I get it when bookishness and/or realism have to take a back seat to game mechanics, balance, coding; but I can't vote for a non-WoT pokey weapon that slashes.

I think for the intent of the weapon a kukri type is more accurate than a sai (though I understand the nostalgic value of the sai). Kukri are inwardly curved knives intended for slashing, so something like:

A pair of maple handled kukri 
or if we want to keep the word kukri out of it:

A pair of inwardly curved blades

Yeah, plus I think if we do that, we're just setting ourselves up for a ton of bug reports:

You stop using a small leather sheath.
You put a small purse on your belt.

That would just look weird without "a" or "an" and people would surely end up reporting that as a bug or typo.
