Another subject of research, this time from 2011:
Research on tracks and speed of fading.
Premise:
Track, it is a vital skill both in finding foes, as well as helping avoid them. However, we seem to take tracks for granted, knowing which tracks are older but never knowing specifics. I set out to find detailed knowledge so we can tell more accurately when someone or something passed that way.
Method:
First I found a relatively safe room that was trackable. The Cityguard Stables in Cairhien served this purpose, since it is safely within a city and a no-hide. I made sure to be hungry or thirsty during testing so ticks passing could be measured accurately. From that point on, it was a matter of leaving tracks, tracking to see tracks prior to a tick, then every subsequent tick.
Having had some experience tracking before, I knew that tracks are made up of a Modifier and an Age. E.g.: Some obvious (Modifier) fresh (Age) tracks of Kathala leaving <<WEST<<.
Age:
Initially I focussed on the Age. I tracked myself, a cat, an Illuminator, a beggar, two types of unridden horses, and a mounted warhorse. It seemed every creature's tracks aged from fresh to recent, fairly recent, almost day-olds and day-olds after the same amount of time (1). So whether a track is left by a cat, myself or a ridden mount, if they are fresh they were made in the current tick or the one before. Likewise, if the tracks were almost day-olds, they were 12-23 ticks old.

When examining the raw data (1), I found something odd. Cats started out the same as all the others, but they faded to clear fresh tracks after 1 tick. This could either be due to differences in class (human, humanoid, animal, horse), or differences in weight. While something can be said for either option, it seemed more logical that weight would affect tracks. The heavier the creature, the deeper the tracks. For example, a cat can sometimes tiptoe over snow, whereas a human or horse cannot.
I set out to find a small horse to test my theory. I acquired a young colt, and took it to Cairhien. I rode it and lead it dismounted, then observed how the tracks faded. To my surprise, the mounted tracks faded just like a warhorse, while the dismounted tracks faded exactly like Kathala's. The only difference here was the weight and ridden status. Since a dismounted warhorse's tracks faded in the same manner as a mounted warhorse's tracks, it was not the ridden status that caused the difference, but the added weight. (1)

As you can see, the tracks of the heavier unridden horses and mounts remain obvious, while the lighter creatures and unridden colt fade to clear. Along with a cat's tracks fading from obvious to clear after 1 tick, it lead me to conclude that weight influences the speed at which tracks fade from obvious to clear, and beyond.
Modifier:
Within an Age, tracks slowly fade, following a set pattern. However, not every age uses every Modifier. There are no extremely faint fresh tracks, for example.

You could find no tracks at all.
I have not found any standard time in which the Modifiers fade over time. For example, while during the first testing it took the warhorse tracks 124 ticks to disappear, the second testing it took 110 ticks. During the second testing, the tracks went from "very faint week-old" straight to no tracks at all, whereas the previous time it first went to "extremely faint week-olds" prior to disappearing completely. This possibly has something to do with the amount of traffic that passes through the room.
Related notes:
Snow does not make tracks age or fade any faster. It does lengthen the timer of the track skill, and gives a message about there being snow.
Tracks in swamps rooms age and fade dramatically faster than tracks in other room types. I have seen instances of tracks disappearing in one tick, or two. In the first case, they went from obvious fresh to no tracks at all in one tick. In the latter case, they faded to extremely faint week-olds prior to vanishing.
Conclusion:
Track age is a very reliable tool to judge how long ago a specific set of tracks were made. This should allow for more accurate information to evaluate situations while travelling the lands, and perhaps a better judgement when it comes to doing battle or keeping safe.
