NEWBIE: New player statting guide for MC

Post by jebadiah » Tue Nov 30, 2021 11:51 pm

This will be a post for new players who are interested in playing a Male Channeler.

First things first, MCs have no pre-rolled stats.
What this means is you will have to roll a character until you get the stats you desire. A good place to start will be homelands.

https://wotmud.fandom.com/wiki/Homeland <- Here you will find the max stat totals for each homelands.

https://wotmud.fandom.com/wiki/Prerolled_stats <- This tells you what the available pre-rolled stats are for classes based on LS and DS.

https://nicndave.tripod.com/stats.html <- Plug in your homeland, and your desired stats and hit the 100,000 button a handful of times.

Now when rolling your MC what stats should you be looking for?
Pre-rolled stats for FC are 14 18 18 18 14, and this is a good place to start. However this is around a 1/2000 roll. Lets break this down a little further with what each stat will do for you.

Strength - Strength determines Warrior Pracs, The weapons you wield will be determined by your Strength stat, 1 point of Strength = the weight of the weapon you want to wield up to 17, at 17 Strength you are able to wield weapons that weigh 1 pound more than your stat. So 14 Strength has limited options in what your character can equip. The higher you can get this the more versatile your character can be. Strength also has an effect on damage rolls at level 15+. At 15 Strength your weapon is doing an additional 2d5-8 or 0 damage(if rolled below 0, it becomes 0), any extra damage is good. The formula for the extra damage is 2d(2nd digit of str value, 15 is 5, 16 is 6, up to 11 for 21)-8

Intelligence - This stat effects the % of your practices, The higher this is the more you will get from your limited practice sessions. You have a total of 195 practices at level 51. Each practice group (Warrior, Rogue, Hunter) uses a different amount of practices, for Male Channelers the costs for each practices are Warrior: 3 Rogue: 3 and Hunter: 2. From levels 2-30 you get 5 Practice sessions per level. The higher your Int the more you will get out of your limited sessions.

Willpower - Your total available SPS caps at level 30, and the total you end up with is based on your Willpower. I believe it also effects hunter practices in a small way, so the higher this is the better. Male Channelers are effected by a condition called Taint, since the male half of the true source was tainted by the dark one 3000 or so years ago. The more you channel, the more taint you accrue. However you get a bit of a safety net, Taint won't start building on your character until you channel below Good-Strong SPS. If you want to play a MC long term it will require some micromanagement.

Dexterity - Dex is your defensive stat. The higher this is the better PB (Parry Bonus) and DB (Dodge Bonus) your character will have. As we will find out when we move on to the next stat, All Channelers have a capped hp value of 280. This means that you want as much dex as you can possibly get.

DB - This is your ability to dodge hits, and bashes. Bashes are very dangerous to Channelers because a successful bash not only immobilizes your character, it also lowers your DB and PB because it causes your character to sit down for two rounds, furthermore a bashed opponent receives a damage multiplier of 1.3x so you will also take more damage. With your low HP - Bash is your worst enemy. The higher your dodge, the higher your chances are to not get bashed!

PB - This is your ability to deflect hits, be it with a shield or a two-handed weapon. It's another form of avoidance almost like dodge, however you can't parry bashes. On the other hand Parry takes less of a decrease while being bashed than dodge does which helps you avoid/mitigate damage while bashed.

Defense - This is your combined PB and DB. This stat you want to get as high as you can because taking ANY DAMAGE while weaving cancels the weave. Channelers are glass cannons in that you can channel for high damage, but if your weaves get canceled you're not outputting that damage.

Constitution - Con governs Warrior skill pracs, Total HP and encumbrance. As stated above ALL CHANNELERS ARE CAPPED AT 280 HP. What this means is that regardless of how high your Con is, you can't get more than the max of 280 hit points. It is possible to get lower than the maximum, so what we are looking for in Con is what do we need to get as close to 280 HP as we can without going over?

https://wotmud.fandom.com/wiki/Hit_points <- From this we can see the break point is around 14 con with a tiny bit of luck, or 13 con and you think you can hit the lottery twice.

So from all the information we've gathered so far you can make a decision on what stats to keep and what stats you want to reset. I personally am statting for a 15+ 16+ 18+ 18 14

15+ Str allows you a larger choice in the weapons you want to wield, and provides a small damage boost to the weapons you use.
16+ intellect will give you more Prac% in a class that has high Prac Costs
18+ Willpower will give you a larger SPS Pool, and allow you to micromanage your weaving better.
18 Dex is the max you can obtain when looking at homelands, and remember the higher your defenses the less chance to take damage that would interrupt your weaving.
14 Con gets your HP up to the cap with a little bit of luck. or 13 with a lucky rabbits foot and a horseshoe in your pockets.

So looking at the above stats you can get an idea of what homeland is best for your desired character. Reading the homeland link above we can see that our options are: Tarabon, Murandy, Altara, and Illian. If we scroll up to the D100 Modifier table we can see that these homelands offer our best chances when rolling for this class.

What about the Borderlands homelands? They have a maximum roll of 18 19 19 17 16!
You're right! Those sound like some amazing stats. Use any weapon you want, High intellect and willpower for those extra prac%, no-doubt with 16 con you'll hit that hp cap before level 30 even! However lets open up that stat tool again that I linked up top, and plug those stats in. You will find that the chances of rolling the max stats is over 1/100,000 rolls for the Borderlander homelands. You only gotta hit that once though right? Well, plug in the stats i have listed for the other homelands and you will find that rolling those minimum playable numbers is much easier achieved with the above homelands. You will find that you will have much more fun actually playing the game, than rolling for a character who lets face it, may not be long term due to the taint effect.

Good info. I'll echo you that WIL is very important for an MC, 18 is playable, but prefer 19 if possible.

And I also came to the same conclusion regarding Borderlands homeland, sounds kind of cool, but almost nearly impossible to high roll those stats, if I'm understanding the D100 modifiers correctly. And besides, 17 dexterity is borderline iffy for an MC.

Also anything over 14 CON is probably a bit of a waste due to the 280 hp cap.

Even though HP are capped, CON will also affect HP regen/TIC. Is it possible that a 17 CON even though capped at 280 HP would regen faster?

It does influence regen, details can be found here: https://wotmud.fandom.com/wiki/Hit_points

That said, it's hard to stat a good MC with higher than 14 con.
For channelers every stat matters.

Although I think fcs are playable at 18 wil, I think mcs must have 19 wil to have the biggest sp pool to channel most effectively without tainting.

I always thought it was 9 SPs difference. It's 7 SPs per level of wil.
