----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Basic Commands

Every action in WoTMUD is performed by typing commands into the command prompt and pressing Enter.

For example:

who

Displays every player currently online.

say Hello!

Speaks to everyone currently in the same room.

tell Bob Hello!

Sends a private message to another player anywhere in the world.

Most commands follow this simple format:

command target

Examples include:
look tree
get sword
wear cloak
wield dagger
drink skin
eat meat

Learning this basic structure will make understanding future commands much easier.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2. Moving Around the World

Movement is one of the most common things you'll do.

The six primary directions are:
north
south
east
west

These may also be shortened to:
n
s
e
w

Additional directions such as up and down are also commonly used.

Simply type the direction and press Enter.

Example:

n

Moves your character one room north.

As you explore, remember to pay attention to room descriptions and available exits. Many quests rely on observing your surroundings rather than simply following a map.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3. Looking and Examining

One of the most important habits a new player can develop is looking carefully at the world around them.

look

Displays the current room.

You can also look at specific objects:
look sign
look tree
look hive

Many quests hide clues inside room descriptions or objects that can be examined.

For even more detail, use:

examine object

Examining an item often reveals information that a normal look command does not. This is especially useful when identifying equipment or determining exactly what an object is.

When in doubt, look first.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4. Doors, Gates, and Hidden Passages

Not every path in WoTMUD is open. Many cities close their gates at night, and some areas are protected by doors that must be opened before you can continue.

Calling City Gates

Many city gates close during the evening.

If you arrive at a closed gate, simply type:

call

If someone is available inside, the gate will be opened for you.

Opening Doors

Some rooms contain doors that must be opened before you can pass through them.

The basic syntax is:

open doorname

For example:

open heavygrate

Once opened, travel through the exit as normal.

Many doors throughout the world have unique names, so pay attention to room descriptions if a passage appears to be blocked.

Closing Doors

Doors can also be closed.

close doorname

While this can occasionally be useful, it is generally not recommended to hide behind closed doors if hostile players or creatures are nearby. If someone closes or locks the door from the outside, you may find yourself trapped.

Opening Doors with Mudlet

If you use Mudlet with Adael's package installed, opening doors is even easier.

You can use built in shortcuts such as:

odn

Which means: open door north

Similar shortcuts exist for the other directions.

You can also type the full command directly:

open door north

If there is a visible door to the north, the client will automatically attempt to open it.

This may also be applicable without it. You can open door direction.

Hidden Doors

Not every door is immediately visible.

Some hidden passages require the Search skill before they can be found or opened. Some require very little Search, while others require considerably more.

Because Search is useful throughout the game, it is recommended that players eventually raise the skill to at least 50 once they have enough practice sessions available.

Hidden passages often lead to shortcuts, quest locations, or entirely new areas, making Search a valuable long term investment.
If you ever think there may be a door in a location you can usually type look and the direction and there will be an indicator, if not already in the description, that something is there. To use search you will then type search and the direction. So for example search down.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

5. Talking to Other Players

Communication is one of the most important parts of WoTMUD.

To speak with everyone in your current room:

say Hello!

To send a private message:

tell playername Hello!

To see who is currently online:

who

Don't be afraid to ask questions. The community has a long history of helping new players, and most people are happy to answer questions or point you in the right direction.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

6. Using the Help System

WoTMUD includes an extensive help system.

To search for information, type:

help command

For example:

help ride
help alias
help say
help practice

Whenever you encounter an unfamiliar command, checking the help file is usually the fastest way to learn how it works.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

7. Aliases and Useful Shortcuts

As you play, you'll quickly notice that some commands are used repeatedly.

Aliases allow you to create your own shortcuts.

Example:

alias x examine sword

Typing:

x

Will now perform:

examine sword

You can view every alias you've created by typing:

alias

Aliases are extremely useful for long or frequently used commands.

Repeating Commands

Typing:
!

repeats the previous command.

This is useful when performing the same action several times in a row.

Viewing Command History

To see previously entered commands:

history

This can be useful if you've forgotten exactly what you typed or want to repeat an earlier command.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

8. Equipment

Equipment plays a major role in keeping your character alive. Weapons determine how you fight, while armor provides protection against enemy attacks.

Viewing Your Equipment

To see everything your character currently has equipped, type:

equipment or eq

This will display every item you are currently wearing or wielding.

Wearing Equipment

To equip armor or clothing, use:

wear item

Example:

wear cloak
wear boots

If the item occupies a slot that is already in use, you may need to remove the current item first.

remove item

Example:

remove cloak

wear newcloak

Wielding Weapons

Weapons must be wielded before they can be used in combat.

wield weapon

Example:

wield dagger

If you are already wielding another weapon, remove it first.

remove weapon

Not every weapon belongs to the same weapon class. If you are unsure what type of weapon something is, examine it.

examine weapon

This can help determine which weapon skill it uses.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

9. Hunger and Thirst

Your character will become hungry and thirsty while traveling. Keeping food and water available is an important part of surviving longer journeys.

Eating

To eat food:

eat meat

Any edible food may be used with the eat command.

Drinking

Water is commonly carried in a waterskin.

To drink:

drink skin

Eventually your waterskin will become empty.

When that happens, refill it from an appropriate water source.

fill skin well

The command works with many different water sources throughout the world.

Remember to refill your waterskin whenever you have the opportunity. Running out of water far from civilization can quickly become a problem.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

10. Resting and Renting
Travel and combat gradually wear your character down. There are several ways to recover.

Resting

To recover while remaining alert:

rest

Resting restores your character more quickly than simply standing around.

Sleeping

Sleeping restores your character more effectively than resting.

sleep

However, sleeping leaves your character vulnerable. Only sleep in places where it is safe to do so, such as cities or inns.

Renting

Throughout the world you will find inns where you can safely log out.

Before renting a room, check the cost.

offer

If you decide to stay:

rent

Renting allows your character to safely leave the game. Staying for an extended period will also allow your character to return fully rested.

Some inns are intended for newer players and may eventually stop accepting higher level characters. As you progress, you'll naturally begin using larger inns throughout the world.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

11. Skills and Practice

As your character gains levels, you'll earn practice sessions that can be spent improving skills.

To see which skills are available to learn:

practice

WoTMUD divides skills into three general categories:
• Hunter
• Warrior
• Rogue

Different teachers specialize in different skill groups, so not every trainer can teach every skill.

As you gain experience, you'll visit these teachers to improve your abilities.

Practicing Individual Skills

To practice a specific skill:

practice ride

or

practice survival

Replace the skill name with whichever skill you wish to improve.

You can also type: practice again afterward to see your current skill levels.

Ride

Ride is one of the first skills many players improve.

Higher Ride levels provide significant benefits while using horses.

At lower levels, horses may refuse to follow commands.

As Ride improves, mounted travel and mounted combat become much more reliable.

For more detailed information:

help ride

Survival

Practicing Survival unlocks useful utility abilities.

One of the earliest benefits is the ability to butcher suitable corpses for food.

This makes Survival particularly valuable during long trips away from towns.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

12. Combat Basics

Combat is straightforward to begin learning.

To attack a target:

kill target or hit target

Example:

kill tree or hit tree

Both commands initiate combat.

Many new players begin practicing combat against weaker opponents before moving on to more dangerous enemies.

As your weapon skills improve, combat becomes faster, safer, and more effective.

Weapon Skills

Different weapons require different skills.

For example, a staff uses the Staves skill.

Training the correct weapon skill greatly improves your effectiveness in combat.

If you're uncertain which skill applies to a weapon, examine it first.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

13. Riding

Horses are one of the primary methods of travel throughout WoTMUD.

Before riding, you'll first need to take control of the horse.

lead horse

Once you're familiar with mounted travel and have trained Ride, horses become an essential part of exploring the world.

For more information: help ride

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

14. Survival and Butchering

Food can often be gathered directly from creatures you defeat.

After killing a suitable animal, wield a dagger (or you can simply put it on your belt and use it the same way) and use:

butcher corpse

Successful butchering produces meat that can be eaten later.

Example:

eat meat

Not every creature can be butchered, but learning Survival early makes gathering food much easier while traveling.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

15. Additional Tips

Explorer's Kits

Explorer's Kits contain useful supplies, including lanterns for dark areas. You can attain a free kit by typing “Tell Guardian Kit” in game. If you perish you will be able to get a new one with the same command.

When carrying a lantern:

hold light

When it is no longer needed:

remove light

Never hesitate to replace supplies before setting out on a long journey.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Don't Forget the Help Files

Whenever you're unsure how a command works, use:

help command

help topics

help

Almost every command in WoTMUD has a detailed help entry available.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Community

WoTMUD has a long established community, and experienced players are often happy to answer questions.
If you become stuck, don't hesitate to ask for help. The official forums and community resources contain a wealth of information that can help you continue your adventure.

Finally, make sure you consider using the crier quests to level. It is an easy and efficient way to get to level 30 without having to grind out xp.

You can find more information about that here: viewtopic.php?f=76&t=17338&p=148922#p148922

Re: New Player Guide

The automatic newbie quests have been updated.

The previous version had become fairly chaotic over time and often overwhelmed new players with too much information at once. Some of the guidance was outdated, certain portions no longer functioned correctly, and several sections had become unnecessary. The entire sequence has now been streamlined, with outdated content removed and the tutorial concluding in Whitebridge.

If you encounter any bugs, outdated information, or other issues while going through the quests, please let me know through in game mail or on Discord so I can address them.

A special thank you to Liena, who took the time to play through the entire tutorial and put together a thorough report detailing broken mechanics, outdated information, and areas that could be improved. We truly appreciate the time and effort that went into helping make the new player experience better.

Thanks,

-Soul
