Quarterly Quest Mobs Darkside (And a Contest)
Posted: Mon Jun 01, 2026 4:23 pm
Darkside is now getting its own version of the quarterly quests.
Beginning today, Darkside players will have access to a new quest mob named Rank. Rank can be found west and north of Blarg in the Ruined Keep. I would strongly recommend that Lightsiders leave him alone. He does not aggro and he does not assist, so there is no opportunity to use him for your own purposes. If, however, you decide to attack him, he will respond in kind.
For now, Darkside players can earn up to 50 quest points per quarter (for a total of 200 per year) through these quests. Lightside currently has access to more, but only because this remains in a testing phase. I expect there will be adjustments along the way as I gather feedback, monitor participation, and determine what works best.
Once this has settled and with the approval of the 104s, I intend to increase the rewards and bring them more in line with what is available on the other side. Until then, bear with me and help me refine it. These are not repeatable. You can do them on separate characters but never on the same. You have to wait for the next quest drop in the new quarter. Keep that in mind.
Darkside has traditionally been home to some of our most experienced players and strongest PKers. Because of that, these quests are naturally a bit different. You will be expected to venture into the Southlands, hunt specific targets, and complete objectives that are far more focused on conflict than their Lightside counterparts.
The clues are sparse but direct. I have deliberately avoided burying objectives behind obscure riddles or convoluted mechanics. If a location is mentioned, go there. Look around. In most cases, you are looking for something that did not exist before. The challenge is not deciphering the clue. The challenge is completing what comes after.
Some of these targets also have a chance to narrate that they are under attack. Whether that becomes a problem is entirely up to you.
As an additional incentive, several of the patrols associated with these quests have a chance to load vials, strength teas, or occasionally both. The percentages are intended to be rewarding without becoming excessive.
Nothing created for these quests can be stabbed. Most targets will require at least two players to defeat, while a few may require more.
The goal here is not simply to hand out quest points. The goal is to create reasons for Darkside players to get out into the world, work together, and occasionally find themselves at odds with someone else. Darkside has always been at its best when players are actively hunting, raiding, exploring, and creating conflict. These quests are designed to encourage exactly that.
For those Lightsiders already considering farming these mobs for profit, our traditional "bad guys," I would strongly recommend against it. The mobs were designed with that possibility in mind. Most of these patrols warrant within the territories they operate, and I suspect you will find the risk outweighs whatever reward you think may be waiting for you. I.E They will kill you.
As with the Lightside release, we will be running a completion contest tied to these quests. I will be keeping an eye on progress and rewards will be distributed as quickly as possible once the requirements have been met.
Prizes:
1st Place: Heron of your choice
2nd Place: Rare of your choice
3rd Place: Three potion pouches of your choice
If you encounter bugs, issues, or have suggestions that are genuinely useful, please reach out to me through the WoTMUD Discord. I regularly offer bounties to players who help identify problems and improve things.
Help me help you.
That said, the same warning applies here as it did with the Lightside release. If this is exploited, abused, or intentionally manipulated, it will be removed. A great deal of time goes into creating and maintaining things like this. It exists for the benefit of the playerbase as a whole, and I would prefer to spend my time building new content rather than policing people who are determined to break it.
Finally, I have not forgotten about the larger plans I have mentioned for Darkside.
I would still like to create something similar in spirit to the Cake smob, along with several other projects that have been rattling around my brain for some time. The game moves forward through new ideas, new goals, and new reasons for people to log in and do something. That applies to Darkside just as much as it does anywhere else.
We are volunteers, however, and these things take time. Progress is rarely as fast as any of us would like, but progress is still being made. Quite a few immortals have things planned and up their sleeves. Be patient and thanks for playing.
For now, get out there, see what you can find, spread the word, and most importantly, have fun.

P.S Make sure you wait for him to stop speaking before handing him the next item. He will indicate when he's done.
