So, I have recently decided that a good way for me to exercise is to embrace my nerd and let him have fun while I exercise. So I am practicing sword basics and was wondering if any of yall did this or were part of a HEMA group.

I meet with an ARMA group for awhile in college, and went to some SCA meetings as well. ARMA was more interesting.

I am doing footwork exercises and guard stances. Really basic stuff for now.

There's a group near where I live, but from what I understand it's hideously expensive. Need to acquire protective gear and at some point you're expected to buy your own sword, which is like 800 euros. Since I have a worse than poor track record of sticking with sports, I decided not to.

I want to try one of the NYC classes. It looks like Longsword is the first beginner sword class, then eventually you move up to a side-sword and buckler. There looks to be upcoming spears and staves eventually too!
The beginner class here is $10 to try.

So for now I dont have the safety gear because I am just doing exercises (solo) not drills (i.e. sparring).
I have a wooden long sword and am mostly practicing foot work and guards.

I've always fancied having a stab at it, but unless I travel to London (ew) there's really nowhere in my city that does it.
Stab pun totally intended.

It is what I imagine the "colossal sword with an iron pommel" looks like.
