Dawn was creeping through the curtains, threatening to blind everyone who dared glimpse over their quilts. Sleep was almost mounting a victorious battle, till it finally got pushed back by Kennira bellowing everyone awake.
“Novices do get up, it’s already past six ‘o’ clock in the morning. Chores don’t do themselves and Laras gets impatient with dishing out late breakfast to you girls.”
The steely eyed gaze of the Novice Caretaker washed over everyone. Lazy feet poked around for a firm footing and carried sleepy eyed Novices to the sink bowls. Yawning Firimei stretched almost knocking her friend in the eye.
“Oh my apologies , my body is still waking up. I wonder how many dishes will be waiting for us today?” Firimei exclaimed as her friend smiled wearily.
“I hope they are to be my last , It will be my time to take the Arch test soon. My time here has taught me many a thing and leaves me with a thirst to discover more.” The friend smiled brightly as the last words left her lips.
Firimei smiled back, happy for her friend. Although it left a curious longing thought in her head ‘Was she ready, facing her fears would be immense and the responsibility given to her if she passed…’
“Firimei..Firimei have you heard a word I said?” Kennira looked puzzled and slightly annoyed at repeating herself, something the Caretaker of Novices became displeased, about rather quickly.
Saying that, she had years of experienced coupled with kindness and compassion.
“Hurry along dear, chores develop strength of character . That is something you will need once you take the test for the Accepted ring.”
Gulping slightly and nodding her head in acquiescence Firimei slipped past to her bed and dressed hurriedly , making her way to the hall for a much needed breakfast. Followed by tons and tons of dishes, bumpy paths and the dusty book shelves. Books did give her a hunger to find out more and at least travel out of Tar Valon to lands were information could be gleaned first hand. That thought scared her as much as it did thrill her.
….
Mistress Laras of the Kitchens turned as Firimei walked into her chaotic domain. “ Ah there you are girl, plenty waiting for you to do and if you’re good I have a honey cake or two waiting.” A wink and smile made Laras face erupt into a vision of kindness. It soon disappeared as a clumsy Novice dropped a plate..” Now here girl, how many times have I had to replace these dishes?” Tutting Laras turned briefly to Firimei and winked once more.

Re: Days in a life of Firimei Lang
‘So Firimei, how are you finding life in the banded hem dress?’ Her friends words lingered in the air of their chambers as Firimei picked fluff from her bag.
Looking up with a smile ‘Well the exploration out of Tar Valon has been interesting, enabled me to support those in battle up north and also allowed me some battle experience in Andor!’ Firimei nodded to herself as she mentioned the latter.
‘Of course that is the first a newly arched Accepted does, ponder on leaving the Island and then taking those tentative steps. It is a good experience, meeting those out of the City and stretching
your wings.’ Sarahiah grinned slightly as she looked up from polishing her outdoor boots.
Turning with a nod, Firimei placed her serpent ring safely in her plainly decorated wooden box. ‘I have also pondered a lot on the Ajahs. What they stand for and undertaking the tasks as I can. They are an excellent way for me to see how they work practically.’
Placing newly polished boots on the floor, Sarahiah wiped her hands on the already stained dress and looked up. ‘Philosophising eh, Firi? So what do you want to know or tell me?’ A wry smile was sent to Firimei’s way.
Chuckles escaped the younger Accepted’s lips as she sent a sarcastic glare to her friend ‘You may mock my dear friend, but you’re on the right track! It was a philosophising that has been on my mind lately. Somewhat abstract, but it has some merit…i think Sar.’ Firimei glanced as the light spilled into the room as the sun set behind the Dragonmount.
‘It has to do with the symbolic nature of colour, specifically the Ajah colours. I know from reading they are but basic colours, but when paired with the individual Ajah it has some relative meaning. Although colour symbolism as it were often displays positive and negative qualities.’
Her friend put her dress aside and tilted her head in interest. Her expression was one of perplexity, then she nodded slowly. ‘Oddly enough I do think what I grasp your train of thought. If indeed somewhat abstract and not of my way of observing life.’ So go on lets here what is churning around your head then my friend!’
Firimei turned from the fiery colours of the sunset and nodded. ‘ So without to much fuss, I shall explain each Ajah in turn and see what you think Sar.’
A nod of acknowledgment came from her friend.
‘Where to start, ah the White Ajah. Thinking of the colour or non colour, I feel calm and as if bathed in the brilliant white light. Possibly this is auto suggestion from many relaxation sessions and stories we hear, nonetheless it’s what I feel. So when searching for the truth and logic, white is a suitable reflection on the Ajah.
Firimei sat back as if in thought ‘ Next the Brown Ajah, the colour that names this Ajah I find quite apt. Brown is an earthy colour, steady and grounded. Like an ancient tree. Trees have stood the test of time and seen Ages come and go, heroes rise and fall. In turn the Brown Ajah studies, and preserves what knowledge the trees can tell us.’
‘Interesting theories Firimei, what else have you got?’
Smiling softly Firimei nodded ‘ The colour blue can have many shades. Although they all share common outlooks. Calmness, confidence, feminism, loyalty and of course water. Which it represents in the five elements used for weaving. The Aes Sedai of the Blue Ajah devote themselves to their causes and upholding the just . Part of it is serving warrants and issuing pardons within the realms of Tar Valon. From what I have been told and read the Blue Ajah have the largest network of eyes and ears, so they need to inspire loyalty and confidence in those who share it with them. Blue has been associated with loyalty.’
Glancing outside Firimei watched how flagstones were bathed in a pale orange light, with a soft sigh she turned back to the plainly decorated room. ‘I know this might sound more abstract than the simple explanation which can be offered. It doesn’t hurt to summarise.’
Sarahiah just smiled with a sincerity of a trusted friend. ‘ It is part of our learning, a process of thought. I am eager to hear the rest of it .’
‘Take the Yellow Ajah, known for its abilities to heal. Yellow has long been associated with illness and weakness. So here is a direct correlation with healing. Notwithstanding that there are connections with hope and summer- which could signify well being. It is also a happy bright colour and calming with paler shades. So the symbology here is more simplified that then others.’
Saraiah poured boiling water over to cups of herbal tea, a soothing and aromatic mixture that she had dried over time ‘ That one all can see, even the White. As for others it is up to the individuals interpretation, is it not?’
Chuckling lightly at her friends remarks Firimei nodded ‘Another is red, a colour of fire. It is also one of the five elements standing for the very thing it displays, Fire. Whereas the Red Ajah are known for gentling the tainted males of our world, fire is also a known strength in Male Channeler.
Passion and danger are often associated with red shades. One who dedicates her life to hunting down Male Channeler’s has to be nothing but passionated and one of a single mind.’
Both girls nod as they gaze towards the Dragonmount.
Sipping her tea Firimei leans back in her chair ‘This tea is lovely Sar, you’re a talented brewer of teas my dear. Now where was I? Ah yes green, such a bright fresh bold colour. One suggesting vitality and vigour. We know the Green Ajah are known for their battles on the front line. Their protection of human kind suggests they aid in the renewal of life. Green is also connected with nature and it is documented even the Blight holds life, diseased and crippled as it is.’
Stretching her limbs as Firimei rises, she places the cup on the sideboard and readies her nightwear . ‘So my friend last, but not least gray. A colour made from black and white, a in-between. Which aptly describes what its associative Ajah does, seeks harmony in-between the black and the white. It is a very neutral colour one which is indicative of the position a mediator needs to be in. Seeing how this colour is a mixture of black and white, it is neither clear or shadowed. Being in-between doesn’t mean its a negative, just understanding of the diplomacy involved.’
Her friend stood and smoothed out her dress ‘ A very interesting observation, something to think on. Some of the correlations seem to fit. Be careful not to stray and make a tangent for yourself. It can be simplified and could prove very useful in instruction or suggestion for others.’
Firimei nodded ‘It’s easy to stray slightly, but part of the learning process here is to learn from it all. Be concise, yet detailed and not stray from the topic in hand. There is a time for daydreaming and so on.’
Getting into her own bed, her face picked out from the candle-light Firimei smiled ‘Sarahiah your advice is invaluable and the Brown Ajah will be strengthened when you Shawl. Until then we can share our day dreams and ideas. ‘
‘Thank you, so what to you. Any ideas on an Ajah?’
‘Not as yet, I have much to learn. There are some I find more engaging, from my own studies. Although I need more practical work to make a more informed decision on my future path. Rushing now will only lead to having to make it all up at a later date. I shall continue to think on matters and remove the clutter.’
‘A wise choice Firi, be steady and true. Dabble with all the Ajahs within your borders and don’t make a hasty decision. Now sleep well, for tomorrow brings more work and studies.’

Re: Days in a life of Firimei Lang
Kennira had been there the whole time. Making sure our beds were allocated, items stored and the door opened as we wished. As a Novice and now an Accepted I have taken her for granted, she has always been there and so often over looked.
We feel safe in her presence , as we do in Laras . Both stern, one with a spoon and the other with a look. We are not coddled or favourites. We are girls who need to learn and grow. Aes Sedai teach us , Gaidin display their battle techniques. It is the two women who we so often ignored daily who guide us.
Caretaker of Novices and Accepted’s must be a heavy title to bear, the strength needed daily to just cope with us all. Yes she can keep us in line with a stare or one comment, but with all the bright eyed questions and terse worries that come with progression, it needs a great deal of patience. Maybe more than we are drilled into ourselves.
As far as I know Kennira and Laras have always been here, never been replaced or taken time off. If they did, how did they do it! So many questions when I think about it. Although like the mystery of Aes Sedai, I am left to wonder and just accept their presence and authority. Although never a strict or harsh response was uttered from either lips, even when a dish was broken or items left on the floor.
Now my time within these quarters is drawing to a close, I suddenly realise that I shall miss Kennira. Of course I can pop in now and again, but my life will become a lot different, contemplation and meditation will take priority now. My rooms will be different and the trip to the kitchen will be in passing to gather some supplies.
These two women hold as much mystery as the Amyrlin herself perhaps? Although we always get reminded of Mother, as she is the figurehead of Tar Valon. The Amyrlin guides us girls and women to our goal and beyond. Kennira and Laras are the backbone , the food is always on time and the kitchen like a well oiled cog. Kennira makes sure our sleeping quarters are safe from the worlds threats and we all get along.
As I turn my head to the door I get a glimpse of the caretaker and she is smiling at me. I nod in respect and give her a smile of my own. Turning I head towards the Aes Sedai chambers, where
I shall rest and contemplate my future as a Sister of the White Ajah.
