise as he is lowered to the hardwood.

* S HP:Healthy MV:Strong >
You look for any signs of guilt and regret for a life lived unproudly in his face.

* S HP:Healthy MV:Strong >
Jael’s eyes flick to your face. Surprise registers there. Acknowledgement.

* S HP:Healthy MV:Strong >
All you see is what you’ve always seen; dancing hazel eyes, filled with wonder at what life held.

* S HP:Healthy MV:Strong >
Blood spatters the floor as it drops from the blade of Adjudication.

* S HP:Healthy MV:Strong >
You whisper to Jael ‘It would always be my judgement, that would find you in the end, traitor.’

* S HP:Healthy MV:Strong >
You work your lips around it. They are hard words, spoken truthfully, but it does not feel right.

* S HP:Healthy MV:Strong >
Jael spasms in excruciating pain.

* S HP:Healthy MV:Strong >
You decide to soften them, just before the end.

* S HP:Healthy MV:Strong >
You would have fought by this man’s side until the bitter end, if your paths had run together.

* S HP:Healthy MV:Strong >
Jael gurgles softly.

* S HP:Healthy MV:Strong >
You cup his chin, turn his head back to you so that you can look at him.

* S HP:Healthy MV:Strong >
You say ‘Rest now, friend, in peace.”

* S HP:Healthy MV:Strong >
Jael makes a final gurgle and stills, giving up the ghost.
Jael is dead! R.I.P.
You feel the Weave of the Wheel tighten around you.
You receive your share of experience...
Your first time! Was it good for you too?
Your heartbeat races as Jael dies quietly.

* S HP:Healthy MV:Strong >
You stand up.

* S HP:Healthy MV:Strong >
You throw a silvered steel coin on a thick chain through the doorway.
A silvered steel coin on a thick chain clatters loudly as it hits the ground!

* S HP:Healthy MV:Strong >
You yell ‘There will be a mark on your head. Take it, and leave tonight. I would not look back until I was in Amador, were I you.’

* S HP:Healthy MV:Strong >
You hear a scrambling from the other room as a fancy bartender takes your advice.

* S HP:Healthy MV:Strong > get duster
You get a torn silver-lined black velvet duster.

* S HP:Healthy MV:Strong >
You wrap the old fabric around your fist, cast your glance at Jael one last time.

* S HP:Healthy MV:Strong >
Marvelling that such a man could be laid low by a love of whiskey, you make your way slowly north, out of Murandy.

* S HP:Healthy MV:Strong >
The Governor has been laid to rest.
