the east and west is the row of shops where local merchants ply their trades.
The ceaseless banging of a smithy comes from the east, while the equally
unmistakeable sounds of a tavern come from the west.

Main Road
The hard stone road leads only south, toward the city gate, and north to the
towering walls of Fal Dara Keep. The streets are lined with farmers who have
come to seek shelter inside the city walls, and their belongings lie stacked
against the walls of the buildings to the east and west. This truly is rough
times for the folk of the borderlands.

Upon entering this tiny bakery, the first thing you realize is just how cold
it was outside... but certainly not here! Warmth and the wonderful smell of
fresh-made bread and other goods fills the air. You can't help but remember,
though, that you are in the borderlands, and the small selection of goods
available only makes that fact more clear. Still, everything in stock is
practical and useful both to travellers and citizens alike.

This is the main entrance to the Keep. Above you gleam the well-oiled spikes
of the heavy iron portcullis, while the great doors of the keep are thrown
open. Faint light shines down through the archer's slots overhead. The walls
are high, steep, and thoroughly unclimbable. The floor is as smooth as
cobblestone can be, worn down the passing of thousands of feet and hooves.

Center of the Courtyard
Across the courtyard before you stands the true Keep of Fal Dara. This is the
residence of Lord Agelmar, whose family has ruled this city for generations.
The courtyard stretches off to the sides. The Keep's stables are off to the
west, and the guard barracks oversee the courtyard from the eastern end.

Entrance Foyer
You have entered a large entry foyer. Functional tapestries, colorful
but simple, line the walls. Iron candelabra are evenly spaced between the
tapestries to provide an even light. Directly across from the main door of
the keep is a heavy wooden door, elegantly carved to signify its importance.

Across the courtyard before you stands the true Keep of Fal Dara. This is the

Eastern End of the Courtyard
Most of the courtyard stretches off to the west. This end of the yard has a
large apple tree growing along one of the walls, bringing a bit of nature
into this spartan keep. To the south lies the main barracks of the guard,
while one of the Keep's watchtowers stands proudly to the east.

In the Southeast Tower
This is one of the guard towers that stands watch over the town of Fal Dara.
Broad stairs lead up along the wall of the tower, allowing many men to rush
to the walls or into the courtyard to sally forth against their enemies. It
is dusty and chill, and rather barren.

This large, circular chamber gives a clear view of tthe southern half of the
city and it's environs. Far off to he south, the forest begins to grow
again. Arrow slits along the walls would afford archers clear shots into the
streets around the keep and into the courtyard.

You gaze out on an unobstructed view of the eastern half of the town of
Fal Dara from atop the keep's high wall. Beyond the town are scattered
stands of spruce and hemlock; the only trees able to survive the harsh
winters of this land. Beyond a rippling haze of heat marks the encroaching
blight. Beyond that one can just make out Tarwin's Gap. On the other side
of you is the inner courtyard of the keep, while in front and behind along the
wall one can enter the watchtowers.

Here on the upper floor of this tall watchtower you can gaze out north and
east through the narrow arrow slits upon the outer town and the surrounding
wilderness beyond. Scattered groves of hemlock and spruce dot the low
alpine grassland. A strange heat haze comes from further north, marking
the blight. Beyond that you can just make out Tarwin's Gap. On the other
side of the tower more slits give good cover fire to the keep's inner
courtyard. There is a hole in the north wall, where there was once a
murderhole, out of which you can fall into the road north of Fal Dara.

All around the road, you can see impenetrable forest, but to the west, by
the road, you can see a couple of burnt and smashed wagons by the road. To

You are standing among the smoldering remains of what was once probably a
merchant caravan. A pair of smashed wagons are here by the side of the road.
Looking around, you see no bodies lying around, but you get the feeling that
they were only recently cleared out - else the wagons would have been removed
also. There is no visible way that the bodies were taken away - you can't see
any tracks along the road, nor any paths among the thickset trees. The road
continues east and west.

You can definitely smell burnt wood coming from the east, from what seems
to be a couple of abandoned wagons. Looking around, you see only
impenetrable forest all around the road, and a watch tower looming up over
the trees to the north. The old, worn road continues east and west here,
but to the east, past the wagons, it seems to bend south.

Along the Cliff
You come up against a granite cliff as you clear the trees. You look closer at
the cliff, and realize that you never noticed it because it is not much higher

you can't see any way past the cliff, and to the east, the trees almost merge
with the cliff, forming an impassable barrier.

As you break out of the trees, you come right up against a granite cliff that
rises out of the ground. To the east and north, you can see the open forest
continuing, and to the south, you can see a hole in the granite cliff - it
looks an awful lot like a cave.

This forest is not quite as thick as it seemed from the road. There is lots
of open space here, between the many thick trees around you. To the north,

Opening in the Forest
The trees here seem to be pretty openly spaced, and you can move more or less
