Question: how does max engage work?

I've been here so long I feel I should know :-(
It has something to do with weapon types and room types, but I don't know exactly.

Anyone have a nice laydown and maybe tips for practical use?

It’s been posted around on discord a couple times, so I’ll copy here. DB, whether the room is indoor or outdoor, and weapon types are the main factors, with abs and encumbrance (think the wiki has the encumbrance definition/calculation somewhere) being another.
Base max engage is based off of db
131+ is 6, 115+ is 7, below 115 is 9
that is then modified by your abs and your encumbrance
with a possibility of +6 or +3
if you have a bunch of abs and are very encumbered
if you're indoor it's modified -2
if you're a mob it's modified +4
once that's done you have your actual max engage value

now it goes through and counts up everyone engaged on you
mobs and fists count as 1
sblades count as 2
axes clubs lbades lances count as 4
everything else counts as 3
if your max engage value is >= sum of the weapons engaged on you then someone else can engage

so for example we showed that Mikhan had a base value of 6, so he was able to get 7 mobs on him

porka and I wielded halberds and byrg had an axe
if porka and I engaged first, byrg could hit

so the reason ds city heads look like they have shitty max engage is that a dodger hits with > 131 db so they're down to a number of 4. A trolloc with an axe gets on by spamming and only 1 mob will be able to assist
when you get bashed your db is going to be below 115 for sure so you're either getting +3 or +2 to your max engage number, which is almost always going to get someone else on you
