Not to be a nit-picking bureaucrat, um, err, well perhaps I will take on that role: are those images copyrighted and thus reproducing them on something without the relevant licensing a naughty thing to do? (Or maybe that will only really be an issue if the item were to be bought/sold.)

I think you can use the chapter ornaments so long as it's not something you're selling. I saw a reference somewhere, but this is the only one I found on short notice, and it's old. http://wotfaq.dragonmount.com/node/7

I actually looked into this when I did my website. The Wheel of Time chapter icons can be used on the web or in printed publications, even if you're making a profit. (If they are Wheel of Time related projects) They can't be used on consumer goods commercially.

Personal projects are A-okay!

Copyright and trademarks protect commercial goods,I.e. you cannot profit off works or symbols that are protected by a copyright or a trademark. This doesn't fall under either. In fact, I don't think he could even be liable because there isn't federal jurisdiction over it unless it's sold through interstate commerce.
