Class Log - Ethics of Healing

All participants have been awarded using the in-game mobol. Strictly posting for the record.

In the Classroom
A board of black slate hangs on the wall near the door, suggesting this room is used as a classroom. The room is plain and windowless and has enough place to seat thirty students. A dais with a desk sits at the front of the room, where the Aes Sedai or Accepted teaching the class can sit.
Melosa Beshar, Accepted and Apprentice to the Green Ajah is standing here.
A young girl in a plain white dress stands here.
A haughty young woman strides by practicing Aes Sedai serenity.

Melosa closes the door.

Melosa opens the door.

Melosa leaves west.

Vala has arrived from the west.

Vala curtseys before Ashlynn.

Vala stops using a brass storm lantern.

Vala puts a brass storm lantern in an oilskin bag.

Maddy has arrived from the west.

Melosa has arrived from the west.

Melosa curtseys before Ashlynn.

Maddy curtseys before Ashlynn.

Melosa closes the door.

Ashlynn senses Melosa is channeling saidar.

Melosa fails to pull together whatever flows she was trying to weave.

Ashlynn senses Vala connecting to the True Source.

Ashlynn senses Vala is channeling saidar.

Someone knocks on the door from the other side.

Ashlynn opens the door.

Arelis has arrived from the west.

Ashlynn closes the door.

Ashlynn senses Vala is channeling saidar.

Arelis curtseys before Ashlynn.

Arelis smiles at you as she scurries towards the back of the room.

Maddy quietly slides into a seat at the back of the classroom pulling out her notebook and pen.

The door is opened from the other side.

Lona has arrived from the west.

Lona lowers into a curtsy with head bowed.

Vala closes the door.

Lona eats a mutton shank.

Maddy stops using a water skin.

Lona moves silently to a seat on the side.

Maddy drinks water from a water skin.

Melosa takes a seat near the front of the chamber.

Arelis get her notepad and quill from a shoulder bag.

Maddy puts a water skin in an embroidered, cotton shoulder bag.

Vala gets a water skin from an oilskin bag.

Vala drinks water from a water skin.

Arelis stops using a leather water flask.

Vala gets a strange fruit from an oilskin bag.

Vala eats a strange fruit.

Melosa gets an inkpot from a small purse.

Ashlynn walks up to a chalkboard and begins to write an outline. "Part 1: Ascertain the student's knowledge on the subject".

Arelis nudges Melosa suggestively with her elbow.

Arelis says 'can you share your ink Melosa?'

Ashlynn continues writing on the board. "Part 2: Theory of Ethics".

Melosa chews on her quill pen before scribbling.

Melosa winks at Arelis.

Maddy digs around in her bag, pulling out her inkpot and blotter, setting them firmly on the desk in front of her.

Ashlynn finishes writing with an expert stroke. "Part 3: Examples of situations where one has to apply Ethics."

The elemental staff held by Arelis dissipates.

Ashlynn turns around, and looks over the class.

Melosa leans over and places her inkpot on Arelis' desk.

Lona pulls out a herb stained notebook and quill made of willow root along with ink well. Uncapping it she readies herself to take notes.

Arelis thanks Melosa heartily.

Ashlynn says 'Good evening girls. Welcome to Ethics of Healing.'

Vala quietly takes a seat.

Arelis says 'Good evening Ashlynn Sedai.'

Ashlynn says 'Please try to keep quiet, no eating or drinking, absolutely NO daydreaming.'

Arelis nods at Ashlynn.

Ashlynn says 'Hold questions until each part is through, unless I ask for your participation'

Vala nods at Ashlynn.

Arelis nods at Ashlynn.

Ashlynn takes her staff and points to the board, specifically "Part 1".

Ashlynn says 'This class contains information on when to Heal, when not to Heal, and when to call in the aid of a Wisdom.'

Ashlynn says 'We will discuss what principles are involved in the Ethics of Healing.'

Maddy dips her pen then holds it over the paper ready ing to take notes.

Ashlynn says 'We will finish the class with a few scenarios for you to apply your newfound knowledge.'

Ashlynn says 'What do you think we mean when we say Ethics of Healing?'

Ashlynn looks about the room, hoping to see hands raised high.

Vala raises her hand.

Arelis raises her hand.

Lona observes the others interested to see their point of view.

Ashlynn says 'Vala, please share with the class.'

Vala says 'Some people would consider even healing to be an assault on their person.'

Arelis stares dreamily at Melosa.

Maddy half raises her hand then lowers it as the other Accepted beat her to it.

Lona pulls a butterscotch from her bag and leans to place it on Melosa's desk to keep her from fainting spells.

Ashlynn nods at Vala.

Arelis chuckles politely.

Ashlynn says 'Good answer. Arelis, what do you think?'

Melosa chews gratefully on the sweet.

Arelis says 'Vala is correct. I may also add that it is ethical to ask because we do not know how that individual may feel about the Tower and channeling.'

Ashlynn says 'Good answer.'

Vala nods at Arelis.

Lona raises her hand.

Arelis thanks Ashlynn heartily.

Ashlynn looks towards Maddy, and calls on her. She says 'Maddy, can you think of a specific example of what Arelis and Vala have said?'

Someone knocks on the door from the other side.

Ashlynn opens the door.

Divina has arrived from the west.

Ashlynn closes the door.

Ashlynn greets Divina with a light kiss on her cheek.

Arelis curtseys before Divina.

Vala curtseys before Divina.

Lona lowers into a curtsy with head bowed.

Divina smiles at Ashlynn.

Melosa curtseys before Divina.

Ashlynn says 'Thank you for attending, sister. I am honored to have a legend among the Brown sit in on my class.'

Divina says 'You are most welcome sister. I apologize for my tardiness.'

Divina finds her place in the back of the room.

Maddy says 'Yes Ashlynn Sedai. I have been in Fal Dara when Child of Light were fighting and they have not accepted heals or refreshing after I asked. So I gave them a vial, which they gratefully accepted.'

Maddy curtseys before Divina.

Ashlynn says 'That is an excellent real-world example. Good work, all of you.'

Arelis raises her eyebrows, surprised and happy to see Divina Sedai after a very long time.

Ashlynn points her staff towards "Part 2" written on the board.

Ashlynn says 'There are six values that apply to the Ethics of Healing.'

Arelis thanks Ashlynn heartily.

Ashlynn says 'Autonomy - the patient has the right to refuse or choose their treatment.'

Maddy smiles quickly at Arelis before jotting her notes down.

Lona lowers her hand and jots down Maddy's response.

Ashlynn says 'Beneficence - a Healer should act in the best interest of the patient.'

Ashlynn says 'Non-maleficence - first, do no harm.'

Ashlynn says 'Justice - concerning the distribution of scarce health resources, and the decision of who gets what treatment (fairness and equality).'

Ashlynn says 'Dignity - the patient (and the Healer) have the right to dignity.'

Ashlynn says 'Truthfulness and honesty - the concept of informed consent.'

Ashlynn says 'In the example Accepted Maddy described with the Child of Light, what values do you think applied?'

Ashlynn looks around the room for a show of hands.

Arelis raises her hand

Ashlynn says 'Arelis.'

Arelis says 'I would say Beneficence, Aes Sedai. As even though the Child in the example is an enemy of the Tower, she acted on the patient's well being.'

Lona raises her hand.

Ashlynn says 'Lona.'

Lona clears her throat a litte.

Lona says 'Beneficence, Non-maleficence, Dignity, Truthfulness and Honesty, all apply to the scenario between Healer and patient. '

Vala nods in agreement.

Ashlynn nods, her green eyes sparkling.

Maddy lifts her head from her notes and brushes her hair from her eyes, as she turns to Lona.

Lona says 'I do not know if Justice would apply in this situation Ashlynn Sedai.'

Maddy raises her hand.

Ashlynn says 'Everyone, I will need to take a short recess (five to ten minutes) and then I will be able
to resume.'

Arelis takes notes.

Arelis nods at Ashlynn.

Melosa raises her hand, her eyes brimming with curiousity.

Arelis looks at Melosa archly.

Divina says 'Yes Melosa, something to say in Ashlynn Sedai's absence?'

Lona pulls a mass of cotton from her pack and begins to tightly roll clean bandages.

Melosa says 'What if consent is not possible?'

Melosa says 'In the event that the patient is incapacitated.'

Divina nods in agreement.

Melosa says 'What does the Healer do then?'

Lona continues rolling but quirks her ear up a little to hear Divina Sedai's answer.

Arelis listens attentively.

Divina says 'I suspect you are going to hear more about Ethics in this class than you may wish to know in your lifetime.'

Divina says 'In which case, I am sure Ashlynn Sedai will broach the very situation and others similiar to it.'

Maddy licks her finger using it to quickly flips back through her notebook looking for additional resources.

Vala thinks hard.

Arelis nods at Divina.

Vala says 'If the patient is unable to consent, Healing may be too much for them.'

Divina says 'And if not, I have some old thick tomes on Ethics somewhere that I would be willing to lend you and keep you busy for the next couple of months.'

Arelis chuckles politely.

Maddy smiles at Melosa.

Arelis looks around the classroom as she waits for class to resume.

Melosa taps her lip thoughtfully.

Divina says 'Ladies you will find as your progress towards the ring and the shawl that there are trying times where your convictions may be tested to the brink.'

Melosa says 'The interesting thing is... saving lives is not one of the principles earlier identified.'

Melosa coughs loudly.

Divina says 'Not every situation you will ever face can be rationalised with a clear concise course of action.'

Arelis creates small threads of air and 'taps' Maddy's right shoulder where Melosa is sitting.

Maddy puts her pen down and stretches her back, arms and fingers as she looks around at the others in the class.

Lona chuckles and offers Melosa a sympathetic smile. "It is no easy feat to attend someone in their last hours."

Arelis blinks her eyes innocently.

Maddy grabs her shoulder and turns to look at Melosa with a question in her eyes.

Arelis giggles.

Divina says 'Always remember your oaths and work from there.'

Vala snickers softly.

Arelis nods at Divina.

Melosa winks at Lona, 'You should see the way I tend to Trollocs'

Arelis chuckles politely.

Vala says 'Yes, Divina Sedai.'

Divina says 'I do not openly question nor judge the Yellows principles on healing. They are solid, robust and logically sound.'

Divina says 'Under the most optimal conditions, they are easy and reasonable to follow every time.'

Arelis nods her head in agreement with what Divina Sedai just said.

Divina says 'But where Aes Sedai go, quite often we find ourselves not in the most optimal of conditions.'

Arelis mutters under her breath, she seems disgusted with Melosa.

Divina ruffles Melosa's hair playfully.

Melosa grumbles under her breath about certain people.

Divina says 'I hear you are very good at treating trollocs fairly and honourably, Melosa.'

Arelis wonders at Melosa's episodes.

Maddy grins at Divina.

Lona looks to Melosa somewhat concerned and pulls out another butterscotch, wrapping a mint leaf around it before placing it on her desk.

Melosa smiles happily.

Arelis beams a smile at Lona.

Melosa says 'Vermin, they are, Divina Sedai '

Melosa says 'And to be treated as such.'

Divina says 'Indeed.'

Melosa says 'That said, I still very much prefer finding water in the Waste with you'

Melosa grins at Divina.

Ashlynn says 'Apologies everyone, I am back.'

Maddy smiles at Ashlynn.

Vala smiles at Ashlynn.

Ashlynn says 'Thank you for fielding questions while I was unable, Divina Sedai. Much appreciated.'

Arelis whispers to Lona:"she probably has low sugar levels."

Arelis sits up straight.

Divina nods at Ashlynn.

Lona puts the rolled bandages in her pack before focusing on Ashlynn Sedai and nodding at Arelis's words.

Arelis says 'Welcome back Ashlynn Sedai. '

Maddy grabs her pen, dipping it before looking to the front of the class.

Ashlynn says 'Back to the matter at hand. I believe I had given an overview of the six values. Now, for a more in depth explanation of each, and another important concept to start. Triage.'

Arelis says 'Divina Sedai was kind enough to share her knowledge with us while you were gone.'

Arelis snickers softly.

Vala comforts Melosa.

Ashlynn says 'Triage is the ceoncept of deciding who needs aid the most. It is a vital part of decision making when it comes to Healing.'

Ashlynn says 'With experience, it is easy to diagnose and decide who needs medical attention the most.'

Ashlynn says 'However, you cannot just base your decision on who to Heal simply by letting yourself be guided by the severity of the injuries.'

Arelis raises her hand.

Lona begins writing with her willow bark quill.

Ashlynn says 'There are several ethical considerations involved with Healing. I will explore these six values in depth next.'

Ashlynn says 'Yes, Arelis?'

Arelis says 'going back to the previous point Aslynn Sedai...You mean that we need to assess the situation and see who we Heal first?'

Maddy quickly adds to the notes in her book before looking up again.

Arelis says 'the person with the most injuries or the person most crucial to the battle?'

Ashlynn says 'It depends on a number of factors.'

Maddy raises her hand

Arelis takes notes.

Ashlynn walks over to a desk and opens a pouch. She takes some different colored ribbons from it and lays them on the table. Black, red, yellow, and green.

Ashlynn says 'Does anyone have any idea what the significance of these ribbons is, and more specifically, their colors?'

Lona lays down her quill looking at the ribbons.

Melosa cranes her neck to look at the ribbons. Why is Lona so tall?!

Vala raises her hand.

Arelis looks at the ribbons laid down on the desk.

Ashlynn says 'Vala.'

Maddy examines the ribbons notating the colors in her book leaving a space for the explanation.

Vala says 'They seem to denote the severity of one's condition, Ashlynn Sedai. Someone deemed black may be beyond help.'

Ashlynn says 'Correct.'

Ashlynn says 'Going back to Arelis and her question, we use triage to determine the severity of injuries, likelihood to survive, and what the next necessary steps are for the casualty.'

Arelis takes notes.

Ashlynn says 'A black ribbon might denote someone who is already deceased or expectant. It is unfortunate, but a reality of battle. Typically, they will be left where they lay, and retrieved for proper burial later, when it is safe.'

Ashlynn says 'When I say expectant, that means someone who is barely clinging onto life, and will likely die.'

Arelis takes notes.

Ashlynn says 'As many of you may know, the Healing weaves we use not only use our own strength in the One Power, but some of the strength of the casualty as well. If someone is hurt so badly that Healing will kill them, they might be classified as expectant.'

Vala nods in agreement.

Melosa nods solemnly.

Ashlynn says 'Going down the list, a red casualty would be an acute life-threatening condition. These people have the highest priority for treatment. This is for things like major internal bleeding or amputations.'

Arelis continues to take notes.

Ashlynn says 'A yellow casualty is subject to a severe injury requiring urgent treatment, but is not so severe that it must be immediately addressed. They can be stabilized and transported while the red casualties are tended to. This would be for things like wounds of the flesh and fractures.'

Maddy dips her pen and continues to fill in the spaces below the ribbon colors in her notes.

Ashlynn says 'A green casualty denotes a minor injury or lack thereof. We want to examine these people as soon as possible and clear them. If they have any experience or are able-bodied enough, we would want to use them to help with triage efforts, stabilizations, transport, and so on.'

Ashlynn says 'Now, on to the first value, Autonomy.'

Ashlynn says 'This involves the right of a patient to make decision about their health and treatment. The patient may also refuse treatment.'

Ashlynn says 'Autonomy is the basis for informed consent. This is the idea that the patient must be fully informed about the potential risks and benefits of treatment.'

Ashlynn says 'Due to the relation between autonomy and informed consent, one can use the ability of a patient to make decisions about their health to gauge their health.'

Ashlynn says 'Many illnesses and injuries cause a loss of autonomy, or impair the patient's judgement.'

Vala nods in agreement.

Ashlynn says 'If this is the case, and the patient has left no directive on what they want should they not be able to make decisions, the Healer may make the decision.'

Ashlynn says 'For example, a king who has dragged himself through the gates after being poisoned and in awful condition? He still has autonomy.'

Ashlynn says 'While on the other hand, a soldier who has suffered severe wounds and become unconscious, no longer has autonomy.'

Ashlynn says 'Beneficence is the next value. It refers to the idea that a Healer should always have the best interests of the patient in mind, and should act accordingly.'

Ashlynn says 'If the patient no longer has autonomy, the Healer can fall back to Beneficence to direct their actions.'

Ashlynn says 'However, since there are no absolutes in what is in the best interest of the patient, this depends on the judgement of the Healer.'

Divina ponders life, the universe, and everything.

Arelis continues to take notes.

Ashlynn says 'In the prior example with the poisoned king, the Healer may elect to remove poison first, or use one of the Healing weaves to treat his awful wounds. Both are in the best interest of the patient.'

Divina continues to write notes down as she forgot about the test at the end of this class.

Vala strokes her chin thoughtfully.

Maddy blots her paper before scribbling more notes.

Ashlynn says 'The Healer may elect to use a light weave of Healing, quickly preventing him from dying, or a more intricate serious weaving that is more effective. Both are in best interest of the patient, but with different benefits.'

Ashlynn says 'Next is Non-maleficence. First, do no harm. The idea that maybe more importantly than Healing a patient, the Healer does nothing that may harm the patient, even if the intention is to do good.'

Ashlynn says 'Realistically, even tried and tested weaves may indirectly cause harm. Healing draws on the patient's strength, as I said before, and theoretically, Healing may deplete the patient's strength.'

Arelis listens intensely and continue taking notes.

Ashlynn says 'In a grave situation, where there are no alternatives, it may be justified to attempt a risky treatment.'

Maddy nods at Ashlynn Sedai then turns back to her notes to jot some more down.

Ashlynn says 'The concept of non-maleficence is continuously involved in a struggle with autonomy and beneficence. For example...'

Ashlynn says 'An autonomous patient may refuse treatment that would improve their condition, or prevent their condition from getting worse. Such as a Child of the Light, as mentioned in one of the previous answers.'

Arelis nods at Ashlynn.

Ashlynn says 'Going back to the example of the wounded and poisoned king, you might have experimented with a new Healing weave, but you are not sure of any associated risks with using the weave.'

Ashlynn says 'In that case, there is a potential of doing harm, and you should not use that weave. Instead, you ought to rely on a tried and tested weave.'

Melosa clears her throat.

Melosa raises her hand.

Maddy scatches her nose with the blunt end of her pen, then quickly adds additional notes to her book.

Ashlynn says 'Remember the incapacitated soldier? What if he had severe fractures? In that case, it is generally ill advised to move the casualty. But if he were under a wall that was about to topple over onto him, it might be best to move them despite the danger of hurting him further.'

Arelis nods at Ashlynn.

Ashlynn says 'Next we have Justice. That is the idea of fairly distributing limited resources of the Healer.'

Maddy looks from Ashlynn Sedai to Melosa waiting for the question.

Ashlynn says 'Accepted Melosa, I will call on you when I have finished this portion. '

Melosa says 'Ashlynn Sedai, when we speak of triage, does who the one being Healed matter?'

Arelis chuckles politely.

Ashlynn says 'It is amusing that you ask this question now, because I am actually about to get to that.'

Lona dips her quill and jots down a few thoughts of her own on justice.

Ashlynn says 'I will continue, and if the question is not sufficiently answered, I ask that you raise your hand again and we can address it.'

Melosa nods in agreement.

Arelis looks at Melosa to see if she is sneaking a peek at Ashlynn Sedai's notes.

Ashlynn says 'As I was saying, this idea of Justice and how to distribute our resources often pertains to how we choose to use our saidar points, or even the location we choose.'

Ashlynn says 'No matter if a person is a king or a pauper, a wealthy merchant or a farm girl, they have an equal right to being healed.'

Ashlynn says 'The pauper may turn out to be ta'veren, while the king may lead his army to death.'

Vala nods in agreement.

Arelis takes notes.

Ashlynn says 'The farm girl may end up a formidable Wisdom that will lead her village with supreme skill, while the merchant may end up impoverished on the streets by bad decisions.'

Ashlynn says 'No matter a person's standing, the Wheel weaves as the Wheel wills, and it is not up to us to only serve the rich and influential while neglecting the poor hard workers. Aes Sedai, Servant of All. '

Ashlynn says 'A thousand farmers providing food could be more important during a famine than one Lady in a palace.'

Maddy raises her hand

Ashlynn says 'We serve the world, not just ourselves, our friends, our allies, or rulers.'

Melosa nods her head in full agreement.

Ashlynn says 'Why, I wouldn't do a double take if I saw one of you find an incapacitated Child of Light on the battlefield and decide to heal his mortal wounds.'

Arelis whispers to Melosa: "I think Maddy was a farm girl, we should give her to the Wisdoms. Hehehehe"

Maddy nods at Ashlynn.

Arelis takes notes.

Ashlynn says 'Maddy, I see you there, please let me finish this section and we will discuss your question.'

Vala looks uneasy at the mention of treating a Child of Light.

Lona mutters under her breath "Based on the transcripts in the library, Jenda Sedai would heal the Child first and ask questions later."

Ashlynn says 'Everyone plays their part, everyone is important.'

Maddy stares icily at Arelis, putting her finger to her lips indicatiing she should shush.

Ashlynn says 'While everyone has a right to be Healed, we must be careful not to meddle in conflicts.'

Arelis stares at the ceiling tying not to make eye contact with Maddy.

Ashlynn says 'For example, if a Healer were to provide assistance to an Illianer Companion to treat injuries given to him by a Defender of the Stone, it might give the appearance of taking sides.'

Ashlynn says 'If the king from before drags himself through the gate, and that wounded soldier is about to be crushed by a falling wall, both have a right to your aid. The king is not inherently better or more important than the soldier.'

Divina smiles happily.

Maddy jots notes in her notebook quickly then looks back up to the front of the room.

Ashlynn says 'One could justify Healing either first. The soldier, because he is more badly wounded and in immediate danger, the king because he may be a legendary leader in battle whose presence on the battlefield could turn the tide.'

Ashlynn says 'The king might feel spurned if he were not Healed first, which could influence relations between his nation and the White Tower.'

Arelis nods in agreement with what was just said by Ashlynn Sedai.

Ashlynn says 'In the end, life is more important than someone's ego, and one should Heal the most badly injured first.'

Ashlynn says 'In such cases, it may be wise to clarify the reasoning behind the choice to Heal the soldier first, with the aim to prevent any bad blood arising between the king and the White Tower.'

Ashlynn says 'Melosa, does this answer your question?'

Melosa shows conflicting emotions about what was just said.

Ashlynn says 'Please, share with the class'

Ashlynn smiles at Melosa.

Melosa says 'It does, Ashlynn Sedai.'

Melosa says 'I agree yet find myself disagreeing at the same time'

Ashlynn says 'Explain.'

Melosa says 'While I agree that we are Servants of All, not all men are equal'

Melosa says 'Some have a more profound impact on others.'

Melosa says 'Yet at the same time, who are we to judge or guess at the intent of the Creator?'

Maddy nods at Melosa.

Melosa shrugs her slim shoulders.

Melosa says 'So I am two minds about this.'

Arelis says 'May I interject Ashlynn Sedai?'

Ashlynn says 'Yes, Arelis.'

Melosa says 'For me, perhaps less Justice but more about Needs or Beneficiance'

Ashlynn says 'Once Melosa is finished speaking.'

Melosa nods in agreement.

Lona raises her hand.

Arelis says 'Melosa, just to understand, you are saying that a King may be more influential and have more "value" than a farmer?'

Melosa says 'I am.'

Arelis says 'But at the root'

Arelis says 'that goes against what a Healer stands for as ALL LIFE MATTER (ALM).'

Melosa winces at Arelis' yell of excitement.

Ashlynn says 'Please, no need to yell.'

Arelis says 'I did not mean to yell Ashlynn Sedai'

Arelis says 'just wanted to put a bit of emphasis '

Ashlynn says 'Lona, what did you have to add?'

Lona says 'May I offer a different perspective for Melosa?'

Ashlynn says 'Of course.'

Ashlynn says 'We are here to learn and discuss.'

Melosa says 'All lives matter. Some more than others?'

Ashlynn says 'Melosa, hush. Let Lona speak.'

Melosa says 'Just like animals on a farm.'

Ashlynn glares icily at Melosa.

Arelis chuckles politely.

Melosa falls silent.

Lona says 'I do not think you have considered what the farmer is capable of doing instead of the King.'

Lona says 'A farmer is skilled in raising animals, and may have access to stock that can be processed to feed both himself and the king in recovery after healing, men tend to eat far more after Healing. So the simple farmer may add more to the Healing process than the king.'

Arelis applauds Lona.

Maddy beams a smile at Lona.

Arelis nods approvingly.

Lona says 'The farmer, though it is hard to think of, may have more value to a channeler in need of a place to stay in the future. They say things from Aes Sedai come at a price, and I can see why.'

Lona lowers her head in deference to Ashlynn Sedai.

Arelis whispers to Lona: "Melosa must be Nobility."

Vala raises her hand.

Ashlynn says 'Yes, Vala?'

Vala says 'Both of those men, the king and the farmer, they could be a husband or a father.'

Maddy raises her hand.

Vala says 'They are massively important to their families, whatever we think of them.'

Arelis nods at Vala.

Ashlynn says 'Maddy, you have something to add?'

Arelis looks around...looks at Maddy...looks around...looks at Maddy...

Ashlynn patiently twiddles her thumbs.

Arelis stares blankly into the sky.

Arelis nudges Maddy suggestively with her elbow.

Maddy says 'Yes Ashlynn Sedai, when Triaging would it be wrong to assess the course of the battle and whom of the yellow or red could be more effective in turning the tide, and or to Heal fellow
Tower channelers first as they could not only help heal but be very effective in battle.'

Arelis sighs in relief.

Vala nods at Maddy.

Ashlynn says 'I think it depends on the extent and type of casualties during battle.'

Maddy nods at Ashlynn.

Divina says 'Do you mind if I add my thoughts, sister?'

Ashlynn says 'Please, go ahead.'

Divina says 'Now bear in mind girls, I am no master Healer by any stretch.'

Maddy taps her pen on the inkpot and turns to Divina Sedai, listening intently.

Divina says 'What I do have though is many years of experience in different situations.'

Arelis takes notes,

Divina says 'I think there is no absolute right or wrong answer here.'

Divina says 'Melosa has one opinion from her perspective of the greater situation in the battle.'

Maddy chews on the end of her pen, while she concentrates on Divina Sedai's words.

Divina says 'Lona has taken another more streamlined view of the immediate health situation of the farmer vs the king.'

Divina says 'Each has its merits but ultimately none of you know what the the outcome of healing either might be.'

Arelis nods at Divina.

Melosa nods in agreement.

Arelis continues to take notes.

Maddy jots the points Divina Sedai makes swiftly in her book.

Melosa looks at Arelis.

Divina says 'I believe if you judge the situation using best methods and make a logical assessment then take your action.'

Maddy nods at Divina.

Lona smiles in thanks to Divina Sedai and thinks about requesting a lesson later.

Divina says 'Ultimately, you are responsible for your actions but if you are actions are in line with the Three oaths at the beginning and then as best as you can within the guidelines of the healing principles then no one is going to fault you based on the outcome.'

Ashlynn says 'There might not be a real right or wrong answer. The best I might be able to say is that the Wheel weaves as the Wheel wills.'

Vala nods in agreement.

Divina says 'I would rather take an action and be wrong, than take no action and still be wrong.'

Divina nods at Ashlynn.

Maddy leans over and taps Vala's desk lightly to get her attention, pointing to the Aes Sedai.

Arelis nods at Divina.

Vala grins at Maddy.

Divina says 'But in saying that. I carefully consider the consequences of my actions before I take them.'

Ashlynn nods, her green eyes sparkling.

Maddy nods slowly as she writes the words of wisdom in her book.

Divina says 'And that ladies is what you should take away with you.'

Divina says 'Your actions and consequences are your's alone.'

Ashlynn says 'Thank you for sharing, Divina Sedai.'

Ashlynn says 'The next value is Dignity.'

Ashlynn says 'The patient and the Healer have a right to dignity. With regards to the patient, this means that we cannot impose our will upon them, especially if they have autonomy. We must, and I cannot emphasize this enough...'

Ashlynn says 'We must ask for permission prior to channeling upon anyone.'

Maddy nods at Ashlynn.

Vala nods at Ashlynn.

Arelis nods at Ashlynn.

Ashlynn says 'If a patient is so suspicious of the One Power that they refuse being Healed, well, that is that.'

Ashlynn says 'Even if it means that they will die.'

Ashlynn says 'Healing someone without their permission violates the sanctity of the body as much as rape. Should one encounter such a case, you can suggest using herbs, or calling a Wisdom.'

Maddy shakes her head and frowns as she adds to her notes.

Ashlynn says 'The Healer also has a right to dignity. We may refuse to Heal someone, provided we have good reason to.'

Ashlynn says 'Petty reasons such as not liking someone are not sufficient.'

Ashlynn says 'Now if you were fighting and came across Boboliosie dying in a ditch, it is understandable that you might not Heal him, considering his track record.'

Vala chuckles politely.

Melosa tuts disapprovingly.

Ashlynn says 'The chance that he will turn around and immediately try to stab you in the back might be too great.'

Ashlynn says 'If someone is merely scratched and demands Healing, we may decline if we feel a more critical patient requires our aid.'

Arelis remembers Boboliosie and mutters in disgust.

Ashlynn says 'If someone is rude, aggressive, or a potential danger, we may decline Healing. Those warranted by the White Tower and Tar Valon may also be refused.'

Maddy jots in her notes "if you heal Bobolisie be sure to flee heal him."

Melosa winks at Maddy.

Ashlynn says 'If the king turns out to be King Ailron, the King of Amadicia, and he refuses Healing, you should leave it at that.'

Maddy beams a smile at Melosa.

Arelis nods at Ashlynn.

Ashlynn says 'Even if his presence on the battlefield might turn the tide, his autonomy, dignity, his freewill are to be respected.'

Maddy writes in bold RESPECT.

Ashlynn says 'The mortally wounded soldier from our previous example also has a right to dignity, but since he has no autonomy you have only three options. Rely on your past experiences regarding the man's wishes and Heal him, or refrain from Healing based on those, make your best decision since he has no autonomy.'

Ashlynn says 'Or respect his dignity and not violate the sanctity of the body and not act, even if this means he may die.'

Ashlynn says 'Obviously, this depends on your knowledge of the person, and you may or may not have sufficient means to make that determination.'

Maddy nods quickly as she blots her pen and paper.

Ashlynn says 'The next value I am going to talk about is Truthfulness and honesty.'

Ashlynn says 'This idea is related to informed consent, meaning that the Healer must inform the patient fully about all the potential benefits of the Healing, as well as the possible risks of the treatment.'

Ashlynn says 'The Healer must be truthful and honest, and not lie to their patient.'

Ashlynn says 'Keeping information from the patient will influence their judgement, and negatively impact their feeling of dignity once they find out.'

Ashlynn says 'King Ailron is in awful condition, and he refuses Healing based on his convictions.'

Ashlynn says 'You can still attempt to persuade him by listing the benefits of the Healing weave, but you must include the possible negatives.'

Ashlynn says 'In a similar vein, the mortally wounded soldier also has a right to truthfulness and honesty, however, he is unconscious and has no autonomy.'

Arelis takes notes.

Ashlynn says 'If you decide to Heal him, it may be best to only provide limited Healing until he regains consciousness. Then, you can inform him about the risks and benefits of the treatment.'

Ashlynn says 'Are there any more questions?'

Ashlynn says 'If not, I will move on to part three.'

Ashlynn says 'Part three involves some scenarios.'

Ashlynn says 'The first scenario is as such.'

Ashlynn says 'A Lancer you met in Fal Dara asked for Armor. Later, during battle in the Blight, you hear the man's cries for help. '

Ashlynn says 'When you arrive to his location, he loses consciousness. Do you Heal him, even if he has not given consent?'

Vala raises her hand.

Ashlynn says 'Vala.'

Vala says 'I would, as he has already asked for armor to be weaved upon him so I assume he wouldn't mind.'

Ashlynn nods at Vala.

Ashlynn says 'The second scenario...'

Ashlynn says 'You come across a battle between a Defender and a Winged Guard. The Winged Guard is badly wounded and asks for Healing. The White TOwer has had trouble with the Mayeners lately, and Healing him may put the White Tower in a better light. Do you Heal him, or not?'

Arelis raises her hand.

Vala strokes her chin thoughtfully.

Lona smiles wondering if Arelis is thinking along the same lines.

Ashlynn says 'Arelis.'

Arelis says 'Taking into account that we are currently banned from Tear, I would Heal the Winged Guard in order to save his life and hopefully improve relations with Mayene.'

Ashlynn says 'I see.'

Ashlynn says 'Does anyone else want to volunteer an answer to the scenario?'

Lona looks about and raises her hand.

Ashlynn says 'Lona.'

Divina makes an odd sound in her throat.

Lona thinks a moment then responds.

Lona says 'I would Heal the Winged Guard, but I would not Heal them using saidar unless the wounds were life threatening, per your scenario I do not know where we would be, or if I could come under assault for doing so by more Defenders. Or the opposite should I Heal the Defender.'

Ashlynn says 'Interesting. Recent events sure have given you girls a take that I did not necessarily expect.'

Arelis takes notes intensely.

Ashlynn says 'Let me go back to the concept of Justice.'

Ashlynn says 'Remember the example of a Companion and a Defender? We might not want to take action due to the fact that it may strain relations with Tear.'

Ashlynn says 'While on one hand, it could help to unfreeze the relations with Mayene, it may open a new can of worms with the Tairens.'

Arelis raises hands to add to what was said and get clarity.

Ashlynn says 'While the scenario did say battle between the two, do we know that the wounds are from the battle? There is more to the story we need to verify before we take action, unless it is a life-
threatening casualty requiring immediate assistance.'

Ashlynn says 'I also would like to correct you in that to my knowledge, we are currently banned from Mayene, not Tear. Tear has many laws against channeling within the city gates, however.'

Arelis stands corrected and takes notes.

Ashlynn says 'Arelis, please give your response quickly so we can move on.'

Arelis says 'my apologies Aes Sedai for not being better informed.'

Arelis says 'Our relations with Tear has never been the best as they house Hand of Lights in their
city and are no channel. Isnt it better to choose to save Mayene.'

Arelis took too long and apologizes.

Ashlynn says 'It may be better, but for all we know, the relations with Mayene could be being worked on and near to a close, soon to become warmer. While the Tairens may not particularly adore us, aiding their sworn enemy will no doubt anger them and cause relations to worsen. There is no guarantee that Healing the Winged Guard will fix relations, either.'

Arelis nods at Ashlynn Sedai and takes notes.

Ashlynn says 'Okay, moving on.'

Ashlynn says 'Here is another scenario: Fal Dara is besieged by a large force of trollocs. It could fall. There are many wounded, some severely, some slightly. It will be impossible to Heal them all. Do you Heal the badly injured so they can help, weakened as they will be, or will you Heal the strong, so they may defend the city and the injured in it?'

Lona waits to see if others will respond first before contemplating raising her hand.

Ashlynn says 'Lona, go ahead.'

Lona nods.

Lona says 'May I speak freely for this Ashlynn Sedai?'

Ashlynn says 'As we say in Altara, Lona... Lean back on your knife and let your tongue go free. You may speak freely.'

Vala grins at Ashlynn.

Arelis grins evilly.

Lona says 'I would first heal a few that could fight, those with the least amount of healing needed, or refresh those willing to make a last stand, I would then heal a few of the more severely injured capable of still moving to gather what ever wagons or transport was possible.'

Ashlynn nods in agreement.

Arelis takes notes from Lona on the subject.

Lona says 'I would send those that I could south out the dog gate towards Tar Valon and the Farming villages for aid while i stayed with those making the last stand in hopes of also bringing them out to. I don't see it often mentioned that the healer may choose to stay to give life to those who would have perished.'

Ashlynn nods, her green eyes sparkling.

Vala nods at Lona.

Lona says 'I do not see the scenario ending Rosie either way. '

Arelis nods at Lona.

Ashlynn says 'It is a tough call. There will be many tough calls if you provide Healing and support.'

Lona says 'I did not think of things this way until a wise Yellow enlightened me, thank you Ashlynn Sedai.'

Arelis smiles at Lona and nods approvingly to what was said.

Ashlynn says 'Here is another scenario. You are traveling through Tear, when you reach the bridge over the River Erinin. A young woman is hysterical and threatening to jump off the bridge. You approach her, and she jumps. With some effort, you manage to use some weaves of air to pull her from the water. She has almost drowned with much water in her lungs. She is unconscious. Do you Heal her without consent? Or not?'

Arelis raises her hand.

Ashlynn says 'Arelis.'

Arelis says 'This to me is a tricky situation but ultimately I would save the girl. Tricky because it is prohibited to channel in Tairen lands.'

Ashlynn says 'I believe the current laws are only that it is prohibited within the city.'

Lona solemnly raises her hand.

Arelis says 'In that case then I would definitely save the girl's life'

Vala nods in agreement.

Arelis says 'even if she has not given consent.'

Ashlynn says 'Lona, and make it quick. I want to wrap this up. We are starting to go over on time.'

Lona says 'Yes, Ashlynn Sedai.'

Lona says 'I would not put the girl through the rigors of healing with water still in her lungs. It must be purged first or I would risk harm to her by healing her and causing her to begin drown again while conscious. I would also need to see if the lungs are damages beyond repair with delving.'

Ashlynn nods, her green eyes sparkling.

Ashlynn says 'That is a good insight.'

Ashlynn says 'One last scenario. This is related to the young girl, if you opted to save her.'

Arelis nods at Lona.

Ashlynn says 'After she regains consciousness, she begins crying. You try to ask her what is wrong, and she tells you a story about how her life is over now because she was raped by a Tairen lord.'

Ashlynn says 'You ride into Tear, and hear word that the same Tairen lord is seriously ill. Do you Heal the lord, given the situation and the laws of Tear? Or not?'

Arelis realizes the intensity and seriousness of the example at hand.

Arelis raises her hand.

Ashlynn says 'Arelis.'

Arelis says 'This is a very difficult situation Aes Sedai and would love to hear your input, but I would go with saving the Lord and having some shame inside. '

Arelis says 'The Healer should Heal. but in the end we are all human and have feelings.'

Melosa taps her lip thoughtfully.

Lona raises her hand.

Ashlynn says 'Lona.'

Lona says 'I would not heal the lord, Tear's laws are their laws, however I would still send for the local reader to aid him and pay the price if needed. I would also report his crimes to the local magistrate and offer the girl passage to Tar Valon, many women have come back from worse in this city.'

Ashlynn nods, her green eyes sparkling.

Vala nods at Lona.

Ashlynn says 'Melosa, you have been silent. What would you do in this situation?'

Melosa says 'Ah'

Melosa says 'I would not Heal the Lord'

Melosa says 'As much as we believe so, not all problems can be solved by the One Power'

Melosa chuckles politely.

Melosa says 'What is to say that this Tairen Lord could not be cured by herbs and other treatments?'

Melosa says 'Tairen law is crystal clear on this and we would risk much by violating it.'

Ashlynn nods, her green eyes sparkling.

Ashlynn says 'I have been relatively silent on how I would handle many of these scenarios. In this case, I will give you a treat. I will share my thought process on it with you all.'

Arelis nods at Ashlynn.

Ashlynn says 'First of all, I think this involves the idea of Justice. Not only in what the woman accused the lord of doing, but in respecting the laws and sovereignty of Tear.'

Ashlynn says 'I would start by inquiring with the local guard if an exception might be made, depending upon his condition. If it were severe enough to require immediate assistance, I would try to use my rhetorical skills to convince them to allow it.'

Ashlynn says 'If they refused, I would consider reaching out to a local reader, as another of you suggested.'

Ashlynn says 'If the illness were not so serious, I would arrange for transportation outside of the city, and Heal the man there, where it would be legal.'

Ashlynn says 'In all cases, I would report the accusations made by the woman, to the local guard.'

Ashlynn says 'There are always alternatives.'

Ashlynn says 'Whether he did what he is accused of or not is none of my concern. I may feel bad for the woman, if it were true, but the law is the law, and we are not the law. That is up to the Tairen authorities to handle as they see fit.'

Ashlynn says 'Unless anyone has any questions, that is the end of the class.'

Vala shakes her head.

Ashlynn says 'I hope everyone learned something new, and I hope you all take this freshly minted knowledge and use it in a practical manner in the real world.'

Lona closes her notebook and stoppers her inkwell.

Melosa shakes her head.

Ashlynn says 'That concludes the lesson.'

The Accepted says 'Before you are dismissed, I will take roll for Ashlynn Sedai.'

Arelis takes notes on the situation put forth.

The Accepted says 'To receive credit for the course, SAY MAY I BE DISMISSED Ashlynn SEDAI?'

The Accepted says 'If I nod at you, that means you are dismissed and may leave.'

Arelis thanks Ashlynn heartily.

Vala thanks Ashlynn heartily.

Lona says 'May I be dismissed Ashlynn Sedai?'

Arelis says 'I have learned a lot today Aes Sedai. Thank you very much for your time and knowledge.'

Melosa says 'Thank you Ashlynn Sedai for the fascinating session'

A haughty Accepted nods at Lona.

Arelis thanks Ashlynn heartily.

Vala says 'may I be dismissed Ashlynn Sedai'

A haughty Accepted nods at Vala.
