I was thinking I should have let the bash on Rig run there, but looking at the log I'm pretty sure he was going to beat me hands down.
If he hadn't run the bash I would have died regardless.

I think, the flee mechanism saved you. You were bashed into unconsciousness. (Bash does 1 dmg) So theoretically it put you to 0 hps. Then, (and I am only guessing) at mob-pulse? you lost another single hps. Putting you to -1 hps. And instead of staying in an unconscious state and continuing to lose 1 hps per mob-pulse, leading to -4 and death. Your flee went through, forcing you into a sitting position rather than unconscious which stopped the unconscious Hps loss penalty.
