Connection issues

Post by medina » Mon Oct 17, 2016 4:39 am

I've been some extremely annoying connection issues lately which strangely enough seems to be linked to a specific combination of one computer and one wifi.

When I try to connect on my main laptop connected to my home wifi, nothing happens and it is unable to connect for long periods of time. Then suddenly it connects and everything is fine. When I'm logged on I notice nothing of this, no disconnections or extra lag. But if I rent and reconnect, it's always the same problem and it can be everything from a few minutes to an hour before I can connect again.

If I try with a different computer on the same wifi I have no problems connecting. If I try with my main laptop on another wifi I have no problems connecting. I have tried disabling my firewall and noticed no difference.

Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be?

It could be a few things, network drivers, power settings, faulty adapter, conflicting wifi managers, a service failing to start, an IP address conflict, a corrupted profile or a virus.

What's your laptop model and OS?

It's a HP Elitebook 820 with windows 7.

Everything worked perfectly fine up until a week ago or so. Can't think of any changes made that would case the problem..

If it worked a week ago, something has changed with the software settings recently or your network card needs to be replaced.

Have you updated any software, run windows updates, or installed anything on your laptop in the last week?

If you aren't sure you could try loading a restore point from last week as a starting point and if that helps, work forward from there.

Well with WiFi there is one other thing that could have changed - what your neighbours are doing! Get yourself a copy of version 2 (3 and later versions moved away from being F.O.S.S.) of inSSIDer and have a look and see what other WiFi signals are nearby, you may see your RF usage is swamped by others...

There is no two ways about it - if you want the most solid (and high-speed) link to your modem/router (until someone trips over the cable  ) - use a wire!

Bad news is that after checking every single little thing, I've found no changes with the computer or the wifi in the last few weeks. I've also failed to locate any conflicts anywhere at all.

Good news is that it suddenly works fine again!

Thanks for all the suggestions! :)
