3-4 of us went to middle school and high school in Chiang Rai, up in the north. I bought the first four WoT books on a trip to Chiang Mai around Christmas 2001, found the mud about 4 months later. Both are fun cities, and northern food is really tasty (papaya salad is the signature dish.) Send me a PM if you think you'll make it up to Chiang Rai, and I might be able to hook you up with a tour guide (my dad.) He loves showing people around.

For the beach, it kind of depends what you want. Hua Hin is where I spent the most time. Famous as the beach vacation spot for Thais and, particularly, the king. Not as much of a party scene as somewhere like Phuket or Pattaya.

Avoid Phuket, I spent 3 months there training at a gym. The training part was great, but generally Phuket is a bit of a ruined paradise.

I do a lot of writing about that part of the world - some interesting things to look up:

Chiang Mai is supposed to be great, lots to see and do. (including elephants!http://www.elephantnaturepark.org/ (but don't go on the 'tourist rides'))
Umphang is stunning if you want to go off the beaten path - http://www.activethailand.com/trekking/umphang-trekking
Krabi is also beautiful and worth a visit.
Go to Chatuchak market in Bangkok - https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Attractio ... ngkok.html

If you go to Krabi then take the ferry to Koh Jum / Koh Pu, total chillout zone - its a place to do nothing for a while... :)

But otherwise agree with Mangler, Phuket / Railay Bay etc... are too touristified though you can still find some nice spots e.g. Karon beech on Phuket.

Have fun! I would so love to sample thai food there! I know the Thai food in the USA has been adapted for Americans. I haven't seen you around lately, Kitiaria. What have you been up to lately?
