watching american news i came across this curious expression. I'm really curious if anyone knows the origin of it? Or can explain to me what it has to do with skiis.
Let me start by saying that I'm Norwegian, and with that comes a relationship to skiis. Born with skiis on our feet as we say here. So the expression to get too far ahead of the tip of your skiis doesn't make much sense to me. I get that its the same as biting more than you can chew etc, I'm more interested in the expression itself. Just because getting "ahead of the tip of your skiis" or something (i forget what the exact exspression is) is physically impossible for most ski types, because your feet is usually stuck to the middle of your skiis. The closest explanation i can think of is that its something to do with overbalance, and falling on your face if you dont keep your balance. Its curious
Tip of your skiis
Re: Tip of your skiis
Probably someone trying to be clever, or old and obscure. I've never heard it before, but also grew up in the south where we probably have plenty of our own really dumb sayings.

This is the closest thing I could find about its origins:

Re: Tip of your skiis
Cool, thats a good resource. "if you get over the front of your skis you're leaning forward too much being too eager combined with inexperience and it's going to cause you to get off balance and possibly crash" is a likely explanation of the origin of the expression, so its to do with balance. I guess I was right to be confused about the tip of the skiis as well as the proper expression seems to be "out over your skiis"
