A Rebirth

Post by Voices of the Wheel » Sat Feb 10, 2018 11:20 am

The night air was cool and brisk. The little ogier ran through the trees, stifling giggles and laughter. He knew if he was caught, he'd be in for a lecture. He was putting a long handle on his axe, but he didn't care. At 30, he should be in bed at this hour, but the forest called to him. He couldn't explain it and honestly, he didn't want to.

The path ahead of him was dappled with moonlight filtering through the trees, the shadows deep and dark. Suddenly, something caught his eye. He slowed to look. He'd been down this path many times during the daylight, but something about the way the shadows fell seemed to highlight something he'd never seen before. Pushing through the dense foliage, he stumbled through to the other side. Gasping, he stood still, staring in wonder.

"It's been closed for decades. The rangers left and let it fall into disuse. Why open up old wounds? Would they even come back?" an Ogier woman asked, a touch of irritation in her voice.

"They will return," one of the Elders rumbled. "We must believe they will, if we do what must be done."

The Council had been in session for 2 years, 5 months, 2 weeks, and 3 days. Though this discussion was hastier than most, they were close to making a decision. Despite concerns, it seemed most of the Ogier in Stedding Tsochan were in agreement. The Tree Top City should be repaired and the rangers invited back. It would take a lot of hard work, but the thought of their human kin returning brought a touch of excitement to many.

The flow of traffic had not ceased all day. The path had been widened leading to the Great Tree, and rangers had been coming and going all day, by foot, by horse, and even by coach. For the first time in decades, Tree Top City was bustling with life. The little ogier hid amongst the trees, gazing in awe at the humans passing in and out of the bark of the humongous tree. It was the most exciting thing he'd ever seen in his short 35 years, and he felt a thrill of pride knowing it was all because he put a long handle on his axe that fateful night.
