The heavier stones gravitate towards the center of the sieve.

Search what sieve?
Happened to me 5x in a row (and then I had no buckets left) - is this intended and it was just that there were no gems to find or? It seems like something went weird. At the washing spot in Illian.

it happens when the sieve is in the wrong spot. it needs to be in your inventory for the first part to work, and then you need to drop it to search them (then pick it back up after searching to do another bucket).
it breifly explains it in the tutorial (A prospector says 'SEARCH the SIEVE to see if there are any raw gemstones.' A prospector says 'Don't forget to drop it, because holding it with one hand is a bit too much.') but its not super intuitive to use and you lose out on the gems if you just keep going.
