Code updates: following while in combat, and newbie defaults

Post by Aureus » Tue Aug 16, 2022 10:50 pm

As of reboot tonight, the following code changes are live:
  • You can no longer follow someone who is trying to kill you, or who you are trying to kill.
    • This should fix the weird "I attacked a rat, but ended up faced-off on someone else in the group" style bugs. How this happened was:
      1. Ingtar will attack a raven following him
      2. This causes the raven to unfollow him
      3. The raven will then re-follow him due to its specproc, while they are still in combat
      4. Zun will try to assist Ingtar by attacking the raven
      5. However, because the raven is already buffing Ingtar, and Ingtar is buffing the raven (both "buffing" 1 combatant), faceoff will prefer the group leader as the next "available" combatant and put Zun into combat with Ingtar instead of the raven.
      6. Comedy and/or chaos ensues (bonus points if one of them is clanned and this happens near other loyal mobs like city guards that will also decide to jump in on the fun to protect their ally)
  • New players will have some better defaults:
    • They have color on by default
    • They have all communication channels on by default (so they hear narrates and chats)
    • They have communications echo on by default
    • They can use "chat" at level 1, but not narrate until level 4.
    • The messages when you can't narrate due to level are cleaned up to encourage using chat.
    • Have obj and horse spam protection on by default (so they see "A thing is here. [2]" instead of each item on its own line)
    • Newbie MCs are no longer incog, since you can't see class anyway.
    • Newbies won't see extraneous login messages about the 10+ year old new rent system, holiday messages, etc. that just add more text to an already large-amount-of-text for people unfamiliar with a MUD.
