Melosa looks over the desks in neat rows, ensuring each chair and inkpot are positioned just right. Moving to the front of the room, she straightens the scrolls and textbooks on the teacher's desk,
readying them for the lesson ahead.
Vala says 'Right, that's an angreal.'
Vala says 'Left in a barrel with spare lanterns and such.'
Maddy moves to a desk at the back, sitting gracefully, then turns her attention back to Melosa.
Melosa looks at the growing crowd of students and smiles warmly.
Melosa says 'Thank you for being on time. Let us give the rest of the class a few more moments to enter before we begin.'

Melosa takes a moment to assess each eager face, noting their varying levels of enthusiasm and
curiosity. With a nod of approval, she begins to address the class.
Melosa says brightly, 'Tia iqet mestani calichniye.'
Melosa looks at all the blank faces and smiles, 'A literal translation of this greeting would be “To
this lesson welcome."'
Maddy reads the paper and glances back to Melosa saying, 'Wonderful I will keep this safe for future
reference.'
Vianca folds her paper and marks her book, studying the room briefly.
Melosa says 'For those whom we have yet to meet, I am Accepted Melosa and an Apprentice to the Green Ajah. I teach the fundamentals of the Old Tongue and also self defense/evasion classes for novices.'
Melosa drops into a full curtsy, bowing deep and spreading her skirts wide.
Melosa says 'Before we begin, there are a few matters to take care of.'
Melosa says 'Maddy, would you be so kind as to watch the door out of the corner of your eye in case
someone unsavory or worse, evil, decides to interrupt us?'
Vianca whispers something to a young Tower Guard.

Maddy grabs her notebook and pen from her pack setting them neatly on the desk in front of her.
Melosa smiles at him.

Melosa says 'Third, we will go through some words in Old Tongue that are still commonly used together.'
Yve busies herself finding inkpots and making sure everyone has a quill pen.
Melosa says 'Lastly, we will be having a short quiz where there will be some prizes for the fastest
answer!'
Melosa says 'Throughout the class, I will be pausing for questions time to time. Do hold your questions
for such pauses.'
Melosa smiles at the assembled class.
Vala nods at Melosa.
Melosa motions to Yve who hurries over and wipes the black slate board clean with a piece of dusty
cloth.
Maddy writes the 4 subject headlines in her notebook, then dips and blots her pen ready to take more notes.
Melosa writes 'An introduction to the Old Tongue' in huge letters across the board.
Melosa says 'First, for a little bit of history...'
Melosa begins in a clear voice, 'The Old Tongue was the language commonly used in the Age Legends over four thousand years ago.'
Melosa says 'During that time, the Old Tongue was spoken, written and read by all.'
Melosa says 'Surprisingly, despite the earth shattering turmoil caused by the Breaking, historians have
discovered that the use of the Old Tongue did not fall off during this time. In fact, records show
that the Old Tongue was used widely as late as 1000 AB by the peoples of the Ten Nations - although
the New Tongue, a crude form of the Old Tongue, had begun to develop.'
Melosa slowly walks up the aisle to the middle of the room, looking each attendee in the eye before
continuing.
Melosa says 'It was only after the end of Trolloc Wars in 1350 AB, that the New Tongue as we know it
today, begun to replace the Old Tongue and around the time of Artur Hawkwing at FY 950, almost a
thousand years later, had replaced the Old Tongue completely.'
Melosa continues in a clear voice, 'Today, the knowledge of the Old Tongue is largely lost. Some nobles
like the Mayeners or Saldaeans are expected to learn the Old Tongue. Scholars and historians also
continue to learn it, especially those working to understand the Karaethon Cycle, the Prophecies of
the Dragon.'
Melosa frowns before continuing, 'It is said the Seanchan know and use the Old Tongue more frequently
than we do. After all, the term damane is the word in Old Tongue for leashed.'
Melosa looks at the rapt audience and smiles encouragingly, 'Today, the Old Tongue can still be seen
through the name of places, things and concepts (ooc: nouns) or used to describe actions or
occurrences (ooc: verbs). In our next chapter, we shall go through some examples.'
Melosa says 'Before we proceed to the next chapter, is there any questions from the class?'
Maddy nods slowly as she furiously scribbles the notes.
Yve raises a hand.
Melosa says 'Yes, Yve.'
Yve says 'Does anyone need any more ink?'
Yve giggles.
Maddy grins at Yve.

Melosa composes a weave of Air which sweeps the written fine chalk into a small pile of
dust at the corner of the room.
Melosa writes using a fat chalk pencil, 'Chapter Two: Understanding the Structure of the Old Tongue
along with commonly used Old Tongue terms and their meanings'
Melosa turns back to the class.
Melosa says 'And now, we enter the heart of today's class.'
Melosa says 'Before we can even begin to start on the Old Tongue, let us first examine the New Tongue,
the language we use today, to get a better understanding of language basics.'
Maddy chews on the end of her pen as she listens carefully.
Vianca whispers something to Leis.
Melosa says 'Take for instance, a sentence "You brush your hair".'
Melosa says 'This sentence can be broken up into You (the subject), brush (the action ooc: verb) and
your hair (object).'
Melosa says 'Likewise, the sentence "They grow plants" is broken up into They (subject), grow, the
action) and plants (object) (ooc: a SVO sentence structure)'
Melosa says 'Now with that basic understanding, we can begin to deconstruct the Old Tongue.'
Melosa pauses for emphasis before continuing, 'The Old Tongue follows in most cases the opposite order
(ooc: a OVS sentence structure) or object-action-subject order.'
Melosa says 'For example, in the beginning of this class I greeted everyone with Tia iqet mestani
calichniye. A direct literal translation of this would be To this lesson welcome.'
Melosa says 'Tia being To'
Melosa says 'Iqet being this'
Melosa says 'Mestani being lesson'
Melosa says 'and Calichniye being welcome'
Melosa says 'Yve and myself earlier passed out handouts which you now have in your hands.'

Sedai hei (lit. Here welcome is for Aes Sedai always) or Here is always welcome for Aes Sedai.'

Melosa moves among the desks, closely examining each and every student as she continues her lesson,
noting those with confused looks.
Melosa says 'I understand that this information can be very overwhelming. Allow me to simplify a little
with some personal experience.'
Melosa says 'A simple rule of thumb I've developed is not literally read the words in its translated
order but to re-interpret its full meaning. Let me explain.'
Melosa continues, 'I love the following saying in the Old Tongue for its complexity.'
Melosa pauses.
Melosa says 'Sene sovya cabadonde ain dovienya.'
Melosa says 'The literal translation is "As another horse (to) ride is luck"'
Melosa says 'Would anyone want to perhaps rephrase that into something we understand more easily in the
New Tongue?'
Vala raises her hand.
Melosa says 'Vala, please'
Maddy frowns trying to figure out the New Tongue translation.
Vala says 'Luck is just another horse to ride. Or, to pick any horse over another?'
Melosa nods at her.
Melosa says 'Precisely.'
Melosa says 'or luck is a horse to ride like any other"'
Melosa says 'See! You now know the Old Tongue'
Melosa grins at her.

Melosa says 'Let us go through a last example together. The Old Tongue phrase 'Al'cair'rahienallen'. If
I were to tell you, al'cair means Of the Golden, rahien means Dawn and allen means Hill, what does
this phrase mean?'
Yve raises an inkpot slightly, and looks around the room, trying to make eye contact with each
occupant.
Maddy eyes widen with understanding as she jots the notes in he book.
Melosa says 'Would anyone want to venture an educated guess?'
Melosa adjusts her dark green headscarf ever so slightly as she waits for an answer.
Vala raises her hand.
Maddy nods at Vala.

Melosa says 'The Old Tongue is incredibly diverse and rich - we would not be able to cover the entire
language in just an hour. Nonetheless, we will attempt to cover a few examples and deconstruct their
meanings.'
Melosa says 'Let us start with places. Earlier, I gave the example of Al'cair'rahienallen of the Hill of
the Golden Dawn. This is the original name of Cairhien, the neighbour city to the far southeast. Can
anyone name a example of a place that has its roots from the Old Tongue?'
Melosa peers around the room.

Vala says 'This very place?'
Yve says 'I think many names might.'
Melosa nods in agreement.
