Newbie question on overspam

Post by barb » Thu Dec 10, 2020 7:52 pm

in this case im purposefully overspamming because im getting pk'd while i KNOW my link is terrible, hoping that if i overspam then even if my internet lags then the command will still go through. Does that actually work? i cant tell from this instance if thats what happened or if katanja was following dukug and opened the door while dukug walked through. So two questions here really, 1) does overspamming help in case of a bad connection? and 2) can one person opening the door while the other walks through get through a spam?

Don't take this as gospel truth, I am just a casual PKer. If other people contradict me they are probably right lol.

I don't think I have ever successfully kept a door closed to prevent an person who is not engaged from being able to go through it. Even when they are solo and just have the open door and direction commands stacked. I would avoid any but the most buff city head doors when using them to avoid getting killed especially by a remort master (i.e. throneroom in caem is pretty safe when you are crit).

Also I have never seen a group get split by a closing door, I do not think it is possible.

Typically spamming the door works cause you are keeping people in not out. This allows you to engage them and close door during their fleelag.

doors are a funny thing, someone else can likely explain it better - but as far as I understand it depends on who logged on first. You can sometimes keep someone out of a door somewhat successfully by spamming it shut. In this case, yes K-name was spamming the door open while Dukug was spamming north, but if Dukug was alone you could spam the door closed and he wouldn't be able to get in, unless there is lag on your end and his 2 commands(open door, direction) go through before your 1 command(close door).

So to your questions, you can theoretically keep someone out of a door by spamming it closed and yes two people can work together to get through the doorspam, with one spamming open and the other spamming the direction, but it has something to do with order of log in afaik. So generally not a good idea to go inside a door vs overwhelming odds. What you can do is spam the door closed, then hit some "south" commands, since Dukug is spamming north and Katanja is spamming open door, no one is actually doing "k human", so in some cases you have a chance to just walk out while they walk in, isn't super reliable but works every now and again.

Iria's login comment I think would be described as - in what order does the mud process commands received at the "same" time. At the end of the pulse is the door opening or closing. And remember computer smart person who replies - the forums will log you out really quickly!

it's something like

a opens door;
b closes door;
c opens door;

(door is open, flee successful)

or else

a opens door;
b opens door;
c closes door;

(door is closed, flee fail)

Login order makes sense. It depends on how the MUD maintains the state of players internally. If it’s by a list and players are added to the end as they login, then the player that logged in last will be favored. If newer players get put in the front of the list, then the older players will be favored in the situation.

Being towards the front and end both have advantages. Depends on order of players being updated

Getting back to the original question on overspam, you generally don't want to overspam by more than a few pulses. It really hinders your ability to respond to a changing situation, especially with a bad link. My own way of making sure I don't get too far ahead of myself is I throw in a separate command (like 'where') to see how far ahead of myself I am as I continue spamming.

However, if you are stuck in overspam, I believe you can get out of it by quickly dropping link and reconnecting.
