How should I come back?

Post by Abunar » Thu May 25, 2017 4:29 am

Hi my WoTmud family.

I still love you all and the text still comes up in dreams late at night.

I have recently lent a neighbour my books and she is luving them - this has resulted in my rereading the last few and the good bits from earlier novels.

So want to come back but I need help with working out why I get depressed.

Been trying to work out my problems - my best alt has always been Abunar - a perfectly statted warrior, who was one of the initial SIG (Seanchan Imperial Guard.) Now Seandar was not my first fun, I played LS and DS before I ventured to Seandar. There I found a place where I could (over time) master the limited zones that were ours. The SIG perfected how to hit all the smobs available on Seandar, not for our own benefit (because we were all almost perfectly dressed) but for the benefit of newbs or PKRs who needed to redress. At this time I am pretty sure Seanchan corpses were providing more eq to LS and DS than their own smobbing trips.

Now in a similar way my trolloc hunter was always a smobber (but my rogue was a bank for a longtime before DS had its own bank, if someone needed 100s of gold to get something then my alt would hand it over, I was a master of moving between towns and selling/buying things), and my most recent cared about LS alt was also a smobber.

I mostly like exploring, doing things that take time, helping anyone who asks for it, and am also a grinder (I got one of the most useless alts I ever came across (the SIG chest, before we had a chest, Stor as in storage) to level 51 just because I liked a challenge. I am not really into winning, I get no true joy out of being the best or from beating someone. Mind you I do enjoy working out how to kill a smob with only a character or two (then farming it for the challenge, because it is never easy.) Some of my best times on the mud was leading groups into IoMM to kill smobs for very little benefit (not like we could use the angreals) it was the difficulty and challenge.

BUT almost all my fun can be destroyed by a master PKR - and they do not just destroy the adventure I was on, but force me to go back and get dressed again. Oh sure I have met Pkrs who once they killed me and I tried to get back to my corpse did not kill my naked self, but those nice people are few and far between. I just had a thought, even though it is one of the adverts YOU ARE NEVER SAFE, maybe having open PK zones and on or off PK triggers (let us say it takes an hour or two to change) might be good????

Ok I am dribbling, I have alts on all sides of all classes all with at least one reroll waiting (most maxed out) - where should I return to? Having read a bit about the type of player I am, what clan, race, theme suggestions can anyone give?

The only really clanned alt I have had is Abunar and he got clanned because we made a player run clan that got real (then his continent and motivation got destroyed.) I know people that have had multiple secret clan characters but at the same time I know decades long players who have never even gotten one secret clan character. I have helped a newb who within months ended up head of the Warders guild - he was a real newb who we helped and somehow his arrogance allowed him to achieve this .... .

Help me find a character and place to play in the mud, one where I get to help, explore, protect and I guess hold a responsible position. Any idea?

Thanks in advance
Abunar/Xinth/Fragger (even putting those names together is consider wrong :(

PS - let the flaming begin.

PPS - I should really mention that I have an RP hunter who could easily be a WB, but he was never into PK - nothing in the novels ever suggested that wolves were mostly into PK - Elyas (a WARDER) wasn't even into the wolf dream - my oldest alt is an explorer hunter that should have been offered a WB spot over a decade ago (even though I am not sure he has a PK scalp) ...

As far as I know/remember - most clans will accept people who are not big fans of PK, but are willing to participate. Some require more frequent participation. Best to ask members of each clan you might be interested in.

Seanchan is...dead..ish? So I wouldn't suggest playing that side. Unless there are some hardcore SS players who still spend lonely days in Falme and could use/want the company.

Again, AFAIK, there are plenty of DSers who smob frequently, especially after PK sessions that went horribly wrong. A lot of those are rogues who could use/wouldn't mind a partner to stab some smobs in the face.

On LS, well..take your pick, pretty much everyone PKs/smobs/exploring maybe not so much, but there are new players learning the zones/helping people is always a needed "skill" on LS...

Some suggestions - Illuminators (duh! ), Gleeman (Meiffart is looking for victims at the moment), Legion of Unity, Borderlands clans, or maybe even some of the less active/inactive clans (provided you can get through the applicaiton process somehow) so you bring some life back into them.

I've been away recently so all this might be bad info, FYI.

And welcome back :)

I'd say LS and in particular look for clans like Legion, Valon and Wall Guard. Those aren't that hard to get into, don't get into conflicts all that much and have a fair few smobbers among them.

The only downside for Valon is that if there happens to be CoL smobbing, you may not be able to join them.

I am really enjoying being in Legion. Either people remembered this old name or just me having the "Rhyagelle to the Legion" title when I was an applicant was good enough to get people to ask me to join them. Just 2 weeks of being a Legion app, I had smobbed more than in the years before.

There's plenty of Wall Guard who enjoy smobbing too.

On the upside, you can now get randi qps from smobbing. It's not as much as pking, but at least it's no longer nothing. I've also noticed that with the plethora of quests around, you can probably get 150 qps from questing on LS, easily, without ever having to pk.

I agree that you might want to start out on LS or DS as you come back, because by and large SS is dead. Starting back at SS might blunt your interest.

As far as clans, Winged Guard is a solid clan that pks, smobs, and RPs quite extensively. Valon Guard are becoming very active, so there is a good place that, due to Tower involvement, has some strong RP. I am certainly a little biased, but Lancers are rather fun, and if you have interest in learning pk, Borderland clans are a great place to learn!

From one former SIG to another, I would recommend the Winged Guard based on personal experience. I've never been involved with the Wall Guard, but I have every reason to think they might also suit you.

Otherwise, as Kordin said, Gleeman and Illuminators are actively recruiting if heavy roleplay is more your thing.

Drol (*hugs* brother I hope life is being fantastic) you got me thinking of the winged guard when I last thought of coming back then I got slaughtered by a killer in Mayene. At least the Tear dudes just tried to kill me but let me live once the point of death happened. I got sulky because it takes a lot of effort to reequip and I hadn't even gotten to full excellence before dying.

Cashel tempted me with alts into the Legion a few times but I was mostly playing SS, maybe I should give the Legion a go.

Is there a way to find out what I have and have not done in my attempt to join the Dragonsworn? I liked the not having to talk to anyone entrance exam, but lost track right at the end (besides the alt was not an mc ... but I do have 2 lovely mcs that I really would like to use more often ... the Wall Guard tempts me in this direction.)

Dragonsworn, Valon, Winged Guard, and Wall Guard all are pretty active and good starting clans.
Lancers of course always have a rotating roster of pkers if you want that to be your thing. Cav has some active people, but not nearly as much as Lancers.
Good luck and welcome back.

I wish I could join a pk clan but the thing is I really do not like winning.

My ego is not remotely linked to my skills in this game. If I were to have a tower alt she would be brown. My fav alts are those with insane def and ridiculous search - I like an alt with 99 search who can open a door that wiil take a lot of time for someone to find them in.

I am not really sure what I want, it is why I am asking.

I suck at pk, but I will stand there and protect you until we both die. I worship a master smobber who will drag me around for hours killing smobs (there are some fcs that I truly worship their skills, they drag me around and just order me to do things, which I do) maybe I should just become a warder to a smobbing fc? any smobbing fc out there need a warder?

If the imms are interested I could help make a newbie type clan - I really have spent most of my time on the mud either helping youngins or dressing dead ones.

All you Masters who have mastered their clan, who has worked out all the best ways to do things - then good on you - I am not you. You will master your clan and then move onto the next one, you will collect master alts like I collect rare equipment. Not that the eq will help me, I just get it for collecting sake. You on the otherhand take up a space or hog an area in a clan - if you have a master alt in 5 clans, wtf are you really worth when it comes to day to day mudding? If you have an alt in 5 secret clans then I firetrucking hate you - seriously you are disgusting. There is a certain level of skill and a certain level of 'people I know' that allows you to do have anything you like, whilst a committed played is still waiting to get admitted to the first level of a clan.
