@jomin:
1. throwing knives seem to last a while. they scratch like normal weapons. Spikes on the other hand you only got 1-2 throws, but this might have changed in the latest weapon changes.

2. Throwing weapons can be found in devon ride blacksmith. Knives can also be found on some thieves nearby, so knives shouldn't be a problem supply wise. I still recommend to use it as secondary weapon.

3. What you are referring to are bows i think, and "bow rooms". This is mobol controlled and have nothing to do with projectiles as a weapon skill (as far as im aware). You can however shoot people from afar.

I am a bit rusty in my WoTMUD knowledge but does that mean that bows and crossbow practices are useless - or are they usable, presumably as weapons types that can be used when not otherwise engaged on a target...?

I don't really know if bow practices would increase the damage of the bow. It would be reasonable to think so, but if this is the case it would most likely be melee damage. I have not seen crossbows in all my time here but it would presumeably be the same with those.
The mobol watch/bow room however have nothing to do with the pracs in those weapons.

In short, the answer to those questions would for all intents and purposes be yes the practices are useless and no there are no such weapons other than the rogue projectiles thrown ones.

Do NOT practice bows or crowbows. The only purpose of a bow it to be able to trigger mobol in a room.

I won't be doing any further posting on this subject as I reset away. The mechanism was just too convoluted - ie. not being able to throw at a target that I am engaged on, but someone else is buffing really limits opportunities for a simple minded person like me who has been spoiled by playing channelers. If you told me I could throw at anyone when I'm disengaged I could have gotten down with that ie. like blind or silence. I could have stayed disengaged or fled into and out of the room.

Additionally, the practice cost was fairly large. Perhaps I was just on a bad roll, but my bashing was really poor and I wonder if that had something to do with my sacrifices I had to make. My inspiration for this testing was a post by Hress on another forum. He may have pulled the ultimate practical joke, but he stated that it requires projectiles + palm + backstab to land criticals (I actually was able to land criticals though). I was down with projectiles and palm, but the backstab practices add up and make this a lot more feasible for rogues. That said, a level 51 human hunter really can practice a hell of a lot of things.

Throwing knives are available relatively close to Fal Dara if you have the search for it. They seemed to have a decent half-life from my experience since none of the one's I was using decayed from being thrown at mobs. I couldn't hit anything with any amount of defense so perhaps throwing spikes are just way, way better. Your mileage may vary. Good luck.
