Tip of your skiis

watching american news i came across this curious expression. I'm really curious if anyone knows the origin of it? Or can explain to me what it has to do with skiis.
Let me start by saying that I'm Norwegian, and with that comes a relationship to skiis. Born with skiis on our feet as we say here. So the expression to get too far ahead of the tip of your skiis doesn't make much sense to me. I get that its the same as biting more than you can chew etc, I'm more interested in the expression itself. Just because getting "ahead of the tip of your skiis" or something (i forget what the exact exspression is) is physically impossible for most ski types, because your feet is usually stuck to the middle of your skiis. The closest explanation i can think of is that its something to do with overbalance, and falling on your face if you dont keep your balance. Its curious
