Upon visiting the grand master in Tarendelle and trying to initiate his mobol for how to join and the associated cost ("I wish to join your guild"), he would not respond. I took a chance and gave him his 160gc fee (which I just happened to know anyways), and he then marked me as apprenticed and triggered his acceptance mobol.

There's 2 variations: "I wish to join your guild" for the actual making of weapons and eq and "I wish to join your crafting guild" for the supplier guilds. The Tarendrelle one being a supplier guild (smelting), you should've used the other phrase.
