Re: Login
It is the same for all games. Wotmud is more limited in the real estate you get to explain things. But pretty much all games you need to spend time to learn what all the things mean.
Re: Login
The wiki on homelands doesn't actually tell anyone what to pick for statting either. Like they all look like fancy stats, but there could be some guidance on:
Pick x homeland if you want a quick 19 19
Pick y or z homeland if you want high mentals etc, but get ready to stat a long time.
And so on. (And I don't know enough about statting to update it

It’s fascinating. Some of you are so against any kind or change it genuinely confuses me. I vaguely remember the name Treach so I know you’re an experienced player. Or maybe I’m thinking of someone else.
Anyway, that’s a poor stand to take. It’s not the same for all games. And more importantly we’re a little text based game based on a series that ended years ago now. Two negatives in my mind.
We may see a surge when this show comes out, if it’s any good. Any edge helps and anything that we can use to guide incoming players helps. It’s different times.
Most of us, myself included, couldn’t be bothered to learn as I did when I started.

Re: Login
I don't think the mud has changed enough.
But if the kid can't get over using passphrase instead of password, then no amount of simplification in the login process is going to work.
And for homeland there is probably two different types of people:
People who read the books and will look at homelands like two rivers and tar valon.
People who don't read the books and I guess just pick a random one...

New people shouldn't have to choose between 17 homelands which have an effectively permanent stats effect on their character. I know you can get a homeland change eventually, but that is generally years down the line for people.
The guide Hasp wrote is definitely appreciated, as is the wiki, but generally imo we don't want people having to go to outside forums/websites just to make a character. It might sound silly, but that's exactly where people lose focus / get distracted / decide they feel overwhelmed (gee if I already have to hit the wiki just to make a character...) / etc.
At the very least I'd suggest adding something like " -- SUGGESTED FOR NEW WARRIORS" next to the appropriate homelands so people know what the best ones are for a given class without having to pore over a table of numbers on the wiki.
I think that is more or less it yeah. Group 1 will potentially be unhappy with their choice once they learn a little more. Yeah, "make a new character" but I feel like a lot of people get attached to the one they just spent all that time on. It's not really like a Civ game where you can just restart and try a new strat. Maybe that's just me.
Group 2 gets no benefit either because they probably want to pick a homeland for RP reasons.
That all said, the way the trolloc stocks are done is pretty good imo. It is apparently obvious that a "bear" or "boar" would make a good warrior while a "wolfish" one might make a better rogue or hunter, leaving "ram" to fit in between.
e: in general I think the newbie process has improved a lot in the last couple years. The exp trainers and prerolled stats makes it much easier to jump into.
