More sparry wouldn't have helped either - if he's pulling 316 defense (141 DB, 175 PB) defense before the bash that would be about 200 per person (~140 DB, ~60 PB due to split). Bash reduces DB by 75% and PB by 25%, so at that point he's got about 80 defense (35 DB, 45 PB) so he's got no chance of parrying.

To make matters worse, because PB is split 3 ways and then reduced by 25%, his PB while bashed is really (total PB * 0.33 * 0.75) or 25% of his unbashed, unsplit PB. So to even get 1 more PB while bashed and split like that, he has to add 4 stat PB. Even with 99 sparry you're not going to get an appreciable increase in defense when you have that much stacked against you.

to be a couple of abandoned wagons. Looking around, you see only
impenetrable forest all around the road, and a watch tower looming up over

but to the east, past the wagons, it seems to bend south.

Open Forest
You would have no problem hiding people in this forest, you realize as you
walk around. There is no way anyone can see you from the road, through the
impenetrable trees to the north, but you can spy on the road from the entrance
to this area. To the west and south, you can see more open forest, where you
can walk freely. You decide that this place would be a great place to hide an
ambushing party... You can see a lot of disturbed dirt on the ground.

Among the other trees an enourmous one stretches up towards the sky. Its
stout roots seem to push all the other trees away from it so that they
alone can deplete the ground of what little nourishment is left. Arm-like
branches reach out over the other trees. Some of the lower ones have
corpses hanging in them. Exits are east, north and south into the forest.
