WoTmud Licensing and setup question

Post by Shzrei » Thu Jul 06, 2017 12:39 am

So.. my laptop died and my work laptop is protected so I cannot install anything on it (but I can run a yTin executable which is how I've been playing)

I've always struggled setting up mud clients, maps, etc.

Does anyone have any input on how far the prohibition for paying for things on WoTmud extends?

i.e. I know I can't buy a heron in game with real world cash. I know I can't pay someone to stat a character for me (except with hugs maybe).

Can I pay someone to set up Zmud (or mudlet, or tintin, etc.) on a USB drive pre-setup with WoTmud maps - happy to pay licensing etc. also.
Can I pay someone savvy to build/online order a computer to spec? That spec suiting mudding purposes. (way less likely as I shouldn't be spending atm!)
Can I pay someone to help code stuff that I want (probably mostly after I've given up).

I've honestly not been able to get an install of zMud to work in 3-4 years (err.. in a 3-4 year period - that probably finished 3-4 years ago!) and getting mudlet installed and a mapper working took me several hours of trial and error (I was still never able to change anything on the map to fix broken connections etc).

None of that would be off limits for paying someone, but someone should be willing to help you out with most of that without payment (minus maybe custom scripting). First would be to buy a working PC, specs don't matter nearly at all for WOTMUD. Get a PC, decide on which client to use (I use cmud, a lot of people still used zmud), buy a license of it, install, and have someone help you with scripts. Might be useful to give someone you trust remote control of your OC via TeamViewer or the like to make it go faster and basically set it up for you.

Thanks Thore,
and also those who have PM'd and skyped me.

I appreciate all the advice and help, and clarity that this is ok (I know stuff I've asked for in the past sometimes hasn't been!)

For scripts you want but don't exist yet - post in Help and someone will get to it, usually Taziar, although I lurk there some too.

For Zmud I can help, just need to know what scripts you like and I can probably do the rest and make it easy. Also can't help you with a map (though I can set it up) - but there are enough floating around it should be okay.

I run my zmud from a usb drive. It still has to be installed on the computer for it to be run (at least that is how I run it).

What kind of scripts are you looking for?

well... craaaaap

In that case I think Mudlet is 'meant' to be able to run from a USB - does anyone know?

I was under the impression it was a difference of being installed on the USB drive, vs having an install file on the USB drive? but I don't get 99% of what this laptop has blocked. Drives me nuts.

To be honest? AHahah was having skype convos with friends who were like, everyone will think you want someone to build a bot pker :) what I really want is the map to work properly, spinning timer, and communications window.

I've never managed to use a targetting script but if one of those could be installed that'd be appreciated also. Or at least a basic version and explanation of how to make it work. (i.e. how to switch between two targets - and then I'll expand it for bash,stab,charge,weave1,weave2,weave3 etc.)

I've also never understood the benefit of the script people use for parsing tracks - If it is super useful and someone could explain it in detail I'd be keen for that.

Oh and god a working tick timer would make me so firetrucking happy. I swear people recognise my alts because I taste food to reset the only one I've ever managed to get working on mudlet.

I worked out a very cool timing script on mudlet - but as my laptop died I suspect I've lost all the work.

...
So.. working mud client
Relatively Up to Date map (pref with door names)
Communication window
Spinning Timer
Tick Timer
Targeting script

If you end up getting zMUD I can help with just about all of that, my current tic timer is not working as intended and my targeting script is still getting some polish... but have comms window, spinning timer... map is almost completely broken down into zones (need to finish that project). Lyren has a good map also I hear. Most important part about any zMUD map is getting it configured properly. My versions of Markus' map scripts have some additional options and efficiency improvements but don't have much testing done for stability yet. Lots of people around to help with zMUD and I'm always messing around and tinkering. Eventually going switch over to cMUD.

AFAIK spinning timer isn't doable on CMUD, something about it being a .dll plugin and CMUD doesn't support those? Not entirely sure. I'm on CMUD and would love spinning timer but wrote it off as not possible.

Remind me of this later, try and see what we can come up with.

I could give you something for comms and targeting for Mudlet. There's up to date maps floating around that are better than the one I'm using/made myself. I haven't been able to get a tic timer to work on Mudlet, and I have no clue what a spinning timer is so unclear if I could help with that either.
